News and Notes – January 2021 GIAC Senior Program Happy holidays, Happy New Year! The 2021 New Year is upon us and as we reflect back, I'm happy to say that GIAC has made it through the initial unknown period of the Coronavirus, we adapted our programs to go virtual with a few in-person lunches with social distancing to still encourage the camaraderie and engagement the senior program is known for. We know it is not the year any of us could have imagined; however, our craft and yoga/meditation classes and monthly senior breakfast (with breakfast delivery and entertainment) continue, our grocery shopping services is available to help keep seniors out of the grocery stores, and senior well-being check-ins are happening frequently so we can support those who need uplifting. If we cannot help, then chances are we have resources in the community we can call on to help support our local seniors. Our motto this year has been GIAC STRONG because when it comes to community, GIAC continues to work through the challenging times and still do all we can to serve the needs of our community and senior population. Since the bulk of 2021 will still be unpredictable and, even in the most optimistic projections, society is still looking at modified programs possibly until the end of summer. Thus, the GIAC Senior Program is announcing that any senior who was a member in 2020 will be AUTOMATICALLY REGISTERED for the new year. Essentially, GIAC is giving you a second year of membership. With that said, it is absolutely vital that the Senior Program stay viable and generate revenue to help the long-term sustainability of the program and meet our financial obligations. So, I intreat you to contribute the normal membership fee of $55 (or more) if you are able as a donation to the GIAC Senior Program. If not the full amount, we hope you will contribute what you can (since this is a donation, I can send you a receipt for tax purposes, let me know if I should). Please help the GIAC Senior Program remain STRONG and engaged with as many seniors as possible in the seasons ahead. Should you have any needs or ideas for virtual programs for the upcoming months, let me know. For those needing 1
assistance with technology to take part in virtual programs, we can help you navigate how. We will return better and stronger together, and I want you to be part of it! 2021 comes in much the way the 2020 goes out, but it does feel good that we have the hope and promise of a new year! This is the way I see the program going for the months. While it is winter and the cold weather persists, the program will continue as it has for the past couple of months, primarily online with Zoom events on a variety of topics. We will still deliver meals for the breakfasts and offer transportation to shop occasionally. As the weather improves (and assuming the pandemic subsides), we will gather for outdoor, social distanced lunches or some other type of programming. Perhaps by summer, we will feel comfortable riding in vans, or some other contained space, together. I hope to take a feel charter bus trips next year…perhaps Turning Stone or one (or more) of the nearby casinos, a boat ride, and/or Lights on the Lake. No one can anticipate how next year will play out, but we can be hopeful for a quick return to normality (or closer to it). Like everywhere, the success of the vaccine rollout will dramatically affect what the program looks like. Let us hope that the vaccine is effectively distributed and highly successful. I encourage you all to take advantage of the opportunity of receiving the vaccine if/when it is offered. As you all are senior citizens, perhaps you will have access in a month or two. Remember, virtual programming is available on a computer using the Zoom app, but also to anyone that has a phone. If you are interested but have not been able use either your computer or your phone to access this type of program, get in touch with me in advance…it is not too difficult, I will give you a tutorial. He attended the University of North Carolina, where he studied with the poet Fred Chappell. After working as a salesman, housepainter, and farmer, he joined the faculty of Cornell University where he teaches English and creative writing. Although some consider Morgan an Appalachian regional writer, Morgan has lived for most of his adult life in central NY, where he has taught at Cornell University since the early 1970s. In recent years Morgan has gained wide recognition as a prose writer, in large part due to the fact that Oprah Winfrey selected his novel Gap Creek for her book club in 2000. Like last month, we will deliver breakfast from Shortstop Deli to your door for $4. You have the choice of an English muffin sandwich with egg & cheese, egg/cheese & bacon, or egg/cheese & sausage. Please let me know your choice by 1/27. Perhaps with the local and national spike in cases, you might want to avoid grocery stores. Interested participants should contact me. I will submit your order through the Walmart website and set the delivery time. There is a $35 minimum order for any delivery. I get a message via email when the delivery departs Walmart and I alert the recipient. GIAC will bill you directly, there is no need for payment at the time of the delivery. • GIAC usually presents a breakfast program in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day in January. As of this writing, it is likely that we will sponsor a speaker sometime this month without a delivered breakfast. At this point, the date has not been set… watch social media and for email, we will publicize it widely once the speaker and date are ready to be announced. Please do not hesitate to contact me for information and clarification. Zack 4
