ABOUT MELBOURNE FRINGE Melbourne Fringe is a celebration of cultural democracy and art for everyone. By embracing diversity and a spirit of independence, we create a unique space for artistic self- expression linked to the life of our great city. We’re here to challenge perceptions and shake up the hierarchy, to be brave and unafraid, to explore the boundaries of what art is and can be. And what’s more, everyone’s invited. That’s why Melbourne Fringe is the most adventurous, inclusive, all-encompassing multi-artform festival in Australia. Every year we feature more than 6000 artists from every discipline, performing 400+ events in over 160 metro and regional venues to an audience in excess of 300,000 people. Melbourne Fringe is the place to go for pure, unadulterated, uncurated and unexpected artistic discovery. We help artists develop and provide a platform for a vast, diverse range of voices, in celebration of the idea that when we come together, we create meaning, and beauty, and laughter. This is art by the people, for the people, with the people, so come on in, people. This is Melbourne Fringe. Giorgia Pisano, Gesso. Photo by Kristina Arnott.
ABOUT FRINGE FURNITURE Eamon Riley, Bar-code. Photo by J. Forsyth. From the reassuringly practical to the confusingly obtuse, Fringe Furniture has seen it all. A boundary-pushing showcase of cutting-edge design, this is no Ikea showroom (though you might still find something comfy to sit on). Established as an experimental playground, Fringe Furniture is a standout exhibition of emerging and market-ready design and has provided a platform for artists and designers to exhibit their work for 33 years, making it one of the longest design events in Australia. Artist and designer, Bruce Filley conceived Fringe Furniture in 1986 with a vision of establishing a public forum that presented alternative ideas in furniture design. Throughout its history, Fringe Furniture has continually interrogated this vision by showcasing contemporary works that push boundaries and offer new possibilities. Fringe Furniture is an open-access event, meaning that anyone can register to exhibit work. This open-access policy results in established and emerging designers coming together, with a combination of experimental and functional works and the presentation of fresh ideas alongside refined forms. The breadth of talent and skill that Fringe Furniture attracts can genuinely be considered a barometer for the city’s vibrant and cutting-edge design community. FRINGE FURNITURE 33 UNITE Sawdust Bureau, Ply Parasite. Photo by J. Forsyth. Object design has the unique opportunity to bring people together. Through the different elements of design – lighting, furniture, tableware, sculpture, and other unimaginable things – we are able to celebrate our individuality and our differences, while acknowledging the things that bind us together. With Melbourne Fringe’s relocation to Trades Hall – we focus on the power of collective action as a social movement to explore the individual versus the collective, as we come together, united, to shift and change perspective – seeing things differently to help re-vision our futures, together. What is the power of the object to give voice to the marginalised, to create change and to be a vessel for radical ideas? How might design be used as a political force to bring people together? We are ready to explore all of this and more this year, are you with us? Register at https://melbournefringe.com.au/participate/in-fringe-furniture/
FRINGE FURNITURE GENDER EQUALITY Fringe Furniture 32 Award Winners Photo by JW Forsyth. Following last year’s roaring success, our Fringe Furniture for Gender Equality initiative is back. Gender might be just a construct, but it’s a construct that sees men paid more than other genders in many industries – and the design industry is one of them. Thanks to the support of the Naomi Milgrom Foundation, Fringe Furniture is actively supporting gender equality in the design sector. To help redress the balance, we are offering: • A 15.3% discount off your rego fee if you are female identifying or non-binary. This figure represents the current gender pay gap in Australia. • Four mentorships dedicated to female identifying and non-binary designers. The program pairs industry leading female identifying designers with emerging designers. • A public talk by an industry leading female identifying designer. • Additional profile-raising opportunities, including artist tours of the exhibition led by female identifying and non-binary participants. Go on, spruik your work. The best bit? This initiative works. Last year, we successfully increased representation of female identifying and non-binary artists in Fringe Furniture and provided them with key professional development opportunities. And that’s what this initiative is all about. Equality. That’s it. Just equality.
WHO CAN TAKE PART? Fringe Furniture is open to all Australian based artists and designers, both emerging and established. For established practitioners, Fringe Furniture is a yearly catalyst for experimentation providing a place to present new prototypes or explore ideas that are free from the restrictions of the commercial environment. For emerging artists/designers the exhibition is a valuable platform for generating exposure, building mentoring opportunities and expanding networks. Fringe Furniture designers also have the opportunity to participate in a Mentorship Program, win Fringe Furniture Awards, deliver talks about their work, and participate in the delivery of Tactile Tours. All Fringe Furniture participants also receive a Melbourne Fringe Artist Pass, granting them access to hundreds of Melbourne Fringe Festival shows for free. What kind of work can I submit to Fringe Furniture? While we’d love to see as many pieces as possible created in response to the provocation, Unite, Fringe Furniture is also open to new or existing works that have nothing to do with this theme. Fringe Furniture is as much about showcasing the most innovative and up-and-coming work as it is about exploring and pushing the boundaries about what we mean by “furniture”. Show us your experimental forms and materials, your non-functional or functional objects, your wearable and ephemeral works. If you are not sure whether your art form or design fits give us a call to talk about it! Fringe Furniture is also open to pieces that can be displayed in outdoor spaces. If your work can withstand the elements, this is a great opportunity to situate it in an unusual context throughout the grounds of the Abbotsford Convent. How much does it cost? Registration for Fringe Furniture costs $185 for organisations/designers working for organisations or $95 for independent designers. The registration fee must be paid at the time of registration. Thanks to the generosity of the Naomi Milgrom Foundation, female-identifying designers will receive a gender pay gap discount of 15.3% off full-price registrations, making their registration fee $156.70 or $80.50 independent. For more information, see the Fringe Furniture for Gender Equality section above. For Fringe Furniture 2019 multiple entries per artist or designer will be accepted, and all subsequent entries after your first will incur a fee of $95. If you’d like to submit more than two works, please contact the Fringe Furniture Coordinator before completing your registration to discuss this. Exhibition space is limited so get in quick to avoid missing out! How can I find out more? Feel free to contact the Fringe Furniture Coordinator with any questions you have by calling (03) 9660 9600 or emailing projects@melbournefringe.com.au
RALPH MCLEAN MICROGRANTS Do you need some help covering your rego fee? Our newly expanded Ralph Mclean Microgrants for Fringe Furniture program offers free registrations for artist and designers who are facing structural disadvantage. This includes designers from diverse backgrounds and identities like artists who are from the LGBTQI+ community, artists who are Deaf or have a disability, First Nations artists or artists who are culturally and linguistically diverse. We also recognise that some artists face other disadvantages, the things that make it an unequal playing field, like being a single parent, or a carer, having no financial support from family and friends, or a lack of access to education. Then these microgrants are also for you. These are just some of the things that create obstacles for artists who want to participate in the Festival. This is by no means an exhaustive list and if you are unsure, just ask us. Ralph Mclean Microgrants is our way of making sure that anyone can participate in Fringe Furniture. Who was Ralph? Ralph Mclean was a Fringe board member, all-round legend and a champion of diversity in the arts. The Ralph Mclean Microgrants program was established with the generous support of his friends and family to help continue his legacy. Successful applicants will have their Fringe Furniture Registration fee covered for their proposed project. To apply, click here or go to https://melbournefringe.com.au/participate/in-fringe-furniture/ Fringe would like to thank the family and friends of Ralph Mclean, Michael Agar and Caroline Farmer, Tamara and Mark Boldiston, Jason Craig, Dan Koop and Maggie Maguire OAM for their amazing support of this program IMAGES All designers must submit at least one hi res image as part of their registration. Think carefully about making time to photograph your work, either finished or as a work in progress. A good image/s of your finished work can convey the aesthetic and features of your piece, the story you are trying to tell and the properties of the materials you have used. If you are in the process of creating a new work for Fringe Furniture, please include an image that conveys a sense of the work in progress. This could be a sketch, a design or a photograph of the work in progress. Once the work is completed please send through a hi-res image of the finished work. Your image/s may be used in the exhibition brochure, online and for publicity purposes. If you have any questions about images, please contact the Fringe Furniture Coordinator.
MENTORSHIP PROGRAM As part of Fringe Furniture, registered artists can apply for our Mentorship Program. This program supports six emerging designers and artists to develop their artistic and professional practice by connecting them with industry professionals. As part of the Fringe Furniture for Gender Equality initiative, four mentorships will be offered to female identifying or non-binary participants in 2019. What is involved? • Each mentee will have a one-on-one session with a mentor to foster personalised advice and engagement. • Mentees will participate in a series of three seminars, one with each mentor. In these seminars mentees engage with each of the mentors as a group. • Mentees will be asked to participate in a public artist talk at the end of the Fringe Furniture exhibition in which they will be asked to reflect on their experience. Who are the mentors? Three mentors are selected from a cross-section of the design industry with areas of expertise including design, manufacture, business management, and marketing and development. The 2019 mentors will be announced soon. Past mentors have included: • Kate Stokes – Coco Flip • Tara Wilcox and Nicola Grey – Redfox and Wilcox • Dale Hardiman and Adam Lynch – Dowel Jones Things to consider when applying for the mentorship: • What do you hope to achieve from the mentorship? • What particular areas would you like to develop? • How much time do you have to commit to the mentorship? How to apply: To apply for the Fringe Furniture mentorship, please answer the relevant questions when you complete your registration. You’ll be asked: • How would you describe your design practice? • What have you witnessed in contemporary design lately that has challenged or influenced your practice? • Have you had previous experience of a professional development opportunity? If yes, can you describe this experience and what you got out of it? • What do you hope to achieve and/or learn from the Fringe Furniture Mentorship Program? • What are you most interested in learning from the mentors? What areas of design practice would you like to develop? Register at https://melbournefringe.com.au/participate/in-fringe-furniture/

Led by an experienced accessibility guide, visitors will be encouraged to engage with the works through informed discussion and touch. Fringe Furniture designers are encouraged to participate in our Tactile Tours program in a number of ways. You can: • have your work included as part of the tour - this means it may be touched and handled by tour attendees (taking into account any handling instructions you provide) • attend a free Audio Description training session in which you’ll learn how to describe your work in ways that make it more accessible to audiences with Vision Impairment • offer to give a short artist talk during a Tactile Tour • attend a Tactile Tour as an audience member or as an assistant Please register your interest in any or all of these opportunities by answering the relevant questions in your registration. Artist Led Tours Three artist led tours of Fringe Furniture will be taking place during the exhibition period. This is an opportunity for artists to discuss their work with the public, gain skills in public speaking and for audiences to learn more about the object and process of design and creation. Of the three tours, one will be led by female identifying designers as part of the Fringe Furniture for Gender Equality program. If you are interested in participating in the artist led tours as a speaker or a spectator, you can register your interest during the registration process.

Please note: • Plinths must be provided by the exhibitor • Plinths must be within 10% of your item size • Plinths must be white For items to be displayed at ground level the plinth should be 100mm high and the width and depth should adequately stage your piece. Please discuss this with Melbourne Fringe as required.
LIGHTING, WORKS THAT REQUIRE POWER AND HANGING OBJECTS Where possible, lighting will be suspended from overhead beams (subject to space, layout, design and OH&S concerns). If the work you are submitting is a light or other work that requires power, please enter as much information as possible in your registration form, including the amount of power your work requires. Installation of your work will be dependent on it meeting size or weight restriction requirements and installation guidelines as provided by the Abbotsford Convent. Please note that these works will be in the elements and accessible to an audience that is inquisitive and likely to want to interact with outdoor works. While all due care will be taken, Melbourne Fringe and the Abbotsford Convent cannot accept responsibility for damage to works. ENTRIES The Registration Fee for entry is $185 for organisations or $95 for independent designers. Female-identifying designers will receive a gender pay gap discount of 15.3% off registrations, making their registration fee $156.70 (Commercial) or $80.50 (Independent Designer). Any affected entrants will be notified and any Registration Fees paid will be reimbursed. PAYMENT Payment must be made at the time of registration. Payment is made via credit card using PayPal. SAFETY AND RISK MANAGEMENT The Abbotsford Convent is visited by a range of artists, community members and families. Whilst we will provide ‘Do Not Touch’ signs for fragile items, it is important to remember that the space is a hands-on environment which encourages visitor interaction. All works should be mindful of the environment they will be displayed in. If you have any specific instructions for the handling, installation and display of your work please outline them when you register or contact Melbourne Fringe to discuss. Melbourne Fringe’s Risk Management Consultant will inspect each work submitted for inclusion in Fringe Furniture to assess risks. All work submitted must be of exhibition standard, be ready for display and should not be in a form that may cause harm to persons or damage to any other work. If your work includes any electrical components you will need to ensure a qualified electrician has carried out a certified inspection, and that the work is tested and tagged. Any work that does not comply with these requirements may be withdrawn and not displayed. Entrants will be notified by the Melbourne Fringe and any Registration Fees paid will be reimbursed. If you are unsure, please contact us to discuss your work. On request, we can also provide further information on the risk management requirements.
“G” RATING Once again, please remember The Abbotsford Convent is an environment visited by a broad audience including families with children. The Abbotsford Convent is open to the general public so works must comply with their standards and requirements. If there are any issues you will be contacted and advised directly. Works will be assessed by Melbourne Fringe prior to installation and those works deemed challenging to this rating could be removed from the exhibition. Entrants will be notified by Melbourne Fringe and any Registration Fees paid will be reimbursed. As above, if you are unsure, contact us to discuss your work. On request, we can provide further information on the venue’s standard exhibition policies. PUBLICITY IMAGES Melbourne Fringe requires at least 1 high resolution image of each entry as part of the registration process. Please provide the highest quality images you can in either JPG or TIF format. The minimum resolution is 300dpi. Melbourne Fringe works throughout the year to promote our participating artists, and Fringe Furniture is no exception. Over the years Fringe Furniture has established contacts and generated growing interest by local and national design media. By providing us with high quality images of your work as early as possible, you will help us to promote Fringe Furniture and the work of everyone involved. It is recommended you use a professional photographer, as the quality of the image will improve your chances of print media accepting your work for publication, or of the image being included in the exhibition catalogue. The better the image, the better your artwork will be represented! However, even if you have not completed your work by the time registrations close on 2 July 2019, it is important to provide us with an image of your work in progress to give us an indication of how the finished work will appear. This could be a simple sketch or an image that conveys the aesthetic and/or features of your piece or even the story you are trying to tell. Images of unfinished works will not be used in publicity opportunities, but please send whatever you have to help in planning the installation and layout of the exhibition. As part of the Conditions of Entry and by providing us with an image you understand that these may be used in the Fringe Furniture 2019 Exhibition Catalogue, on our website and for publicity purposes. In addition, you agree that Melbourne Fringe may reproduce the work or any part of it, only for the purposes of: 1. Fringe Furniture publicity and critical review 2. Melbourne Fringe publicity, documentation and reporting to our partners, including government 3. Inclusion in a non-commercial image archive TRANSPORT, DELIVERY AND COLLECTION Each entrant is responsible for transport of their work to and from the exhibition space, at the date and time nominated by Melbourne Fringe. All costs associated with delivery and collection must be paid by the exhibitor. All work must be delivered to the venue as arranged with the Fringe Furniture Coordinator between 6 - 8 September and collected on Monday 30 September, as instructed by Melbourne Fringe. There is no availability for storage at The Abbotsford Convent after this date. Once registrations are finalised Melbourne Fringe will contact the artist regarding delivery times and locations. All day parking is available in the car park directly across from the Convent on St Heliers Street. At present the machines accept cash only. There is limited drop off space in St Heliers Street. All cars must dispatch work as quickly as possible. Delivery and collection is via the front entrance. Please ensure your work can be moved safely through the front door which measures 1400mm (w) x 2440mm (h). If you have large work, please discuss this with Melbourne Fringe.
Please note: • Protect your safety while you’re installing! • Whether you are just dropping off your work or installing it, appropriate clothing must be worn on site at The Abbotsford Convent at all times. • Shoes must cover all sides of the foot, i.e. boots or runners. Thongs or sandals are not acceptable INSURANCE Due to the enormous variety of works exhibited, Melbourne Fringe does not insure your work. Any umbrella policy negotiated by Melbourne Fringe would result in excessively high costs being passed on to you, as Melbourne Fringe would have to seek coverage for every possible exhibited work. Each exhibitor is responsible for insuring their work against damage during transit to and from The Abbotsford Convent, while it is being installed and de-installed, and throughout the duration of the Fringe Furniture 2019 exhibition. If your piece is fragile please indicate this so we can try to ensure it is handled with extra care. We may also ask you to install your own work if it is very fragile. Please note that while all care is taken, Melbourne Fringe and The Abbotsford Convent cannot accept responsibility for damage of work during the exhibition display period. PARTICIPATION DURING THE EXHIBITION As part of your involvement in Fringe Furniture, we ask exhibitors to take part in supervising the gallery space during the exhibition. It is a rare opportunity to see how audiences interact with your work. We will have Melbourne Fringe Volunteers as well as exhibitors supervising the exhibition space. Please indicate in the online registration form the times that you would be available to participate as an invigilator. SALE OF WORK All work included in Fringe Furniture can be advertised for sale. The sales process will be managed from start to finish done by Melbourne Fringe, including collection and freight (unless otherwise requested). Melbourne Fringe will take a 15% commission on items sold from the exhibition, please factor this into your nominated sale price. Sale prices should include GST, if you are registered for GST. If you do not want to sell your work please indicate that it is “N.F.S” (Not For Sale) in the online Registration form. SUBMITTING YOUR REGISTRATION If you have any queries or concerns about any aspect of the exhibition of your work, please contact the Fringe Furniture Coordinator. In the event of a dispute that cannot be resolved within Melbourne Fringe to your satisfaction, both parties will agree on an external mediator as a means to resolution. In submitting your registration to exhibit your work in Fringe Furniture as part of the 2019 Melbourne Fringe Festival, you warrant that the work is able to be exhibited in a public space both legally and safely, and you take full and final responsibility for this. You, the Artist, warrant to Melbourne Fringe that you have obtained all necessary licenses, permissions or any other relevant intellectual property rights that might be needed for the exhibition of your original work. The Artist will indemnify Melbourne Fringe in respect of any claims, damage, loss, liabilities, costs, charges or expenses that are suffered or incurred by Melbourne Fringe as a result (whether directly or indirectly) of the Artist’s failure to obtain all such necessary licenses, insurances or permissions. The Artist also indemnifies Melbourne Fringe against any and all claims, actions, damage, loss, liabilities, costs, charges or expenses that are suffered or incurred by Melbourne Fringe as a result (whether directly or indirectly) of any act, default or negligence of the Artist, its artists, agents, employees or contractors in connection with the exhibition of the work.
