MARCH 2021 Franciscan a monthly publication of St. Francis Episcopal Church I was overwhelmed by the love and support of St. Francis during my ordination to the priesthood on February 13. Thank you for the encouraging notes, the prayerful cards, the delicious desserts at the reception and the stunning stole and chasuble set for celebrating Eucharist during both Epiphany and Ordinary Time. Ordinary Time is also known as the Season after Pentecost and is the long season of the church year that runs until Advent. I look forward to being able to don the stole and chasuble again on the first Sunday after Pentecost, Sunday, May 30 and to put them to good use for the next six months following. I am especially appreciative of the monetary gifts for my clergy discretion fund. According to the canons of the Episcopal Church these funds are to be used for “such pious and charitable uses as the Rector or Priest-in-Charge shall determine.” This last year I made an additional contribution to the Springboro Community Assistance Center when their shelves ran low after Thanksgiving, and these funds allow me to support other worthy organizations or help those in need with personal concerns that are outside of our budget. The ordination service is available to watch on the Diocesan Vimeo site and I encourage you to do so, the liturgy and sermon were both great reminder of both the role of priests and the laity within the Episcopal Church. One charge in particular has stayed with me. My brother, the Church is the family of God, the body of Christ, and the temple of the Holy Spirit. All baptized people are called to make Christ known as Savior and Lord, and to share in the renewing of his world. Now you are called to work as pastor, priest, and teacher, together with your bishop and fellow presbyters, and to take your share in the councils of the Church… In all that you do, you are to nourish Christ's people from the riches of his grace, and strengthen them to glorify God in this life and in the life to come. I have been struck by the gravity of this charge. It is not a burden, for as Jesus says, “my yoke is easy and my burden is light,” but this charge is a great responsibility. I am honored to be able to stand before you each Sunday and offer all that Christ has in Word and Sacrament to nourish our community to live the way of love together. I especially appreciate how the charge to the priest is also a charge to the laity to remember that we are all called to share the good news of Jesus and to participate in the care and transformation of our world. We are in this together and I am humbled to be able to offer the riches of Christ’s grace to strengthen us for this work. This Lent we are on the journey through the wilderness to the baptismal waters of Easter, but we know that in God’s grace, we are provided springs of life along the journey to sustain and strengthen us. May you encounter the nurturing waters of God, our loving Creator, as you walk in the way of the Son by the strength of the Spirit. Serving with You, Father Jed “A Publication of St. Francis Episcopal Church—“Proclaiming the Good News in word and deed.”

READING BETWEEN THE LINES "Amazing Grace" H 1982 #671 The gift of forgiveness is often best appreciated by those who need it most. The Rev. John Newton (1725-1807) experienced this firsthand. As a young man, he was conscripted into the English Royal Navy. Once he left the navy he became a slave trader. But after one particularly violent storm off the coast of County Donegal, Ireland, when he called out to God for mercy, he became a Christian. After several more years as a slaver, he finally left the seafaring life and studied Christian theology. He was ordained in the Church of England in 1764 and became curate at Olney in Buckinghamshire where he began to write hymns. He wrote the words to Amazing Grace in 1772 to illustrate a sermon given on New Year's Day in 1773. Amazing Grace has been associated with more than 20 melodies. Composer William Walker set it to the tune New Britain which has become the best known tune used today, and the one used in our Hymnal 1982. Newton's tombstone tells the story of his life and conversion: "John Newton, clerk, once an infidel and Libertine, a servant of slavers in Africa, was, by the rich mercy of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, preserved, restored, pardoned, and appointed to preach the faith he had so long laboured to destroy". These words were written by Newton himself, a testimony to God's transforming power. With the message that forgiveness of sins committed and that the soul can be delivered from despair through the mercy of God. The hymn, however, faded into obscurity in England. But in the U.S. it began to be used by Baptist and Methodist preachers as part of evangelizing, especially in the South. Today it is one of the best known and popular hymns in Christian hymnody. When it was suggested to Newton that he retire at the age of 82 due to poor health and a failing memory, he responded: "My memory is nearly gone, but I remember two things - that I am a great sinner, and that Christ is a great Saviour!" Ephesians 2:8-9 - God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you cannot take credit for this: it is a gift from God. Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it.
