LANGUAGE LEVELS AND EXAMS All courses at the Goethe-Institut Glasgow are based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, which defines language skills as follows: The speaker can understand and use familiar, day-to-day expres- A1 Goethe-Zertifikat A1: sions and simple sentences and can introduce him/herself and Fit in Deutsch 1 others. He/she can ask other people personal questions and A1.1 (Young People) respond to such questions themselves. He/she can conduct a A1.2 basic conversation provided the other speakers speak slowly and Goethe-Zertifikat clearly and are willing to help. A1: Start Deutsch 1 BASIC USER The speaker can understand sentences and frequently used A2 Goethe-Zertifikat A2: expressions which relate to the immediate situation (for example Fit in Deutsch information about the speaker, about work etc). The speaker can A2.1 (Young People) communicate in familiar, simple situations about familiar topics. A2.1 He/she can describe his/her own background and education using Goethe-Zertifikat A2 simple constructions and can talk about the immediate surroundings and immediate needs. The speaker can understand the main points in a conversation B1 Goethe-Zertifikat B1 about familiar topics like work, school, free time etc. provided other speakers use clear standard language. The speaker can INDEPENDENT USER B1.1 manage most situations that can be encountered when travelling B1.2 in the target language’s country. He/she can speak coherently B1.3 about familiar topics and areas of interest using simple constructions. The speaker can understand the main points of complex texts B2 Goethe-Zertifikat B2 about concrete and abstract topics. In his/her own specialist area, the speaker can follow specialist discussions. The speaker is able B2.1 to communicate spontaneously and fluently, allowing a normal B2.2 conversation with native speakers without great effort on either B2.3 side. He/she can talk about a wide range of topics clearly and in detail. The speaker can understand a wide range of sophisticated, long C1 Goethe-Zertifikat C1 texts and can understand implicit meanings. The speaker can use the language in social and professional situations or in training PROFICIENT USER C1.1 and study both effectively and flexibly. The speaker can discuss C1.2 complex topics exhaustively and in a structured manner. C1.3 The speaker can effortlessly understand everything he/she hears C2 Goethe-Zertifikat C2: or reads. The speaker can communicate spontaneously, very GDS fluently and precisely and is able to communicate nuances of >C2 meaning.
OUR LANGUAGE COURSES At least until February 2022 all our coures take place online. There are, however, different formats to choose from. They differ in the degree of intensity, amount of self-study involved, and also how many online sessions are offered. HOW TO ENROL IN A COURSE Find out first what course format suits you. We are happy to advise you. If you are a new student to the Goethe-Institut and have some previous knowledge, we will offer a placement test. First, you will complete an online muiltiple choice test. This will be followed by a personal consultation with a teacher over the phone. The teacher will contact you to arrange a suitable time. Complete beginners can enrol directly on our website but are welcome to contact our Language Office for any queries about the course.
GENERAL LANGUAGE COURSES The aim is to develop speaking, listening, reading and writing skills as well as pronunciation. Following an individual language placement test, you can begin learning at the level suited for you. If you have no previous knowledge of German, you will automatically be enrolled in level A1. BLENDED LEARNING ONLINE ONLINE GROUP COURSES Combination of weekly online live A combination of independent study sessions (on ZOOM) and some study and some collaborative work with at home on our Moodle platform. fellow students.
