HOME OF THE FRIENDLIEST PEOPLE ON THE BAY 37º 12' 20" N 76º 26' 11" W April 2022 Volume #42, Number 4 WWW.SEAFORDYACHTCLUB.COM FROM THE HELM Dear SYC Members, As April draws near and we have made it through several Nor’easters this winter, I hope you are excited as I am for all of the SYC events offered to the membership. Please review the SYC calendar for all upcoming events. I would like to update you on several projects and upcoming events of 2022. As promised the bath-house repairs are completed and ready for the upcoming boating season. I want to thank Jim Blotter and house and grounds committee members for handling this project to completion. Ginger Smith and committee members are proceeding to review and update the SYC Policies and Procedures; please reach out to Ginger Smith if you have any input or would like to get involved in the updating process. Our Treasurer Linda Reviea has spent hours updating Quick Books and has implemented on-line banking. We are still working out the details and will keep the membership advised as to the progress bringing SYC up to date and the advantages this will bring to the club. Members Spring Cleanup – Historically, the club hosts the annual spring cleanup, given the amount of general clean up that is necessary from this winter’s storms, we plan to host this spring cleanup on 9 April with a rain date of 16 April. We will give everyone plenty of warning via the website and emails so you can plan accordingly. It will be a fantastic way to kick off the season and a perfect opportunity to put some shine back on the Seaford Yacht Club. House And Grounds – Thanks to all the volunteers that helped with the installation of our tent covers on the back deck and the Dock. This can only happen when the membership gets involved to make this work simple and easy; as they say many hands make easy work. One other item to mention is the flag pole needs to be dropped sanded and painted before we have our flag raising, any and all interested in helping reach out to Jim Blotter.
HOME OF THE FRIENDLIEST PEOPLE ON THE BAY 37º 12' 20" N 76º 26' 11" W April 2022 Volume #42, Number 4 WWW.SEAFORDYACHTCLUB.COM FROM THE HELM, con’t Forward Looking - There are several key objectives that continue to guide our efforts for the Club. We are proud to say we have made great progress toward meeting these goals: Sustainability. Maintaining a vital Membership and addressing the Membership with new members. We should look to elect younger Trustees to the Board, to gain from their perspective and to begin to pass the mantle of responsibility for governance of the Club. Physical and Financial Health. Maintaining a strong balance sheet and making long-term investments to have a strong balance sheet with a substantial cash balance to generate operating surplus to contribute to future funding of capital expenditures. Community. Ensuring the Club is a welcoming, safe, and enjoyable place for members and guests alike. The Club and its Membership remain as committed as ever to treating everyone with dignity and respect, and to maintaining our fine reputation within the yachting community. The Officers and Board take this commitment seriously. The communications committee headed by Jaclyn Smith continues to work hard, even overtime. Pete Showalter is also working to improve communications within the Club and particularly for new members of SYC. The Member’s Directory is now in the Barnacle; please stop by and pick it up at your convenience. Please look at our upcoming Cruise events, the Shake Down Cruise is scheduled for 23 April 2022, be sure to sign up for this fun weekend. Origin of Nautical Terms: Coxswain - A coxswain or cockswain was at first the swain (boy servant) in charge of the small cock or cockboat that was kept aboard for the ship’s captain, and used to row him to and from the ship. The term has been used in England dating back to at least 1463. With the passing of time the coxswain became the helmsman of any boat, regardless of size. SYC HAPPY HOURS If you are interested in hosting a Happy Hour at SYC in 2022, please contact the Happy Hour Committee. Hosting a happy hour just means that you are responsible to open up the Club and be sure it is left clean and lock up the clubhouse. Depending on the weather, you can choose to hold the happy hour inside or outside. There is a Happy Hour Bin in the supply room that has all the needed supplies (plates, cups, plasticware, napkins, etc). At the end of the night, be sure everything is left in good order (wipe up any messes and trash dumped) put the Happy Hour Box away. March Dinner Write Up Tuesday night was the greatly anticipated St. Patrick’s Day dinner hosted by Joan and Bill Edmonds. There were over 100 people in attendance, which indicates we seem to be returning to normal at SYC. As always, the food was delicious – corned beef, cabbage, carrots, potatoes, onions, Irish soda bread and a host of different desserts. Everyone enjoyed the meal and each other’s company. I intend to use this sentence in every article I write, because it is true. The beer stein holding contest for lads and lassies was good fun – Jenny Treacy won in the women’s contest and Ryan Wainwright took the men’s honors. Bill and Joan’s helpers included Janet and Bob Beilhart, Nancy and Barry Shrout, Fran and Tom Butterfoss, Kevin MacRitchie, Celia and Tim Whitlatch, Cathy and Tom Clark, Lillian Downs and Mark Hinman. As always, thanks to our biermeister Tom Feldhaus and the host and hostess at the Hinman’s Irish Pub - Mark Hinman and Lisa Carrington. Jimmy Jones and Mike Webb talked about the Shakedown and Memorial Day Cruises that are coming up. There were so many guests there. It was particularly fun to see the Priseler’s and the Cummins’. Our newest member, Lisa Carrington, a legacy member (Mark and Nancy Hinman’s daughter) was recognized and received her SYC burgee and new member paraphernalia. The Shanty Grass Band entertained us before, during and after dinner. The raffle was also fun – probably because I actually won something. Remember your calling committee person will either email you to remind you to sign up on the SYC website. Your calling committee person will sign you up if you are unable to take care of it yourself. Respectfully Submitted, Linda Blotter
Burn Your Socks Write Up & Pictures Ahhh. That time of the year when you realize boating season is not far away and you will not need socks for a few months. Jim and I had a great time hosting the BYS party this year as it seems the SYC community is getting back to normal. We hope everyone noticed the socks hanging from the chandelier. Thanks to Bob and Janet Beilhart for the socks. We decided to keep the vibe quiet this year, so the music was subdued. We love that the Barnacle area is being used. March Madness was in full swing Saturday night. The food was delicious and included bratwurst, hashbrown casserole, salad, and corn (which received numerous compliments). Dessert included mini eclairs, cream puffs and s’mores. As always, the group of people who helped us did an amazing job. Shout out to the following people: Mark and Nancy Hinman, Bob and Janet Beilhart, Joan and Bill Edmonds, Bill and Kelli Wilshire, Walt and Laurie Ulbricht, Tom Feldhaus, Kevin and Tina McRitchie, Lisa Carrington, Bobby Coleman, Cliff and Vikki Collier, Stefanie McDermott, Jamie Smith, Jimmy and Betty Ann Jones, and Mike and Carol Brower. We hope we haven’t missed anyone. Many s’mores were cooked on the fire and a few socks were burned, so thank you to Chris Blotter for keeping the flames going. - Jim and Linda Blotter
