This week is Niuean Language Week. The theme for 2020 is Faliki e tau momoui he tau atuhau ke he Vagahau Niue ‘ which in English translates to, “Lay the foundations - give rise to Vagahau Niue for gener- ations”. In true Kelston style, we have had sharing of Niuean language and cultural practices. I hope that you have been following us on Facebook and learning about the language from our students. With Senior Assessment Week now complete, teachers will be busy getting marking done so that feed- back can be provided to students swiftly. It is pleasing to see the dedication and commitment to the practice external examinations that most students displayed. Their behaviour in the exam rooms was indicative of the understanding of the need to be respectful of others. For those who missed these assessments, it is vital for discussions to be had with subject teachers to work out a plan for catching up and completing assessments to the required levels. Senior students will be expected to be at school until 10 December. This will provide them with the maximum amount of time to finish their academic year successfully. I appreciate the support the school will receive from whānau on encouraging our students to be resilient and persevere to the end. Being at Alert Level 1 has been refreshing and most welcomed. Staff and students are definitely relieved to be able to go about their days at school with no restric- tions. It is absolutely wonderful to see sporting competitions return to the calendar and see our students take part in them with joy. Congratulations to our Rugby 7s teams who have been very busy on the field with the senior team winning both the Westie Pies 7s tournament as well as taking out the Auckland Secondary School Senior 7s tourna- ment. Their superior performance in the latest competition saw them winning every single game they played. The junior team were runners-up in the Westie Pies tournament and at the time of writing this, is to play in the Auckland U15s 7s tournament. I am confident that they will do well enough to join the senior team in qualifying for the Condor 7s to be held in December. Besides Rugby 7s, Volleyball returns for another season, along with the continuation of Theatresports. ENROLMENT EVENINGS 3rd, 4th, 5th November On 29 October, the school will hold our annual Sports 3:30 - 7:00pm Awards Dinner. Interest has been so high that the event is There will be options to go on a tour of now sold out. I am looking forward to being able to formally the school. thank all our community volunteers, sponsors, staff and students for their support, contribution and participation in the school’s comprehensive sporting programme. It will be a night of celebration and enjoyment, and more importantly, an acknowledgement of the sporting excellence that we are privileged to have in the school. Kelston Boys’ High School has reviewed our Vision and developed a new one that we feel better reflects our aspiration for our students and staff. Our new Vision is “Inspiring Growth through Wisdom and Hon- our”. I am in the process of producing a short video to explain what the vision means and what direction this will take the school over the next three years. This will be shared with whanau in the next few weeks. Lastly, I would like to congratulate Carmel Sepuloni on her re-election as the Member of Parliament for Kelston. Carmel is an ardent supporter of the school and the Kelston community so it is wonderful to know that we will have another three years of her continued work to make our schools and community stronger. Have a fantastic long weekend ahead. Keep safe and enjoy. Vol. 1 - 08 APRIL 2020 Fakaaue Lahi Adeline Blair TO WISDOM WITH HONOUR Hei te Mātauranga i ōu nei Mana

2021 Entry Requirements Summer Start Programme Tēnā koe With the ongoing disruptions from Covid-19 many senior secondary students and the entire education sector has had to respond and adapt. How the University of Auckland responds to the impact on students in relation to pro- gression into university study has been a significant focus for us. We understand that for some students who started the year with the ambition of achieving UE and starting Uni- versity study in 2021, the ongoing impacts from the initial lockdown and second lockdown in Auckland may have a significant impact on their transition into tertiary education. Below is a summary of the initiatives the University has put in place for Year 13 students. Changes to entry requirements As previously communicated the University has already changed the entry requirements to our programmes for 2021 in recognition of the impact of Covid 19 on the 2020 cohort of senior students. We anticipate that these changes, along with NZQA’s change to the University Entrance requirement, will enable students on a track to access University study in 2021, to do so, despite Covid-19-related disruptions this year. Summer start Further to this we are pleased to announce a new programme called Summer Start – a six-week pro- gramme giving eligible school leavers the opportunity to gain credits towards their degree and start their University journey early. Summer start is aimed at increasing students’ preparedness for, and success from, their tertiary study. If students are planning to study with the University of Auckland in Semester One 2021, they can get a head start on their studies by joining us for Summer Start. The six-week programme commences Tuesday 5 January 2021, and students will complete one course that will go towards their University of Auckland degree programme before Semester One classes start on 1 March 2021. They will also receive transition readiness, academic and pastoral support to guide their suc- cess and enhance their learning in preparation for the rest of their University journey. The pastoral support is a key programme wrap-around, providing holistic support for students including access to Summer Start leaders, study skill sessions, orientation to both the University and Auckland City and fun activities such as sports and quizzes to introduce students to university life. If students intend to enrol in a different university after Summer School, they can still participate in the Sum- mer Start programme and may be able to transfer their credit. Summer Start is free for New Zealand school leaver students who meet the eligibility requirements of the New Zealand government’s Fees Free tertiary education initiative. There is a tuition cost and other charges for the credit-course within Summer Start but the charges will be paid through Fees Free if students are eligible. This programme complements Summer Start International – which is aimed at international students currently in New Zealand and are about to graduate from a New Zealand high school or foundation pro- gramme. Tuition fees and accommodation costs apply for Summer Start International. We are encouraging students to register their interest in Summer Start or Summer Start International – this will enable us to have a chat with them, understand what their aspirations are and how we can pathway them into their programme of choice. Further details on the programme are available on the University’s webpages for Summer Start or Summer Start International. Should you have any questions about Summer Start please email Cath Dunphy. For queries relating to Summer Start International, please email Karen Dorrian. Noho ora mai
S P O R T U P D AT E SPORTS SUDDENS WINS 4 th EXECUTIVE NATIONAL TITLE SUDDENS WINS 4 th EXECUTIVE NATIONAL TITLE SUDDENS WINS 4 th EXECUTIVE NATIONAL TITLE Nixon Suddens attended the NZ National Wrestling Championships recently and sent in the report below: I flew down to Dunedin with my family, teammates & Coach Karim to compete at the New Zealand National Wrestling Championships on the 2nd and 3rd of October at Taieri College. While this was just our third wrestling competition of the year, we normally compete in 6 to 8 events, we have been training right through and at home during lockdown. I competed in 2x divisions, placing 2nd in the Junior 17-20yo 65kg class the first day and taking gold in the Cadets 14-16yo class the next day. My younger brother Alex won all his matches in less than a minute by pin, tak- ing gold in his division. At Prizegiving I was awarded the Cadets trophy for being “The Most Scientific Wres- tler” This was my 4th consecutive national title since 2015 when I started competing at Nationals at age 10yo. I really enjoyed this competition because I had the opportuni- ty to wrestle against opponents from the South Island that I had never faced before. My next wrestling goal is selection for the NZ Oceania team early next year in American Samoa and I have aspirations to go to the next Youth Olympics in 2022. I also compete in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and I still have a couple more competitions left till the end of year to keep busy. Thank you for all your support. NOTICES It’s back for another FIGHT! COVID is back in our community What can I do to keep myself and my whānau safe? There are a number of simple but effective ways you can keep your family safe. These include: • Stay home if you are SICK • If you have symptoms: fever, runny nose, a cough, loss of taste or smell, please get a COVID-19 test , do not come to school when we re open if you are unwell • Cover your face when you go out • Keep track of where you have been • Wash your hands regularly • Cough or sneeze into your elbow THE GOLDEN RULES TO KEEPING EVERYONE HEALTHY 1. If you’re sick, stay home. Don’t go to work or school. Don’t socialise. 2. If you have cold or flu symptoms call your doctor or Healthline . 3. Wash your hands. Wash your hands. Wash your hands. 4. Sneeze and cough into your elbow, and regularly disinfect shared surfaces. 5. If you are told by health authorities to self-isolate you must do so immediately. 6. If you’re concerned about your wellbeing or have underlying health conditions, work with your GP to understand how best to stay healthy. 7. Keep track of where you’ve been and who you’ve seen to help contact tracing if needed. Use the NZ COVID Tracer app as a handy way of doing this. 8. Businesses should help people keep track of their movements by displaying the Ministry of Health QR Code for contact tracing. 9. Stay vigilant. There is still a global pandemic going on. People and businesses should be prepared to act fast to step up Alert Levels if we have to. 10. Whatever you’re feeling — it’s okay. Be kind to others. Be kind to yourself. FREE CATCH-UP IMMUNISATION FOR YEAR 13 STUDENTS Friday, 30 October 2020 at 8.30 to 11.30am Many young people missed out on immunisations to protect them from measles, mumps and rubella as children. Some young people may also have missed out on other immunisa- tions to protect them from whooping cough and some types of cancers. During 2020-21 there is a national catch-up campaign to ensure our community is protected against these diseases and our school is participating. In Term 4, we will have nurses in the school offering one dose of the MMR vaccine to our year 13 students who have no records of two doses of MMR vaccine, as well as offering HPV and Boostrix, if students require them. This service is free of charge. If you are a year 13 student and require any of these vaccinations (MMR, HPV or Boostrix) please visit the school clin- ic on 30 October. The clinic will run from 8.30am to 11.30am. Further information about these vaccines will also be emailed to all year 13 ATTENDANCE UPDATE - The Principle of Honest Attendance At Kelston Boys’ High School we believe giving our students the opportunity to be honest when signing in late via the Attendance Kiosk is giving them agency and giving us insight into the type of person they are. When clicking the reason for the lateness we expect they will tick ‘slept in’ if they have slept in and not ‘missed the bus’ as the reason. Having the choice to make a decision in life is life changing and promotes trust and strength of character and giving our students agency now sets a pattern of good decision making for the future. We don’t have the luxury of choosing the consequences of our decisions, however if we know what the consequences are before making the decision, we can choose wisely.
