PROGRAMS AND ACTIVITIES FGP fosters individual artistic growth and brings together people who seek to advance the field of fiber art and enrich the culture of our region with a variety of programs creating a supportive community. Monthly meetings are held from September to May. Check the website, Facebook, and E-Blasts for changes and updates. ANNUAL POTLUCK is a star event bringing the largest group of members together with great food and great bargains. FIBER CONVERSATIONS held in FGP homes provide opportunities for members to meet in small groups to share experiences, solve technical and aesthetic problems, network and at times tour member’s studios. FGP works closely with local organizations, agencies, and schools to promote fiber art, creating new community connections and inspiring a new generation of fiber artists. INTEREST GROUPS: FGP has established groups that are designed to provide mem- bers with a forum to pursue a particular interest within the wide range of fiber art. Groups are informally structured and self-governed, each deciding their focus, activi- ties, locations, and dates. Members are encouraged to form additional groups around their interest. 2019 - 2020 Program SCHEDULE September 10 Tuesday Show, Share & Critique 3:00 - 5:00 Welcome Back Potluck 5:00 Presentation: Jeanne Bieri, FI2019 artist 7:00 Location: CC / Strip District Join us at Contemporary Craft to renew our tradition of the Welcome Back Potluck. Bring a covered dish to share, a friend and stay for our guest speaker’s presentation. Jeanne Bieri is a Fiberart International 2019 artist and a Focus Fiber 2019 First Prize win- ner. She incorporates family and collected textiles into her unique artwork. Her father, a pilot in WWII, brought home army blankets the family used on camping trips. At a reflective point in her career she began mending, piecing and combining the blankets with parts of damaged quilts she collected. The blankets and quilts have stories to tell, many of war, family struggles and life cycles. Jeanne uses chain stitches, as found in Muslim clerical garments in which each stitch is a prayer, as an act of healing. It is her hope that in restructuring and mending these blankets, the horrors of war today can be kept at bay. October 5 Saturday 10:30 - 12:30 Workshop: Mending for Sustainability with Sarah Kate Beaumont Location: CC / Strip District Tuition: $40. Guild Discounts of $5 available. The process of mending personalizes what we own and puts sustainability at our fin- gertips. Bring a piece of clothing that needs to be mended: torn, moth-eaten sweaters, a hem coming unstitched, etc. Participants will be guided through the steps of mend- ing and leave the class with a newly repaired garment! Concerned about the impact of fast-fashion on the environment, the instructor has created a unique wardrobe and has made every stitch she wears without buying a single article of clothing since 2008. See page 8 for registration information. October 17 Thursday Show, Share & Critique 3:00 - 5:00 Presentation: Trunk Show by Denise Roberts, Quilting in Curves 7:00 Location: PCA&M / Shadyside Denise Roberts is an artist whose medium is the quilt. She lives on a 38-acre farm in the mountains of West Virginia with her husband Rick. Inspiration comes from her environment. She says, “I drive on roads that make Italian road racing look easy. Our two lane highways can be very narrow and extremely curvy. I am influenced by these roads and by viewing the continuous curves of the landscape.” Denise hand dyes fabric for her stitched work during the summer months. She is a master of curvilinear piecing; her exquisite compositions are part of three series of works: Mitote, Sisu and Finding Connections. Her work has been in numerous art and textile exhibitions in Europe and the United States. She has won many awards, among them the coveted Japan Prize at Quilt National. In her presentation Denise will take us on her journey as an artist and bring actual work to show and share. —9—
October 19 Saturday 1:00 - 4:00 Workshop: Indigo Dyeing with Shibori Techniques by Amber Coppings Location: CC / Strip District Tuition: $65. Guild Discounts of $15 available. Learn how to use itajime and kumo shibori fabric dyeing techniques to create unique designs on cloth. Shibori refers to Japanese methods of binding cloth to achieve soft, yet geometric designs. Students will leave with a dyed circle-scarf as well as samples of Kona cotton that can be used for future projects. Students will receive a supply list. See page 8 for registration information. November 9 Saturday Presentation: Tapestry Inspirations: The Work of Henry Hallet & David Mooney 1:00 Show, Share & Critique 2:30 - 4:30 Location: PCA&M / Shadyside Join us for an afternoon at Pittsburgh Center for Arts and Media to see the work of two admirable and admired Fiberarts Guild members. Henry Hallet has always been fascinated by the way an image can be built within a wo- ven structure and the way colors can be blended in fiber. His new work in needlework rests on the foundation of 18 years spent weaving tapestry and his love for ancient tapestry and art history. Henry will also discuss the work of his friend David Mooney, who passed away in July of 2019. David was fascinated by old tapestries from an early age. As a college student, he spent many hours in the weaving studio as an observer and helper. Later he became an accomplished tapestry artist but struggled with the frustration of fitting into the art world. He became a sound engineer. After retiring 27 years later, he returned to tapestry. December 7 Saturday 1:00 Fiber Roundtable Location: 6th PC / Squirrel Hill Fiberarts Guild member Delli Speers leads a discussion about materials we collect and how to integrate them into our work as artists who care about reuse and recycling. Please bring samples and examples! January 14 Tuesday Show, Share & Critique 3:00 - 5:00 Presentation: Patricia van Valkenburg: My Journey as an Artist 7:00 Location: PCA&M / Shadyside Patricia van Valkenburg was born in Roosendaal in the southwestern part of The Netherlands. She has always been interested in the beauty of things: nature, fashion, ceramics, and art in general. She likes to draw, paint, knit, felt, and design and make clothes. She considered herself an enthusiastic hobbyist until her teacher at the arts & crafts school she attended signed her up for a national contest for non-professional artists and she—to her great surprise—came in fourth. Patricia will tell us in person what happened after that surprising result. — 10 —

Tina received the 2018 Pennsylvania Governor’s Award for Artist of the Year. February 6 Thursday Show, Share & Critique 3:00 - 5:00 Presentation: Christine Manges, Braided Art Rugs 7:00 Location: PCA&M / Shadyside Christine Manges is a rugmaking artist whose focus is on braiding with wool fabric. Please bring braided rugs from your family with you. Christine will give you information about their techniques and construction. March 21 Saturday 2:00 - 4:00 pm Artists' Talk: Fiberarts Guild Membership Exhibition: For Your Consideration Location: Brewhouse Association / Southside 711 S. 21st St., Pittsburgh PA 15203 Fiberarts Guild Membersip Exhibition artists will discuss their work and what inspires them to communicate through fiber art. The 43-year-old knit- ting extraordinaire has built up an online following by sharing photos of himself visit- ing famous landmarks while wearing handmade sweaters that match the sites.”(Time Magazine). Join us to meet this knitting phenomenon and see his work. May 15 Friday Show, Share & Critique 3:00 - 5:00 Presentation: Merill Comeau, FI2019 Artist 7:00 Location: CC / 5645 Butler Street By deconstructing and reconstructing textiles and altering clothing, Merill Comeau dis- rupts, reorders, and rebuilds real or imagined narratives. Her stories take the shape of installations, garments, and murals that explore common human concerns and create narratives of repair and regeneration. She explores historical and contemporary wom- en’s roles: the toil of the maker, the privilege of the wearer, the job of mothering, how to be a ‘good’ daughter, and societal expectations for sexual and emotional expression. In addition to her solo studio practice, she works with communities to create collabora- tive works of art. Committed to the use of visual expression as storytelling, transmitting knowledge, and teaching values, she facilitates the exploration of individual identity and participants’ commonalities, resulting in site-specific installations and collaborative wall hangings. May 16 Saturday 10:00 - 5:00 Workshop: Attire + Autobiography = Art with Merill Comeau Tuition: TBA. Guild Discounts TBA Location: CC / 5645 Butler Street In this workshop we will mine clothing and apply surface design techniques to visually express our stories: Is a shirt an opportunity for a social justice statement? Do we express our flair by embellishing a dress? Do we highlight relationships by salvaging snippets of worn cloth? We will explore the expressive qualities of mark-making with an emphasis on exploration and play. Participants will be free to work in 2-D or 3-D: works may take the form of altered garments, quilting yardage, and/or wall art. All levels welcome, no previous experience necessary. Supply list will be provided. See page 8 for registration information. — 12 —
May 17 Sunday 11:00 - 2:00 Workshop: Getting to the Finish Line and Beyond with Merill Comeau Tuition: TBA. Guild Discounts TBA Location: CC / 5645 Butler Street Do you have a project that is stuck or challenging you? Could you use some help developing or enhancing your answer to “What kind of art do you do?” In this two part workshop we will help you identify how to progress on a project and help you generate an ‘elevator speech’ for use in your artist statement or when describing your work. Bring in a piece that is unfinished that you would like to jump-start, or that needs final touches and we will explore next steps through positive, constructive feedback. We will also do a group exercise that results in a collection of words and phrases spe- cific to each artwork. Participants, inspired by these words, will draft a short paragraph about their work that they may share with the group to receive immediate feedback. All levels welcome. Supply list will be provided. See page 8 for registration information. PCA&M FALL FIBER ART COURSES The following fiber-related courses from the PCA&M may be of interest to Guild mem- bers.
