The total solar eclipse 2019 in Chile is a very special occasion and to
make the most out of it for our visitors from all over the world, we have
prepared this extensive journey of exploration of the Altiplano, the desert
and the skies of Atacama. The adventure includes also one guided visit to
the VLT Paranal Observatory.
San Pedro de Atacama in the province of Antofagasta is where our trip
begins with a stay of 4 days. We will discover the terrestrial and celestial
wonders of this privileged place like the Altiplanic lagoons, the Geyser
and the most important archaeological and geological sites of the Area.
The program includes a night of introduction to the skies of Atacama at
the Space Observatory. The participants have the possibility to register
for additional nights of observation in our tours “Astronomico traditional” and “Astronomico Spe-
cial”, with limited quotas.
The VLT Paranal Observatory is the second leg of our adventure. We ha-
ve booked for our visitor a guided tour inside the installations of this
technical wonder. We will have the opportunity to learn what it does and
how it works. The VLT Paranal Observatory is operated by ESO ( Euro-
pean Southern Observatory ) and it´s the most advanced visible light ast-
ronomical Observatory in the world.
Choros Bajos Base Camp near the city of La Serena in the province of Co-
quimbo is the third leg in our Atacama adventure, this will be our place
for the coming days. We are already in the area of totality for the solar
eclipse and the date is getting closer . In this area we will discover the
charms that nature offers us, visiting the National Reserve Penguin of
Humboldt and the coastal area Chañaral de Aceituno.
The total solar eclipse at the 2nd of July is the big event, and at 11
o’clock in the morning we will be in our strategic point of observation,
one of the 8 localities in the province of Coquimbo where the eclipse will
not only be seen in total form but in its longest length of time.

Start date and place: Monday, June 24 2019 in Calama, San Pedro de Atacama.
End date and place: Wednesday, July 3 2019 in Copiapo.
Duration: 10 Days.
Day 1: Monday, June 24 2019: Arrival to Calama – Transfer to San Pedro de Atacama.
Shared transfer from Calama airport to your hotel or camping in San Pedro de Atacama and check
in. In the evening, astronomical tour at the Space Observatory with a talk of orientation to the sky of
Atacama and observation of the sky with expert guides.
Transfer and tour: Shared with other tourists.
Accommodation: Hotel, hostel or camping, according to the chosen rate.
Meals: No meals included.
Day 2: Tuesday, June 25 2019: San Pedro de Atacama – Rainbow Valley.
Half day tour to the Rainbow Valley to discover the petroglyphs of Hierbas Buenas and the geologi-
cal wonders of the Atacama desert and Domeyco range. Return to San Pedro de Atacama at 13.00. In
the afternoon, excursion to the Moon Valley, ascension to the dunes and sunset in the desert.

Day 3: Wednesday, June 26 2019: San Pedro de Atacama – Puritama hot springs – Pukara de
Quitor – Tulor
In the morning, tour to Puritama hot springs. The waters of Puritama, warm, regenerating and revi-
talizing, flow from the depths of the Cordillera of the Andes a few kilometers from San Pedro de
Atacama. Puritama, which means “hot water”, is located on the Andes plateau at 3500 meters above
sea level. These hot springs are considered among the most beautiful in Chile. After taking a bath,
there will be time to relax and walk along the canyon before returning to San Pedro (return at
around 1pm). In the afternoon, archaeological tour visiting Pukara de Quitor and Aldea de Tulor. The
Pucará de Quitor is a pre-Inca fortress located 3 km north of San Pedro de Atacama, from the 12th
century. It is made of stones that climb a hill as a fortress with a perimeter defensive wall, it is a Chi-
lean national monument. The Tulor Village is one of the oldest sedentary archaeological sites in
northern Chile, located about 7.7 km southwest of San Pedro de Atacama, between the emblematic
Cordillera de la Sal and the sand dunes that evidence the progressive drying of this environment.
The first remains were found in 1956 by the Jesuit Father Gustavo Le Paige.

Day 4: Thursday, June 27 2019: San Pedro de Atacama – Toconao – Chaxa Lagoon – Miscanti –
San Pedro de Atacama.
Full day tour to the highlands and Atacama salt flat. Today we enjoy a full day of traveling across the
desert and the Altiplano. We drive south along the salt flat to the Aymará village of Toconao with its
local cacti and stone handcrafts. After this we enter the Atacama salt flat and stop at the Chaxa
Lagoon, one of the world’s best places to see flamingos nesting. From there we start driving up to-
wards the Altiplano, where we experience a complete change of landscape. Our target destination
is the protected Miscanti area, a region marked by mountain lagoons, volcanoes and a very rich local
flora and fauna. In the evening we drive back to San Pedro, arriving by 5pm.

Day 5: Friday, June 28 2019: San Pedro de Atacama – Tatio Geyser – Chiu Chiu Village – Antofa-
gasta
We get up very early (at around 4am) for a two-hour drive to the geysers of El Tatio. We arrive in time
to enjoy the view of the steaming fumaroles and the thermal activity against the extraordinary sunri-
se of the Atacama Desert. Your early morning wake-up will be rewarded with a perfect crystalline
clear sky and a landscape of unforgettable beautiful colors and contrasts. We enjoy a good breakfast
before resuming our journey towards Chiu-Chiu village, where we will stop for lunch (not included)
Visit of the Chiu Chiu church, the oldest in Chile, built in the 17th century. It is entirely made in adobe
and cacti wood. In the afternoon, transfer to Antofagasta, visiting on the way the cemetery of the sal-
tpeter mine Pampa Unión.

Day 6: Saturday, June 29 2019: Antofagasta – Paranal Observatory – Taltal
Departure 11 am to the Paranal Observatory (130 kms) Box lunch on the way. Visit of the Paranal Ob-
servatory and the famous VLT telescope (very Large Telescope) Paranal Observatory is an astrono-
mical observatory operated by the European Southern Observatory (ESO); it is located in the Ataca-
ma Desert of northern Chile on Cerro Paranal at 2,635 m (8,645 ft) altitude, 120 km (70 mi) south of
Antofagasta. By total light-collecting area, it is the largest optical-infrared observatory in the
Southern Hemisphere; worldwide, it is second to the Mauna Kea Observatory on Hawaii. The visit
begins at 14.00 and ends at 16.00. After Paranal visit, 2-hour transfer to the hotel in Taltal.

Day 7: Sunday, June 30 2019: Taltal – Choros Bajos Base Camp
Start 9 am, full day transfer from Taltal to Choros Bajos camp, located only 70 km from La Serena
town. Lunch (not included) in restaurant in Vallenar. Taltal – Choros Bajos Camp 670 km approxi-
mately 8 hours drive plus one hour stop for lunch.

Accommodation: In double matrimonial room, quadruple room or tent, according to the chosen
rate for Punta de Choros.
Meals: Breakfast, dinner.
Day 8: Monday, July 1 2019: Choros Bajos Base Camp – Caleta Chañaral – Choros Bajos Base
Camp
Full day tour along the Chilean coast and visit Caleta Chañaral de Aceituno, at the Pacific Ocean,
part of the National Park Pinguino de Humboldt. Return to Base camp at 5 pm. (120 km roundtrip).
At night: Transfer to Punta Colorada, 40 km from the base camp, to observe the Atacama sky, naked
eye, with a local astro guide.
Transfer and tour: Shared with other tourists.
Accommodation: In double matrimonial room, quadruple room or tent, according to the chosen
rate for Punta de Choros.
Meals: Breakfast and dinner in dinner room. Box lunch underway.
Day 9: Tuesday, July 2 2019: Choros Bajos Base Camp – Almirante Latorre Area – Choros Bajos
Base Camp.
Day of observation of the solar eclipse in the nearest of base camp. Total Solar Eclipse at around
16.38 hrs. We leave at 8 am from our base camp to Almirante Latorre, one of the 8 sites in the Coqui-
mbo region where the total eclipse will be seen in full (2 minutes and 35 seconds). Arrival to Almi-
rante Latorre area estimated at 10.00 am. We will provide comfortable mess tent, tables and seats
to wait for the eclipse. A light lunch, snacks and hot /cold and drinks will be available for our guests
at no extra cost. Drive back to base camp at the end of the eclipse. (170 kms. Round trip).
Celebration and Farewell dinner.

Day 10: Wednesday, July 3 2019: Choros Bajos Base Camp – Copiapo – Santiago.
Transfer to bus terminal or airport in Copiapo (350 km, 4-hour drive) to continue to Santiago - Chile.
Important notice: Arrival to Copiapo airport / Bahia Inglesa is scheduled around 2 pm and the bus
will stop in the following places:

Your hotel in Caldera, Bahia Inglesa and Copiapo.

the Internet to be less expensive than those that we are able to provide for you. However, we advise
you with pleasure the flights and we do not take any commission.

Terms of Payment
To confirm your booking we request a deposit of 30% of the total price by bank transfer or by credit
card. The balance of your trip is due at the latest 45 days before departure.
Cancellation conditions
All cancellations must make the subject of an email sent to the Travel 21 Online. The amount of
cancellation costs varies according to the moment when the cancellation occurs:
All cancelations have a penalty 10% of the cost of the trip.
Between 45 and 30 days prior to departure: 60% of the land cost will be refunded.
Between 29 and 15 days of departure: 45% of the land cost will be refunded.
Cancellation 14 days or less prior to departure – no refunds.
Reimbursement Terms
No reimbursement is provided if, for any reason, a participant renounces the completion of the pro-
gram after departure, or if the weather conditions, or other factors, make it impossible to achieve
the objectives. In the event that a participant needs help, or leave the program before completion,
for any reason, the participant will be responsible for all extra costs. Travel 21 Online and the invol-
ved service providers do not assume any costs for the delay, modification of the program or the
cancellation of the trip in case of adverse weather conditions, strikes, robberies, natural disasters,
riots, acts of terrorism, wars, restrictions or government regulations, failure to comply with pre-
established timetables by means of transport on which Travel 21 Online has no control.

Weather conditions:
In June – July it is winter time in Chile. In San Pedro de Atacama the temperatures are around 18 –
25 °C by midday, at night, 0 °C is common but we can also expect -10 °C. During the day, the sky is
mostly sunny, clear and deep blue.
In the area of La Serena temperatures will be rather low, with 0°C early in the morning and 15°C to
20°C around 1 – 2 pm. Warm clothing and wind stopper jacket are recommended.
Difficulty:
Easy tour, not physical effort involved.
San Pedro de Atacama is located at 2400 meters over sea level, (7874ft). This is an elevation that
most of the people would stand without any health issues. The day tour around San Pedro will
gradually bring you over 3000 and 4000 meters (9842ft to 13123ft). The stay at those elevations will
be short and most tourist won’t experience any kind of discomfort. The fact of coming back every
day to spend the night at a lower elevation ensures an optimal acclimatization. All tours, in San
Pedro de Atacama, Paranal and La Serena surroundings don’t require any physical effort.
