Film, Television & Theatre June 2018 Film EVERYBODY’S TALKING ABOUT JAMIE: THE FILM – Announcement Warp Films and Film4 are adapting hit musical 'Everybody’s Talking About Jamie'. Filming is being lined up for Spring 2019 on location and at studios in Sheffield. The original creative team from the musical – director Jonathan Butterell, who was born and raised in Sheffield; writer Tom McRae; and composer Dan Gillespie-Sells – will reunite for the film. The Musical has also had its run at the Apollo Theatre extended until April 2019, whilst a live broadcast of the show will play in 500 cinema screens across the country on July 5 th. EVERYBODY’S TALKING ABOUT JAMIE THE YELLOW BIRDS – US Release (15th June) Two young soldiers navigate the terrors of the Iraq war under the command of their troubled Sergeant, all the while troubled by promises made to their families. Starring Alden Ehrenreich and Jennifer Anniston. Based on the novel by Kevin Powers. Television POLDARK SERIES 2: BBC1 – 10th June at 9pm Poldark returns to BBC1 on 10th June at 9pm on BBC1 for a fourth series, written and executive produced by Debbie Horsfield. OUR GIRL SERIES 3, Part 2: BBC One, Tuesday 5th June at 9pm Created and written by Tony Grounds. This series sees the return of Corporal Georgie Lane (Michelle Keegan), who throws herself into her work training Nigerian forces in the fight against Boko Haram, only to find herself pitched headlong into danger. Episodes 1 (5th June) and 2 (12th June) are directed by Rob Evans. OUR GIRL A VERY ENGLISH SCANDAL Finale on BBC One 3rd June at 9pm The final episode of this three-part drama featuring one of the biggest scandals in British politics, Liberal leader Jeremy Thorpe (Hugh Grant) and his former lover Norman Scott (Ben Whishaw). Written and Executive Produced by Russell T Davies and directed by Stephen Frears. A VERY ENGLISH SCANDAL
ACKLEY BRIDGE SERIES 2: Channel 4 – 5th June at 8pm The critically acclaimed TV drama returns for a second season. Executive produced, co-created and episodes by Ayub Khan Din. HETTY FEATHER 4: CBBC – continues Helen Blakeman’s series, adapted from Dame Jacqueline Wilson’s novel, has returned for a fourth series. Episode 5 is written by Gareth Sergeant (4th June). HETTY FEATHER London Theatre THE LIEUTENANT OF INISHMORE: Noel Coward Theatre, 23rd June – 8th September Lynette Linton is the Associate Director on Michael Grandage’s revival of Martin McDonagh’s critically acclaimed play. Aidan Turner plays Mad Padraic, a terrorist deemed too violent to be a member of the IRA, in this hilarious, acute observation of violence in contemporary culture. THE LIEUTENANT OF INISHMORE EFFIGIES OF WICKEDNESS: The Gate Theatre – Extended until 9th June In this ground breaking collaboration, the Gate Theatre and English National Opera present a cabaret of riotous, witty, and shockingly prophetic songs banned by the Nazis in the 1930s. Directed by Ellen McDougall. EFFIGIES OF WICKEDNESS THE END OF HISTORY: St Giles-in-the-Fields/Soho Theatre – Runs 5th to 23rd June A specially created site-specific new show at St Giles-in-the- Fields. What happens when two totally different Londoners find themselves face to face on the worst day of their lives? The End of History is a moving and funny site-responsive play with music which uses a chance encounter to explore the impact of gentrification on two radically different individuals. Paul is a gay party boy working in property, Wendy works in the charity sector. They belong to two different London’s but have one thing in common; they’re both alone in the city. Written by Marcelo Dos Santos, Sound by Ed Lewis. THE END OF HISTORY
TRANSLATIONS: National Theatre, Olivier – Continues Brian Friel’s modern classic is a powerful account of nationhood, which sees the turbulent relationship between England and Ireland play out in one quiet community. Owen returns to rural Donegal from Dublin. With him are two British army officers, their ambition is to create a map of the area, replacing the Gaelic names with English. It is an administrative act with radical consequences. THE GREATEST WEALTH ACIS AND GALATEA: English National Opera - 9th – 16th June For the very first time, English National Opera will perform Handel’s first dramatic work written in English, Acis and Galatea, based on John Gay’s text after an episode from Ovid’s Metamorphoses. Phil Ormrod’s latest work is about pride, what men imagine makes them strong, and about searching for a future in the dying heart of England. ISAAC CAME HOME FROM THE MOUNTAIN NOT TALKING: Arcola Theatre, 25th April – 2nd June The never-before-seen first play by Olivier award-winning writer Mike Bartlett. This gripping and lyrical drama blasts open cultures of silence with small acts of protest, Chopin and occasional dancing to Westlife. NOT TALKING SUGAR BABY: Soho Theatre, 22nd May - 2nd June A one man-comedy from critically acclaimed Alan Harris, SUGAR BABY explores the chaotic – and occasionally farcical – life of a small-time drug dealer in Cardiff. Everything wants something from Alex, but all Alex wants is to survive. SUGAR BABY THE BIOGRAPH GIRL: Finborough Theatre, 22nd May – 2nd June The first professional UK production since its 1980 premiere, THE BIOGRAPH GIRL is a love letter to the stardust and scandals of the silent movie era. Featuring music from HALF A SIXPENCE composer David Heneker. THE BIOGRAPH GIRL SHEBEEN: Theatre Royal Stratford East, 20th June – 7th July Specially commissioned by Nottingham Playhouse, SHEBEEN invites you to a party you never knew existed. This world premiere by Alfred Fagon-winning Mufaro Makubika, shines a light on a community under siege and the sacrifices made for love. Directed by Matthew Xia. UK Theatre RANDOM/GENERATIONS: Minerva Theatre, 4th May – 2nd June Fierce, warm and funny, Debbie Tucker Green’s two short and haunting dramas examine love, life and loss through the lives of two families on two continents. RANDOM/GENERATIONS LOVE ON THE LINKS: Salisbury Playhouse – Runs to Saturday 23rd June In the rarefied surroundings of Wood Hills Golf Club in deepest Surrey all is very genteel. The Oldest Member is having a snooze in the corner while the barman is pouring another White Horse and Malvern at the ‘19th Hole’. It’s soon time, however, for The Oldest Member to stir in his armchair and regale us with stories of seduction, canoodling and thwarted love, with the help of some biffo club members, not to mention the ever graceful Daphne Cartwright and the dashing Jack Ramage. BING LIVE SHOW: UK Tour – begins 20th June Bing and his friends are going on tour in the first ever BING stage show. Kicking off in St Albans at the Alban Arena, BING LIVE! will visit 50 venues over 25 weeks. BING is based on the books written and illustrated by Ted Dewan. BING LIVE SKIN A CAT UK Tour begins in June Isley Lynn’s hit play starts its UK Tour this month. After opening at the Wolsey Theatre for the Pulse Festival on June 3rd, it will move to Wolverhampton and Oxford. It’ll be at the Edinburgh Fringe throughout August, at the Assembly Rooms. SKIN A CAT THE LIGHT PRINCESS: Cardogan Hall – 1st July Tori Amos and Samuel Adamson’s critically acclaimed musical arrives at Cadogan Hall starring musical theatre powerhouses Rosalie Craig and Hadley Fraser in this fairy-tale about grief, rebellion and the power of love. THE LIGHT PRINCESS RICHARD III: Shakespeare’s Rose Theatre, York – Previews from 29th June One of two plays directed by Lindsay Posner as part of Shakespeare’s Rose Theatre’s upcoming season. This classic Shakespearean work is of particular significance to the historic city of York whilst Shakespeare’s Richard III has contributed to the real King’s reputation as one of the most colourful villains in British history. Music composed by Olly Fox. RICHARD III ROMEO AND JULIET: Shakespeare’s Rose Theatre, York – Previews from 25th June Director Lindsay Posner brings us this production of the most famous love story ever written - a tale of young love, grand passion, feuding families, street violence and the cruelties of fate. Music composed by Olly Fox. ROMEO AND JULIET ART: UK & Ireland Tour – Ends its run on 9th June, Canterbury Marlowe Theatre. Nigel Havers, Denis Lawson and Stephen Tompkinson star in the UK and Ireland Tour of Yasmina Reza’s multi award-winning comedy. Based on the original production by Matthew Warchus, ART will be directed by Ellie Jones. When Serge buys a large, expensive, completely white painting, his friend Marc is horrified and leads to a strained debate about what constitutes art. Caught in the middle, Yvan tries to calm them but what effect does this have on their friendship. ART
THE COUNTRY WIFE: Chichester Festival Theatre – Preview from 8th June Widely regarded as one of the filthiest and funniest plays ever written, William Wycherley’s The Country Wife has outraged and excited audiences for over 300 years and today still casts a provocative light on sexual mores. Jonathan Munby returns to Chichester following his huge successes directing King Lear (Festival 2017, West End 2018) and First Light (Festival 2016). THE COUNTRY WIFE MOONBIRD: University of Reading - one-off performance on 23rd June The unique Theatre Arts, Education & Deaf Studies (TAEDS) BA for deaf- hearing integrated students will mark its 32-year-history with a performance of Handprint Theatre’s new adaptation of MOONBIRD, based on the book written by Joyce Dunbar and illustrated by Jane Ray. MOONBIRD TRYING IT ON opens at Warwick Arts Centre on June 7th; Birmingham Rep on 12th June Christopher Haydon directs David Elgar’s one-man show, and will be at the RSC, the Royal Court, and the Midlands Arts Centre, Birmingham, in October. TRYING IT ON ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO’S NEST: Sheffield Theatres Crucible Stage, 7th June – 23rd June Award-winning director Javaad Alipoor directs this adaptation of Ken Kesey's classic novel, which inspired the cult film. Rebellion and conformity clash, when McMurphy and his fellow inmates come up against the authoritarian Nurse Ratched, who is not about to give up her regime of discipline and order without a fight. They soon learn what happens to the individual when the institution takes control. ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST DOUBLE BILL: WHERE WE ARE: HOME Manchester, Wed 27 – Thu 28 June Rebekah Harrison’s play THIS IS WHERE WE ARE, produced by her award winning theatre collective Take Back will be performed for two nights only as part of this exciting double bill exploring Manchester and its people. We’re in Piccadilly Gardens, It’s a hot day, People sit, People wait, People walk, People drink lattes, People beg, Children play, They run in and around the fountains. Overseas Theatre TREMOR: 59E59’s Brits Off Broadway festival, New York, runs to 10th June 2018 David Mercatali directs Brad Birch’s play, transferring from Sherman Theatre. ASKING FOR IT WOMAN AND SCARECROW: Irish Repertory Theater, New York, until 24th June Irish Repertory Theatre presents the New York premiere of WOMAN AND SCARECROW by Marina Carr. Woman is dying. Mother to eight children and wife to an unfaithful husband, she is living her final hours with Scarecrow, her alter ego. Together, the women revisit her life with biting humour and brutal honesty. THE DIARY OF MAYNARD PERDU: Wexford Arts Centre, Ireland, 20th – 30th June Written and directed by the award-winning playwright Billy Roche, THE DIARY OF MAYNARD PERDU is set in the fantastic, mirrored, burlesque world of the Spiegeltent where fantasy and delusion reign supreme. Based on the novella by Billy Roche, this one man show takes us on a romantic journey of adventure and intrigue all of which serves to mask the pain and loss that are buried deep within. THE DIARY OF MAYNARD PERDU THE FRUIT TRILOGY: Lucille Lortel Theatre: 2nd – 23rd June Abingdon Theatre Company will conclude its 25th anniversary this summer with a production of Fruit Trilogy, three short plays by The Vagina Monologues Tony Award winner Eve Ensler, who was recently seen Off- Broadway with her solo piece In The Body of the World.
