The hotel is meant to attract many more out-of-state visitors looking to experience the popular city of Charlotte, North Carolina and its surrounding regions. Also, the upcoming season of Scarowinds (the horror version of Carowinds) will feature two new scare areas, which are usually haunted houses filled with jumpscares. In addition to the many other changes, Carowinds will also add ice skating to its winter and Christmas event. Carowinds has introduced a large amount of new content coming that will surely keep the park fresh.

Washington By: Lily Margeson Usually, when history teachers mention Washington, they are referring to the renowned President and General George Washington, but Washington is a name belonging to many more significant historical figures, including Booker Taliaferro Washington, founder of the Tuskegee Institute. Born at the peak of pre-Civil War tension in western Virginia, it was clear that Washington would have to work for every scrap of influence he would come to possess. His mother was a slave for a small farm owner, James Burroughs, but transitioned to working in salt mines with her children after gaining her freedom. When Washington turned 16, he was able to attend college at the Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute, whose principal was a commander of Black troops in the Civil War. Feeling pressured by the prestige of his grammar school, Taliaferro gave himself the surname Washington and began to envelop himself in a passion for public speaking. After college, he spent two years attending school at Wayland University before being hired as a teacher at his alma mater. 6 Opinions 6 Secondary education: Worth the stress? By: Priscilla Vanartsdalen “What do you want to do after high school?” Receiving this question is a common occurrence for most high school students. People want to know where these students are planning to go to college, what they want to major in or what career they are hoping to pursue. However, what many do not consider is that a lot of students simply do not know the answers to those questions. For many kids, it is those very questions that have them constantly worrying about what their futures may hold. Entering high school for the first time as a fourteen- or fifteen-year-old kid can be a thrilling and nerve-wracking experience. Students are suddenly faced with an entirely new workload and set of responsibilities. Within those four years of high school, these students will change and develop from children into young adults and functioning members of society. However, it is what comes after Photo courtesy of WalletHacks high school that is the biggest change these students will face. From the moment they enter kindergarten, most students are taught that college comes after school. They attend school for Photo courtesy of Jordyn John thirteen years and work hard just so that they can be good enough to be accepted into yet another school following that. They stress about which major and school is right for them and if they will even be able to afford this next step in their lives. They do all of this because they are engrained with the idea that without a degree, they will never succeed in life. However, I think the reality is just the opposite. I just don’t believe students in school are properly taught the options and opportunities that they have once they graduate from high school. The idea that college or secondary education is the only option to pursue after high school is no longer realistic in this day and age. I think it is time to diminish the stereotype that students who choose alternative paths after high school are failures or not as worthy of substantial careers because that is just not the case! For some students, college at eighteen years old just is not something within reach, whether it be because of their grades or financial status. Student loans will only lead to a lifetime of debt and according to The Washington Post, only 27 percent of college graduates actually had a job related to their major in 2010. In my opinion, many eighteen year olds are just not ready to choose the path that they are expected to take for the rest of their lives. Of course, they can always go back to school for a different major if they change their minds later and pay off even more loans, but I do not think that is realistic either. These kids have been sheltered their entire lives and are then pushed into the real world. People tend to forget that these students are still, in fact, just kids. I think graduates should be given more time and preparation to make the decisions that will affect them for the many years to come. They should be shown every single option that they have after high school without dealing with any shame or discouragement for what they decide to choose, whether that be attending a college or not. By: Jordyn John Photo courtesy of Priscilla Vanartsdalen According to Select USA, the United States media and entertainment industry is the largest in the world, taking up a third of the entire global industry. With America’s plethora of YouTubers, actors and social media influencers, the statistic is not hard to believe. Every day, we are immersed in the entertainment industry, even if we are not a direct part of it. Whether it be through Instagram, Twitter or Snapchat, we spend most of our lives as audience members, watching entertainers and observing their every action. Of course, this constant observation leads to things like clothing trends and memes, but it can also largely influence the mindset of anybody. As we advance in technology, we become more and more connected with one another. This hyperconnectivity has slowly turned us into what I like to call a “performance-based generation.” All day, we sit back and watch other people performing their lives in front of us. We watch already famous celebrities cry their way through acceptance speeches; we watch our friends as they travel to amazing places without us; we watch the likes and comments rack up and eventually; we want some of it for ourselves. What do we do next? We turn to the Internet for love, support and validation. We perform every aspect of our lives (the good and the bad) in hopes that somebody will come along and leave a like or a comment and make us feel better about ourselves. If anything, I do not want to seem like I am bashing the Internet. I am addicted to it, just like everyone else my age. I just think that it is really fascinating to observe how we interact with the Internet like it is one of our friends or even a therapist. In the end, though, I do not think that we chose to live the way that we do. Our relationship with the Internet was taught, or it was cultivated in response to a group that demanded to perform. So, in our own, unique way, we are all simultaneously performers and audience members. There is not much that we can do to change who we have become as a generation, only assess and understand why we are doing what we are doing (or posting what we are posting). Just know that though it may feel like it, you do not have to perform your entire life if you do not want Photo courtesy of Jordyn John to. The Internet can be either a very beautiful or very painful place, and you play a large part in which one it is.

Young kids and teens who suffer from depression and/or anxiety may be treated with medications to control or settle their minds so they may function properly. However, some parents have reservations about giving these medications to their children. Some of these prescriptions can come with adverse side effects such as a decreased appetite, headaches, increased anxiety, mood swings and weight gain or loss. Due to these potential effects, some parents and doctors are deciding against the use of medications as a first option to treat children. Luckily, there are other alternatives for these children that may have amazing benefits. Children who suffer from depression and anxiety can greatly benefit from massage therapy. Massages allow active minds and imaginations the time to relax and be at peace for a little while. Regular visits allow children to feel better within and about themselves. The summer box office certainly reflected this, raking in over $3.5 billion across the board. With so many movies Eighth Grade, Mamma Mia! Megan Cessna, a senior at Fort Mill High School, was one of many who enjoyed Mamma Mia! “The movie was so cute and the songs were so catchy,” she says. Though the summer of 2018 was filled with blockbuster sequels, there are a few smaller indie movies worth seeing as well, and Sorry To Bother You definitely makes the cut. The film stars LaKeith Stanfield and follows his character, Cassius, as his once dull world is turned upside down when he discovers a magic key to success. As the story goes on, however, the comedy shifts into science fiction as Cassius discovers more and more about what he got himself into. Independent production company A24 started off the summer strong with Hereditary, a terrifying horror film that will surely keep an audience up at night. The movie tells the story of a family that uncovers previously hidden dark secrets when a grandmother passes away. Filled with plot twists and supernatural themes, Hereditary is not for the faint of heart. A24 also ended the summer on a great note with Eighth Grade, which was written and directed by acclaimed comedian Bo Burnham. Though Eighth Grade was Burnham’s directorial debut, it is certainly not amateur work and scored an astonishing 98% on Rotten Tomatoes. The film tells the story of a teenager named Kayla as she makes her way through her last week of middle school. Eighth Grade is about as real as it gets, perfectly capturing what it is like to be an awkward, internet-addicted teenager with anxiety. Though all of these films were considered “summer” movies, there is still plenty of time to see them in theaters. Check local theater times in Fort Mill and see these films before they are gone!
