Suffolk Agricultural Association’s 9th Biennial Gardening Conference Gardeners’ Minds, Memories and Music Thursday 4 November 2021 Events Centre, Trinity Park, Ipswich IP3 8UH and live-streamed Kindly sponsored by
Introduction Join us please on Thursday 4 November for wider perspectives on the "Gardeners’ Minds, Memories and Music". 9.30am Registration and Coffee 10.00am Chairman’s Introduction – Alan Gray Alan Gray and his partner Graham Robeson have created a remarkable garden during the past 30 years, close to the sea in northeast Norfolk: the garden benefits from a microclimate allowing many tender plants to flourish. A much-visited garden by visitors from across the globe. As one project follows another, no wonder Christopher Lloyd referred to them as “the unstoppable gardeners”! 10.10am “The Well Gardened Mind” - Dr Sue Stuart-Smith Sue Stuart-Smith, a prominent psychiatrist and psychotherapist, graduated in English Literature from Cambridge before starting to train as a doctor. She worked for the National Health Service for many years, becoming the lead clinician for psychotherapy in Hertfordshire. She teaches at the Tavistock Clinic in London and is Consultant at DocHealth, a not-for-profit service helping doctors suffering stress and burnout. She is married to Tom, the celebrated garden designer and, over thirty years together, they have created the wonderful Barn Garden in Hertfordshire. Her book - The Well Gardened Mind, was published in 2020 and became a Sunday Times bestseller and a Times Book of the Year. It has been translated into fifteen languages. 11.15am “Downsizing” - Mary Keen Mary Keen is an internationally known designer, writer and lecturer. She was a member of the National Trust Gardens Panel for twenty years. The author of six books, she writes from the heart rather than to order. She is a regular contributor to many newspapers and gardening magazines, both here and abroad. As a designer she worked for many years in partnership with Pip Morrison, preferring to make atmospheric gardens which look as though they have been there for ever. Her own garden at Duntisbourne Rous, which was regularly open to groups from all over the world, used to be her favourite project but she is equally excited by creating a new, small garden with three allotments. 12.15pm Two course lunch and shopping time with the trade exhibitors. 1.30pm “Bridgewater and Beyond” - Tom Stuart-Smith Tom Stuart-Smith is a landscape architect who works across the world; his style combines naturalism with modernity and built forms with romantic planting and he is now regarded as one of the world's leading thinkers on garden design. Besides creating the masterplan for the new RHS garden Bridgewater in the north, other recent projects include extensive work at Chatsworth, a new Islamic garden in Kings Cross and the dramatic recasting of a garden by St Paul's Cathedral with a vast water basin at its centre, reflecting Sir Christopher Wren's famous dome. Tom has eight Chelsea Gold Medal gardens to his name, including three "Best in Show" awards. 2.30pm Gardens and Gardening through Words and Music Something entirely different! Compiled by Andrew Leach, John Dyter and friends - between extracts of keyboard music associated with gardens, played on the piano by Andrew, there will be readings from gardening works across the generations narrated by Classic FM presenter - Catherine Bott. Andrew Leach is a pianist, organist, accompanist, composer and conductor. He directs Woodbridge Choral Society, including performances of Verdi's Requiem and Britten's War Requiem at Snape Maltings in 2018. He is also chairman of Ipswich Chamber Music Society and organist at St Mary Elms, Ipswich. Andrew was a music scholar at King's College, Cambridge and studied at the Royal Academy of Music. His teaching career included 20 years as Director of Music at Ipswich School. He likes to cycle to musical gigs wherever possible and in his spare time he enjoys walking, especially up the Scottish hills. Catherine Bott is the daughter and grand–daughter of gifted horticulturists but admits that she did not inherit the relevant gene, although during a distinguished singing and broadcasting career she has worked extensively with conductors John Eliot Gardiner and Edward Gardner. After a decade of combining concerts and recordings with regular presenting for BBC Radio 3 and 4, in 2013 she was invited to join Classic FM where she now presents a weekly live Sunday lunchtime programme.
