Maryland Native Wildlife: mature trees that aren’t stressed. After 6-10 weeks, the eggs will hatch and the first instar nymphs Brood X Periodical Cicadas will fall on to the ground, burrowing in the soil to start the cycle all over again. They’re coming! Are you ready?! What does this emergence mean for your backyard? The Maryland counties slated for mass emergence are: Allegany, Anne This year, an exciting phenomena is going Arundel, Baltimore, Carroll, Cecil, Frederick, Garrett, Harford, to occur in the eastern United States: the Howard, Montgomery, Prince George’s and Washington counties. emergence of Brood X periodical cicadas. Much of the eastern shore likely won’t get much action due to the Brood X is also known as the Great Eastern sandy soils, but some periodical cicadas might emerge. Brood and is one of 15 broods of periodical cicadas that appear regularly throughout the eastern United States. This brood has the largest range and concentration of any of the periodical cicadas. It is made up of three different species of Magicicada. For the last 17 years, Brood X cicada nymphs (juveniles) have been hanging out underground and feeding off of tree roots. Generally, these nymphs live about two feet under the surface and cause little harm to the trees. The nymphs go through five developmental stages known as instars, and the fifth instar is the one that makes its way to the surface once soil temperatures reach around 64 degrees fahrenheit several inches down. This timing is usually late April through mid-May in Maryland. The next stage of the periodical cicada’s life only lasts for a couple of weeks and has one sole mission: to reproduce. Males will begin singing their hearts out with a species-specific song while receptive females will respond. After mating, the female will find young twigs and will make a V-shaped slit in the bark to deposit her eggs. Each slit will contain around 20 eggs, and one female will lay up to 600 eggs total! Sometimes, the process of making the slits in the tree will cause the branches to break and/ or die. Harford County Youth Angler Catches Record Fallfish A Harford County youth angler has officially been recognized by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources as a new state record holder for fallfish in the nontidal division. Maxwell Diegel caught the 2.14-pound fallfish — Semotilus corporalis — on April 19 while fishing in Broad Creek, his local stream. The 13-year-old angler was fishing from shore with corn and worms when he hooked his record catch. “I knew I had something big when the rod bent in half,” said Diegel. Diegel’s catch broke the previous state record fallfish of 2.07 pounds by Adam Aghion in 2019. The fallfish weight was officially certified by Ashley Reimer of Conrad’s Crabs and Seafood in Bel Air. A Maryland Department of Natural Resources biologist confirmed the catch. After Diegel realized he had a new state record, he “danced around and did a celebration,” and said the catch even led to a summer job opportunity at the seafood market that weighed the fish. The department maintains state records for sport fish in four divisions – Atlantic, Chesapeake, Nontidal, and Invasive – and awards plaques to anglers who achieve record catches. Fish caught from privately- owned, fee-fishing waters are ineligible for consideration. Anglers who think they have a potential record catch should download and fill out the state record application and call 443- 569-1381 or 410-260- 8325. The department recommends the fish be immersed in ice water to preserve its weight until it can be checked, confirmed, and certified. SPANNING THE GLOBE Missouri man catches possible world record breaking spotted gar fish A lot of anglers have broken local records in the past year, but this latest fish might be a world record. The Missouri Department of Conservation has officially recognized a new state record for the largest spotted gar. According to the department, however, the new fish is reportedly large enough to set a new world record as well. The MDC issued a press release congratulating Devlin Rich for setting the new record by catching a 10-pound, 9-ounce spotted gar on Feb. 25. The fish was officially weighed on a certified scale in Williamsville and the score was verified by MDC staff. It is reportedly the second state record recognized by the department in 2021. According to the press release, Rich reeled in the spotted gar, which is apparently an accomplishment all on its own. Montana Ling a Ding! Fox News previously reported that Jerry R. Hall caught a 3-pound, 5-ounce Fallfish while fishing on the Cowpasture River in Lexington, Va., according to the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources (DWR). The fish also measured at 19-3/4 inches long. The previous record, set in 2020 by David Legg, weighed 2-pounds, 8-ounces. According to the DWR, Hall said, “I’m pro staff on the Limit Six Trout Team so I put a lot of time in on the water. For me, all the fishermen are a big family. That’s what Limit Six prides itself on; we’re a family. I love getting outdoors with my daughter and she loves to fish; it’s father-daughter bonding time. It’s not having to think about work or anything else that’s going on in the world. I am definitely going to get this record fish mounted.” Eric Wilcox and his fiance Lacy tag team a couple pig Steelheads on the Clearwater River in Idaho!
