Reaching more West Aussies through our Mobile Foodbank For Western Australians needing food assistance, getting to our branches can be difficult without access to transport. Our Mobile Foodbank allows us to deliver essential food hampers to central locations in both metro and regional areas. Our Mobile Foodbank currently visits 22 locations. With thanks to Lotterywest and Northern Star Resources we are adding 5 more trucks to our fleet soon and will be able to reach even more West Aussies in Albany, Bunbury, Kalgoorlie, Peel and Perth. Network’s Kerri Buurman (left) volunteering on our Mobile Foodbank Our community donates tonnes of food for the homeless West Aussies who are homeless face extra burdens for accessing quality nutritious food. Without easy access to fridges, cooking equipment or even a can opener, it can be difficult to eat regularly. That’s why in March we called on our community to donate items especially for people who don’t have access to a kitchen. And our community delivered! At our March Donation Drive-Thru, more than 3,600kgs of food was donated across our 6 branches. This included ring-pull tins of food (i.e. spaghetti, tuna soup and more), muesli/protein bars, Up’n’Go’s and flavoured milk. Thank you for your donations especially Times One Telstra stores and our friends at Skål International Perth..You have helped us to provide essential food items to West Aussies who need it. Page 4
Our volunteers are teariffic Thank you to our hundreds of regular and corporate volunteers who are helping us to end hunger in Western Australia. While individual contributions vary, the collective impact that our volunteers make at Foodbank WA is enormous. We think you are eggcellent! Meet our Golden Girls! The Golden Girls are a group of friends from the gym that volunteer together in our community kitchen with Chef Grant. “Our group is called the Golden Girls. We started volunteering once a month in the kitchen, but we were so good that we ended up coming in once a fortnight! We enjoy the company, the laughs and the challenges of the meal. You’re exhausted at the end of the day, but you leave knowing you’ve done some good.” Food donations make us Broc N’Roll We rely on food donations from growers, producers, supermarkets and community groups so we can distribute it through our charity partners to West Aussies who need it. A lot of the time it also saves it from landfill so it’s a double win! Thank you to some of our recent donations. Delivering fresh fruit to our kids Our Perth Airport School Fruit van delivers free fruit to over 75 schools each week so kids can enjoy fresh fruit throughout the week. Last year we delivered over 150,000 pieces of fruit! Thanks to the many people who make this a reality for West Aussie kids. Local growers donate the food, our amazing volunteers pack the boxes each week and drivers who deliver the fruit to the schools. Thank you also to Perth Airport and Stan Perron Charitable Foundation for supporting the program and helping keep tummies nice and full. Rio Tinto gives 110,000+ meals Rio Tinto gave a generous donation raised through the corporate golf day and trivia night. This is more than 110,000 meals for West Aussies who need it. Their projects team, showing off their amazing project management skills, packed a record-breaking 13 pallets of hampers and 3 large crates filled with breakfast packs in just 1 day! Thanks Rio Tinto we think you are mint! AIM WA continues training partnership with Foodbank WA We are incredibly grapeful to the Australian Institute of Management in Western Australia (AIM WA) who have continued their training partnership with Foodbank WA. Meal planning on a budget It doesn’t have to be hard to prepare healthy nutritious meals on a budget. Try these 5 tips for a nutritious and enjoyable meal planning and preparation experience. 1. Cook up a storm with friends or family members, or cook in bulk and swap leftovers with a friend. You can then store a good variety of healthy frozen meals. Did you know that most purchased frozen meals are high in salt and low in vegetables? 2. Always have a packet of frozen veggies in your freezer. They are already prepared, easy to portion and can help to reduce food waste. Add them to eggs to make a delicious frittata, mix them with rice to make a stir-fry, or add them to your plate once your meat is cooked. 3. Plan your meals ahead of time to reduce food waste and increase motivation levels. 4. Eating toast for dinner because you can’t be bothered? Add a poached egg and smashed peas or avocado on top, or add some baked beans and fried up tomatoes and mushrooms to make it tastier and healthier! 5. Use a sandwich press as your main cooking appliance. You can easily cook chicken kebabs, a salmon fillet or marinated chicken breast on it. So easy to clean and cooks on both sides at once – quick AND healthy! Try our great recipe Butter-less Chicken Serve with cooked brown or basmati Ingredients Equipment rice and fresh coriander 1 brown onion Knife Spray oil Chopping boards 2 garlic cloves Frypan 1 broccoli Cup measures 1 red capsicum Spoon measures 1 cup frozen peas Can opener 2 chicken breasts (500g) Large bowl 2 teaspoons garam masala Small bowl 2 teaspoons chicken stock powder 2 tablespoons tomato paste Spoon 1 tablespoon cornflour 1 cup water 375mL can light evaporated milk 1 cup reduced fat Greek yoghurt How to make it 1.
