EDITORIAL Senior Final Series – Issue 2, September 8th & 9th, 2018 By MATTHEW DUCK Failing to plan is planning to fail. It’s an old adage but it still rings true. As we draw closer to the end of another season, it’s an important period for league and clubs alike to review the season and look at what we did well and what we need to get better at. From a league perspective, a number of elements are set to be considered by the Board, including the junior age structure moving forward and divisional player points and salary caps. These and other considerations will be finalised over the next fortnight. The weeks immediately proceeding the end-of-season also provide an opportunity to consider other initiatives in anticipation for the season ahead, including further expansion of the WRFL’s training and development space. The WRFL made a marked effort to increase its training opportunities in 2018, with six development sessions aimed at those running and/or looking to introduce female football. In WRFL Footy addition, the inaugural Victoria University WRFL/EDFL Volunteer’s Conference was Record an event focused on club planning, financial management, risk management and compliance, volunteers, development and community. The Conference received Western Region positive feedback and we’ll look to do it again. Football League But those additional training opportunities introduced in 2018 are still just scratching President the surface. Strategic planning workshops, a session(s) focused on the new Child Meredith Angwin Safety Standards, and further financial management support are just some of the topics slated for voluntary sessions over the back-end of this year and/or prior to next Level 1, Whitten season. Oval, Footscray With the development of the WRFL’s new website comes further opportunity to utilise the website as a hub of information for club administrators. My experience CEO as a club administrator was that at times you could drown in emails. The ongoing Matthew Duck development of ‘Club hub’, a portal on the website where key information, survey Office links and/or results, opportunities for clubs etc are universally shared stands to 03 9315 5400 simplify the process for administrators in keeping up to date with key happenings and requirements. Online support/education tools will also become more prevalent Editor moving forward, meaning people can access support when and where it suits them. Kristen Alebakis Focusing on key appointments, recruiting, budgeting, junior development, strategic planning etc., are just some of a host of activities clubs are about to embark upon, if not already. Not surprisingly, volunteers, or a distinct lack of, is a major threat to our clubs, and are closely related to player retention and financial stability. Easing the burden on volunteers remains a key objective, as is how we attract, recognise Cover: Altona Football Club and retain these individuals who underpin our clubs. If you’re reading this as a club captain Jordan Robbins in supporter, spectator, parent, friend or other, and you’ve thought about helping out action earlier this season. before but never have, I urge you to seek out your club president and offer to take on a job. Never has it been more important for our clubs and in turn our communities. Picture LOCAL LEGENDS I wish all clubs competing this weekend the best of luck – see you at the footy. DIVISION 3 SENIORS SHARKS BOOK GRAND FINAL SPOT By NICK BOYLAN The first week of Division 3 finals action saw two fantastic clashes, with teams braving the harsh conditions to put on a show befitting of September footy. At Braybrook, Point Cook Centrals showed their class with a hard-fought 17-point win over Tarneit, with the game having several momentum swings before the Sharks pulled away late. In the early stages, the game was much more contested, with both teams going goal-for-goal in the threatening conditions. Luke Cook and Adam Miriklis were working hard, and were able to give the Titans a five point quarter time lead. Sharks coach Darren Findlay wasn’t happy with his team’s lack of pressure, encouraging his players to tackle with aggression and to stop overusing the ball. Letting them know “the cute options aren’t going to work today, and to play through the middle”, the Sharks came out of the huddle with a much more direct approach in the second term.
