In terms of entry to Third Level Colleges all subjects count equally for CAO points. The only exception is Higher Level Maths In Higher Level Maths a H6 or higher will mean that 25 points are added to the points for the grade achieved. E.G. H4 in Higher Maths = 60 + 25 = 85 points All 3rd level colleges give the subject requirements necessary for entry to their courses in their Prospectus or on their website. Check…. Do you need a 3rd language or a Science/Lab subject? Do you need a specific subject for a specific course?
In addition to the Minimum Entry Requirements, additional subjects and grades may be required to gain entry to specific courses. For Example: Science: One or two science subjects depending on the course or university. Biology, Chemistry, Physics or Ag. Science (sometimes accept Maths or Applied Maths) Engineering: Honours Maths for Universities (Special Maths exam) Primary Teaching: H4 (Entry 2019 & 2020) in Higher Level Irish Veterinary Medicine /Dietetics/Pharmacy/Dentistry: Chemistry Medicine: HPAT + Chemistry + one science depending on location Art: Portfolio Trinity: Paramedical/science 2 Science Subjects
• In UCD a European language is not required for Engineering, Science or Agricultural Science. • In NCAD (National College of Art & Design) • Art counts as the third language. It is regarded as a visual language. • NB to check all subject and course requirement with each individual college or University
Nursing: Science subject Beautician: Biology Medical Sciences: 1/2 science subjects Many of these courses also have specific grade requirements e.g. H3 etc
