Sharing Our Wealth--Food Insecurity in Johnson County
Sarah Witry, Visiting Assistant Professor, University of Iowa School of Social Work
Thursday, April 22, 1:00 p.m. via Zoom

More than 19,000 people in Johnson County were food insecure in
2017. Nationwide, food insecurity is on the rise amidst soaring
unemployment caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. This presentation
will discuss the prevalence of food insecurity in Johnson County, the
causes and impact of food insecurity, and solutions.

Sarah Witry is a University of Iowa alum who has spent the past
decade working in anti-poverty and food insecurity services. Her
previous role was Director of Services at CommUnity, where she
oversaw the Crisis Intervention and Food Bank departments and led
                                        COVID-19 initiatives, including a collaborative county-wide food
                                        delivery program.

Greetings from the UIRA President, 4/2021

Early spring is surely one of my favorite times of the year. I enjoy noticing the little buds on
trees and shrubs begin to plump up getting ready to bloom. The emergence of leaves, first as a
little green fuzz seen on the trees, to the full opening of leaves is a wonder to behold. In just a
few weeks we will be in full bloom. What an amazing time of rebirth and growth. It has been a
long, hard year since lockdown a little over a year ago. Now we too can begin to imagine rebirth
and growth as we are vaccinated and begin to venture out to socialize and connect in person
with friends and family. It has been a long time coming.

UIRA continues to work for you, promoting ways to donate to our food insecurity agencies here
in Johnson County, connecting you with the UI Center for Advancement to add to our
scholarship fund, and providing exciting and innovative programming. Our ‘Share the Wealth’
campaign agency for April is Table to Table (T2T). I know many of you are familiar with the
good work they do, so let’s throw T2T a little support by donating generously. In addition,
please be sure to read about upcoming programs in the newsletter including a program on food
insecurity by Sarah Witry and a program by popular UI faculty member David Gould.

In addition to developing our outstanding array of programs, the program committee is putting
together a membership survey for distribution later this year. We want to know your feelings
about returning to in-person programming for the coming year and ideas about programs for
next year. Be on the lookout for this survey as we plan to move into next year with what we
hope will be fewer constraints due to COVID.

And finally, mark your calendar for the UIRA annual meeting on Thursday, June 10, from
10:30 a.m. – noon. The UIRA board and program committee are planning a Zoom meeting to
introduce our new officers and board members, announce our scholarship recipients, celebrate
our award winners and photo contest winners, and review our accomplishments in this
unprecedented time of COVID. Please plan to join us.

           ~ Sam Cochran

Share the Wealth Campaign to Fight Food Insecurity

Each month as part of UIRA's Share the Wealth campaign, we will feature or "sponsor" a local agency that
is fighting hunger and food insecurity with the hope that you will make a financial contribution to each one
of them. Small gifts can have an impact! This month we are featuring Table to Table.

As part of the campaign, our April 22 program Sharing Our Wealth--Food Insecurity in Johnson County
presented by Sarah Witry, LMSW, will focus on the prevalence of food insecurity in Johnson County, the
causes and impact of food insecurity, and solutions.

Table to Table (T2T) builds connections between abundance
and hunger through food rescue. Volunteers recover excess
food from grocery stores, restaurants, farms, and food
processors, then deliver this food immediately to nonprofit
hunger-relief partners. This past year, T2T delivered 2.5
million pounds at no cost to agency partners. Financial
donations help keep our services free for partners. T2T knows
how to make the most of a dollar, $25 rescues more than 150
pounds of good food! You can make a gift at
                                                https://table2table.org/donation/.

T2T deliveries account for more than half the food available to our neighbors at Johnson County’s food
pantries and meal sites. They also work closely with shelters, youth, and senior programs to meet their
unique needs. To increase access to nutritious foods, the recovery efforts prioritize collection of fruits and
veggies, protein, and dairy to increase access to well-rounded meals.

T2T increased food collection to meet the growing needs during the pandemic crisis. They delivered 9,000
restaurant-prepared meals for Food with Love; launched an initiative to collect produce from local farms
and gardeners; and worked with food pantry partners to set up parking lot distributions of USDA fresh food
boxes.

You can help this unique organization continue to grow. Join
the team on a food rescue route to harvest produce or sign up
to donate from your own garden! Learn more about our

Tim Barrett will share two of the bright spots in his career that occurred
after he arrived at the University of Iowa Center for the Book in 1986. In
the first, he will describe how his team made the paper that now sits
beneath the Charters of Freedom – our Declaration of Independence, the
Bill of Rights, and the Constitution – which reside in the National Archives
Rotunda (Washington, D.C.). In his second example, Professor Barrett will
share how his research helped reveal some of the secrets behind the
surprising longevity and aesthetic appeal of 15th century European paper.
Tim Barrett
Today, he is engaged in an end-of-career quest to help raise $1.75M in10 months for the UI Center for the
Book.

                                     Photo Contest Winners

One of the highlights of the annual business meeting and luncheon is seeing some of the photos taken by
UIRA members. Because we will not have that annual meeting in person again this year, you can see the
winners in this and the May issues of the Gray Hawk. There were not as many submissions this year as in
the past, so the judges picked only first- and second-place photos.

Hills Bank & Trust again was the prize sponsor. Once again, Penni Ryan coordinated the contest, and Larry
Mendenhall and Tim Schoon were the photo judges. Here are the winners for the three categories and a few
of the photos as well as the photo judges’ comments. All of the photos will be on the UIRA Shutterfly site,
https://uira.shutterfly.com/.

International:
First Place: John Donelson: Minnewanka
Lake, Banff, Canada. We liked this because
of the strong line leading the viewer’s eye
into the picture and the blue color palette of
the image.
Second Place: Jan Lawler: Sunset View.

                                                   International 1st place, John Donelson

USA:
First Place: John Moyers: Egret.
Second Place: KE Renquist: Osprey Nest. The nest is interesting, but we also loved the texture in the
wall behind the nest and the general composition of the frame.

 USA 2nd place, KE Renquist

Iowa:
First Place: Linda Muston: October Surprise. We loved the
small details in this photo. Iowa doesn’t have dramatic
landscapes, so being able to see the beauty in small things is a
definite plus. The early snow gives a nice contrast to the fall
colors, and we thought this worked well as a photo.
Second Place: Diana Cox: Goodness How Delicious.

                                                                   Iowa 1st place, Linda Muston

                              UIRA Special Interest Groups
The Gray Hawk Writers have been meeting fortnightly since April 1999 and continue to meet every two
weeks via Zoom. We read aloud what we have written, encourage one another, and offer friendly critique.
In 2014 we published an anthology, Yesterdays. Our storytelling and writing styles are quite diverse; there
are many pathways that can be followed when writing. Visit us as a guest; you may decide you would like
to join the group. Everyone has a story to tell. Email the chair of the group Doug Paul
