Planned silvicultural system and requirements
Planned silvicultural system and requirements An adaptive thinning from below (THB) treatment is proposed for the 14.7ha resulting in a well
spaced stand of trees.
Objective to remove smaller merchantable trees in the stand and retention of dominant and most
co-dominant trees the result to not exceed a 50% reduction in stand BA.
Prioritise the retention of high quality HBT 1 trees.
Removal of poorer quality over wood trees >60cm DBHOB permitted. (Retained mature BA should
not exceed 4m2)
Leave any current trees where their removal would result in large gaps or damage to regrowth.
Ad. THB treatment areas will remain stocked at 50% pre harvest Stand Basal Area and require no
further regeneration treatment.
An Adaptive Variable 1 retention silvicultural system is proposed for 3.88 ha of uneven aged forest
stand in northern treatment area.
Retained trees will be spaced at approximately 26m spacings.
2 additional recruitment trees per HBT 1 value will be retained as clumps.
Variable retention treatment area will be subjected to a mechanical disturbance regeneration
treatment. High amounts of retained trees within the coupe will reduce the amount of seed required
to be sown post site preparation if natural regeneration isnt adequate.
Additional specifications, requirements or instructions

Additional specifications, requirements or instructions Trees should be marked for retention until the Contractor or machine operator becomes proficient in
retaining the correct trees and achieving the desired basal area. Regular auditing required to ensure
compliance.
Fauna & Flora documentation to be provided.
5. Coupe boundaries
5.1 Marking a coupe Coupe has been marked using GPS Hip Chain Range Finder compass and clinometer. All external
coupe boundaries have been marked using Pink flagging tape except those with clear geographic
features.
Internal features such as exclusion areas are clearly delineated on a georeferenced map loaded
onto a tablet within the harvesting machine.
Northern TRP Boundary is marked to TRP boundary and merchantable timber line.
South and west boundaries have been marked to a 50m visual buffer in accordance with SMZ213
prescriptions.
Eastern boundary has been marked to TRP boundary and hydrology values with the application of
20m and 10m buffers where required.
Treatment areas are dissected centrally from west to east by significant internal gully. Internal
boundaries are marked to an extended hydrology buffer and contain numerous drainage lines that
link to central gully system.
5.2 Construction of boundary trails Boundary trails will be constructed during harvesting operations. In some cases boundary trails will
not be constructed depending on silvicultural system and planned regeneration treatment.
Burn break has been consructed prior to harvest in anticipation of DELWP FRB in area.
5.3 Location of Boundary Trails
5.4 Converting boundary trail to fire trail
6. Excluded areas
6.1 Activities in excluded areas No machine to enter or other operational activities to occur in any proposed excluded area unless
authorised by a VF representative.

Habitat Description and Marking Northern TRP Boundary is marked to TRP boundary and merchantable timber line.
All boundaries are marked with pink flagging tape filters are marked with orange flagging tapes
unless otherwise stated.
DELWP Pre harvest surveys identified 3 Yellow-bellied Gliders and 1 Sooty Owl within TRP.
Observations have been recorded in area north of central gully system.
A drainage line central to the coupe extending west to east has been excluded via an extended
hydrology buffer creating a wildlife corridor. This corridor protects water quality values and enables
local fauna movement through landscape to adjoining forest. Tree spacings within the THB and
VAR1 treatment areas support Glider movement throughout the landscape linked to retention and
corridors as planned refuge. A target post-harvest BA of >40% achieved through silvicultural intent
code exclusion and retention of HCVs is planned in consideration of Glider detections. Contractors
given photos of V notch trees (YBG feed trees) and requested to retain these trees if observed
during operations. Location of Sooty Owl detection within TRP boundary has been excluded from
planned treatment area the retention of Hollow bearing trees and exclusion of drainage lines
supports protection of potential Sooty Owl habitat.
Habitat recruitment is supported by Ad. THB by creating improved biodiversity. It enhances
conditions for the remaining stand and the development of understorey growth it promotes improved
wildlife habitat by enabling faster hollow development. Any HBT1 tree identified on the map or by
the contractor within the THB treatment area is to be retained. Recruitment is also promoted by the
26m tree spacings within the VAR1 treatment area and the retention of an additional 2 trees in a
clump per HBT 1 value identified. HBT 2 and 3 trees will be prioritised for recruitment where
possible.
Connectivity is supported through THB and VAR1 silviculture treatments due to high level of
retention throughout the planned harvestable area. The targeted Stand Basal Area reduction is 50%
within THB area and trees are to be spaced at approximately 26m within VAR 1 area. Connectivity
is further supported by the retention of a large internal hydrology buffer that dissects the planned
harvest area from west to east and 50m edge effect visual buffer off the Tyers-Walhalla Rd which
connects to adjoining forest.
