It was also lovely to see the enjoyment on their faces! Also impressive was the delicious ethnic food on sale. Last Friday, the Health and PE Learning Area took 68 students from Level 2/3 to the 2021 Secondary Schools Tough Guy/Gal mud run in Helensville. This was a further assessment opportunity for them to gain performance standard credits. Selwyn was one of the toughest schools to compete against in Auckland with 3 finishers in the top 12! Brock Fenwick finished on the podium (3rd) from a field of well over 900 runners with a time of 31.28s with Ashton Reed 9th and Josh Sunkel 12th. Well done to everyone!
An Impressive Senior Open Speech Competition 2021 Last week some of our students were treated to a diverse range of speeches from Year 12 and 13 students in the Senior Open Speech Competition. This is a voluntary presentation and our eight speakers gave varied interpretations of the topics. These included the value of youth, the importance of stepping outside your comfort zone, and the value of history as a means to move forward. Our first place winner, River Drefers, delivered an exceptionally well crafted speech on the interpretation of courage, that included some thought provoking and inspirational family history. Congratulations to all participants. Our overall place winners were: 1st River Drefers 2nd Mattie Nicholson 3rd Evelyn Turin Selwyn Physics Students Enjoy the NZ Engineering Science Competition Last weekend, sixteen senior Physics students competed against 200 teams in the NZ Engineering Science Competition sponsored by University of Auckland. Students were presented with an open-ended question at 10am and had to submit a report of 10 pages or less by 6pm. This year’s question was: “How many 1 in 100 year extreme weather events can NZ expect to experience over the course of the next decade?”. Teams are judged on how they interpret the question, the assumptions made while answering the question, their mathematical modeling and final answer to the question. The results will be announced in November. We are pleased to have had so many keen students engaged in this exciting competition this year - it really demonstrates their Investment, Resourceful- ness and Curiosity In Science!
