2021 TERM 2, Week 4 28/05/2021 FROM THE OVAL From the Headmaster Associate of Honour - 2021 Mr John R Oliver Dear Parents, Caregivers and members of the community On Monday Mr John Oliver was named as a Southwell Associate of Honour for his service and commit- ment to his family, farming, the people of the King Country and Waikato, and Southwell. The occasion was held in All Hallows' Chapel before close family, students and staff. The Associate of Honour is the highest award the School can bestow on an individual. The award recog- nises inspiring role models for our students and is awarded to an old boy or girl or member of the commu- nity that is strongly connected to Southwell and who exemplifies the School values of excellence, integri- ty, creativity, caring, respect and resilience. The Associate of Honour has only been awarded five times in the past - Mr Brian Perry, Mr Grant Shar- man, Mr Andrew Patterson, Mr Murray Day and Mr Glenn Holmes. Mr John Oliver’s mothers generous support to Southwell in challenging times of the 1920’s helped South- well survive and was a key influence in him boarding at Southwell from 1946-1950. The Oliver family have been a part of Southwell for over a century with; Robert Oliver being the first student in 1911 John's father Ian started at Southwell in 1916 John was a prefect, captain of the 1st XV, 1st X1 Cricket, Swimming & Tennis champion, amongst many other achievements. John’s son Duncan and 17 grandchildren attended Southwell. Mr Oliver is a retired farmer from Otorohanga, having farmed in the Otorohanga District since 1961. To- gether with Mrs Oliver they have generously supported their local community over many years. On Monday I used our values to describe Mr Oliver’s character to our students: Excellence - Mr Oliver has and continues to give his best effort in everything he does. Integrity - Mr Oliver is a loving husband, father and proud of his large family. Creativity - Mr Oliver’s mind is creative and he is a catalyst for action in his communities from being instrumental in building health care facilities to ideas on farming. Respect - Mr Oliver has manners and he is respectful. He engages with everyone and is a great listener. He is fun to be around. Caring - Mr Oliver cares for his dog ‘Rags’, his wife Sarah, family, Otorohanga people, the King Country, Waikato and Southwell. He shows this care day by day and he makes a difference. Resilience - Mr Oliver is resilient. As a farmer, weathering the seasons and changing economic times, Mr Oliver is adaptable and has positive thinking at his side to endure the roller coaster of life. We are fortunate to have Mr John Oliver and his family weave their positive thread through our Southwell history and culture. Yours sincerely Jason Speedy

Kids’ Lit Quiz On Wednesday 19 May, the Great Hall was filled with excitement and an air of anticipation. 54 teams from around the Waikato had gathered for the 30th anniversary heat of the Kids’ Lit Quiz. It was the largest ever Waikato heat and, due to its size, meant that the top two teams qualified for the National Final. The ques- tions on the night ranged from nursery rhymes to Hindu mythology and from comics to classics. After a tense, exciting competition St Peter’s Cambridge were announced as the winners, with the two Southwell teams coming in second and third. This means that one of the Southwell teams qualified for the National Final. Congratulations to the following students who were amazing ambassadors for Southwell School: Southwell Team One: Aditya Manda, Frances Gregory, Grace Walden and Aria Jones Southwell Team Two: Evie Sharman, Lincoln Chapman, Mia Donovan and Anurag Manda. We wish Southwell Team One all the very best for the National Final on June 26.

Vacancy - Boarding House Assistant We have a vacancy for a Boarding House Assistant to help with the care and supervision of our male boarders. The position would suit a young male university student or professional who is looking to save on food and accommodation costs, and who is keen to make a positive difference in the lives of others. The position would also offer the opportunity of gaining useful practical experience in caring for young people. The boarding house is a vibrant, busy and stimulating environment and our Boarding House Assistants play an important role in making our boarders feel at home as well as providing positive role models for the children. Duties would include supervision of boarders during free time and during various boarding house routines mostly in the afternoon and evenings on two weekdays per week and on one or two weekends per term.
