Join - Promising Futures - the Calgary Police
                 Foundation’s Monthly Giving Program!

By becoming a Promising Futures donor, you are joining other thoughtful Calgarians who want to build a
city where families can thrive, and all children can reach their full potential.

With your monthly gift, we are able to continue to fund six unique and customized programs that offer
children and youth most in need with education, prevention, early intervention and risk reduction
resources in conjunction with the Calgary Police Service.

The Promising Futures program is completely customizable and any monthly contribution, no matter the
size, has the ability to provide our city’s youth with the opportunity to succeed. This helps us create a safer,
healthier community for everyone.

Hear from a few of our monthly donors about why they choose Promising Futures for their monthly giving:

“I choose to be a Promising Futures monthly donor to support youth in the funded
programs at Calgary Police Foundation because it is a convenient way for me to give. For
what financially equals coffee at Starbucks I can support youth in Calgary who are
vulnerable to victimization and crime. And how great is that!”
                                                       – Barbara Pohl, Senior Director, Community Engagement,
                                                                       Calgary Police Foundation

“I provide a recurring donation through Promising Futures - the Calgary Police Foundation’s
monthly giving program to support a cause I am passionate about, providing vulnerable and at-
risk youth with support programs to help them navigate their world and stay safe from crime and
victimisation. A small monthly gift leads to a larger gift over time and I’m in this for the long term
as children are our future and we need to give them every chance to be the best they can be.”
                    – Susan Cron, Executive Director of the Calgary Police Foundation

finally come to an end, and thanks to all of our wonderful
supporters – supporters like YOU - we have officially SOLD OUT!

This year, our calendars traveled far and wide, with purchases
across Canada and to 10 other countries around the world.
Through our supporters, thousands of homes now proudly
display their 2020 Canine Calendar; showcasing the Calgary
Police Service Canine Unit and our Calgary Police Foundation
                                             funded programs.

The funds raised and the awareness this campaign brings is
critical and ensures that our Programs can continue to provide

continuous growth so that we can reach even more in the
future. And we could not do it without you!

January Reader Poll Results!
Last month, we asked our readers which program they
would like to learn more about. Based on your replies, the
Integrated School Support Program (ISSP) was your #1
choice!

ISSP is one of the many comprehensive programs funded
by the Calgary Police Foundation. Implementing wrap-
around services for two historically underperforming
elementary schools in NE Calgary, this program aims to
improve the academic performance and social, emotional,
and physical well-being of participants.

ISSP operates on a five-pillar system of nutrition, fitness,
learning, mental health and socio-economic well-being, and
a strong and safe community. Based on these five pillars,
children in the ISSP program have access to a breakfast
club and hot lunch program, daily physical education, an
in-school psychologist, after school programs, and
mentorship provided by members of the Calgary Police
Service to help them achieve success.

Within a school environment, there are many ways we can
measure success and while ISSP does not collect academic
information until June 2020, anecdotally the principal at Patrick
Airlie has indicated that over time the report card indicators for
students reading “at or above grade level” dramatically improve.

For example, this year in grade 5 they have 95% of students who
fall into that category; when those same students were in grade
3 only half of them met that objective. The rate of improvement,
which can in part be attributed to ISSP, is what is more significant
than you might see in a less complex elementary school.

This is just one example of how the services provided by the Integrated School Support Program help create
an environment in which our students can thrive. To learn more about the ISSP program and how you can
help, visit our website at www.CalgaryPoliceFoundation.ca.

Youth
                                             Views

Led by the Calgary Police Foundation, a newly formed group of Calgary youth have found a place to share their
views on what matters most to young people in Calgary. Responding to a call for volunteers, five former CPS
Cadets recently met with CPF and CPS representatives to discuss strategy to inform and educate decision-makers
on youth issues of today as it pertains to crime and victimisation.

We hope that as the group grows, we can continue to share with you our readers “Youth Views” in every CPF E-
News. Following our first meeting in February we asked the youth a few questions. Take a look at what one of the
responders had to say!

The Calgary Police Service Cadet Corps Program
                                                   helped me to...
become someone who I am proud of. As a former cadet, the
program was more than just a place to make friends and
have fun. When I reflect on the skills that I’ve held onto and
the lessons that I learned through perseverance, these
experiences have changed the way I think and feel about
who I am and where I have the potential to go. It has also
helped me to continuously hold myself to the same high yet
achievable professional standards that the program’s
coordinators and civilian instructors expected from me.

To stay safe from crime and victimisation in Calgary, I
think all children and youth need…
to develop strong support systems, which act as protective
factors against criminogenic tendencies. Whether it be a lack
of friends at school, or emotionally unavailable parents,
there are several factors that set the stage for weak social
bonds and increase the likelihood of youth forming stronger
                                                   delinquent bonds.

If I were to meet the funders of the CPS Cadet Corps
                                                   Program today I would say...
If one’s risk of engaging in crime is influenced strongly by the
experiences, behaviours, and attitudes of others, than there
should be a heightened need to ensure that youth are
exposed to positive influences and interactions through
                                                   programs like the Cadet Corps.

                                                                                                                      6
