Because of the uncertainty we have all been working on our own projects, and of course we have not all been able to be together, with a maximum of 8 allowed at a time in the Centre we have had to work on the ‘first come first served’ system, but somehow that has worked well. Some of our members have once again contributed towards the Fernhurst Christmas cards, which went on sale only just before the second lockdown. However, they have been available online for ‘click and collect’ and seem to be selling well. Even though we have been unable to meet as a group, we are lucky that we can still carry on painting! Many of us have been completing work started in the summer and we will be hoping to put some of this on our website after Christmas. We should be having our Christmas get together on Dec 2 nd, sadly this cannot take place, but we are working on the possibility of having a final meeting the following day on the 3rd at our usual time and will let members know. FERNHURST PRIMARY SCHOOL The children at Fernhurst Primary School have been busy enjoying their learning and we would love to share some of their experiences with you. Years 5 and 6 had an enrichment day involving dressing in role as children during World War 2. They were told about the experience of evacuation, which included learning about the role of a billeting officer and hearing an air raid siren, as well as telling them about Fernhurst Village’s role in the re locating of children from London. Some parents even wrote letters of goodbye for the children to open. There is something very special about entering into the role and immersing yourself in a drama experience. It really brings learning to life and seeing the work that these children have produced, clearly shows the impact of these experiences. The written work that they have produced is wonderful, examples of which can be seen on our Facebook page. All of our children are part of ‘Children’s University’. This is a package we provide which includes a range of opportunities in STEM and outdoor learning. We have been delighted to see how so many of our children are engaging in the opportunities available. Some of our children have been taking part in science lessons with science specialists at ‘Science Whiz’. They have been discovering chemical reactions and considering the science behind these reactions! We are looking forward to our Christmas celebrations. While they will look a little different this year, we are determined that our children will enjoy the festivities. Keep an eye out for changes outside our school as you walk past in December… It was lovely to show prospective parents around the school, in the first of two tours that have been organised for parents of children starting reception in 2021, as well anyone else interested in joining us. Due to the second lockdown, we have rescheduled our November tour. The next dates available are 13 th December and 9th January – please contact the school office on office@fernhirst.w-sussex.sch.uk or 01428 653144 if you would like to book a personalised tour to decide if Fernhurst is the right place for your child(ren). Kind regards, Mrs Jennifer Thornton, Headteacher 2 Fernhurst News December/January 2021
A Christmas present to help beat the Covid “Blues”? This year has been like no other for so many of our clubs and societies in Fernhurst, but tennis, as an outdoor, naturally distanced sport benefitted from an early release from lockdown in mid-May and the Fernhurst Tennis Club experienced a greatly increased level of interest and participation. Our expanded schedule of activities was specifically designed to encourage participation at every level and the new online booking facility through our enhanced website meant much greater usage of our courts. Sadly, Covid is not going away in a hurry and, while tennis has been curtailed in the current lockdown, it is likely to be one of the first activities to be re-opened and should offer an active and social solution to the stay-at-home blues in the new year and beyond. At Fernhurst, we aim to play tennis all year round and taking out a subscription at Christmas should lead to some much needed early fun in 2021. New members of all ages and standards are welcome at Fernhurst Tennis Club. For the new year, we are making an “early bird” membership offer; keeping subscriptions for 2021 membership at 2020 rates for those who join by 31st January. That’s £62 for adults and £130 for families for a whole year. Thereafter, the 2021 subscriptions will increase to £65 for adults and £135 for families. We also offer a very affordable £15 rate for juniors and students. What better value, more enjoyable or healthy Christmas present than a tennis club membership could there be for your parent, child, partner or yourself?! Go to: www.fernhursttennisclub.org.uk to find out more about the Club and join online or contact the Membership Secretary: membership@fernhursttennisclub.org.uk for more details. A key part of the Club’s offer – in addition to free play for members to arrange their own games – is accessible “roll ups”, where members can just turn up and join in. We always try to have a “Games maker” member present to help introduce new members and organise appropriate matching for games. The amount of coaching on offer and the number of matches with other clubs played were both affected in 2020 by Covid restrictions, but these should bounce back next year, assuming a healthier backdrop. We have some exciting plans to expand tournament play; junior activities and build on the very successful “Rusty Racket” programme for less confident players returning to tennis. We are looking forward to the new year and hope that Santa Claus might help us sign a few new members who are looking to play fun, social, or competitive tennis in 2021. FERNHURST GOOD COMPANIONS All our members have now received a copy of the year’s audited accounts, along with short reports from our President, Chairman and Secretary. Members who have comments or questions on the accounts were invited to contact the Secretary. The next Village News will be in February, and we will report there on any possible plans we have for 2021. Please check. Of course, we hope to see all our members very soon! Christmas is coming, so how about a quiz? Below are some school reports of well-known people. Match each report to one of the names below – answers are listed elsewhere in this Village News. (pg. 18) 1. “Tends to set himself very low targets which he then fails to achieve.” 2. “…writes indifferently and knows nothing of grammar” 3. “Hopeless. Rather a clown in class, just wasting other pupils’ time. Certainly on the road to failure.” 4. “Must try to be less emotional in dealings with others.” 5. “Has glaring faults and they have certainly glared at us this term.” 6. "Cannot be trusted to behave - anywhere.” 7. “Thinks HE is running the school and not me. If this persists, one of us must leave. 8. “He will either go to prison or become a millionaire.” 9. “A persistent muddler. Vocabulary negligible…..reminds me of a camel.” 10. “Off you go and I am glad to be rid of you.” 11. “…will never amount to anything.” 12. “He is too interested in sport. You can’t make a living out of sport.” Choose from: Stephen Fry; John Lennon; Einstein; Peter Ustinov; Sir Richard Branson; Laurie Lee; Winston Churchill; Gary Lineker; Charlotte Bronte; Princess Diana; Richard Briers; Roald Dahl May everyone in Fernhurst be blessed this Christmas wherever you are and whatever you are doing. We send you greetings. May 2021 be a better year for everyone. Sue Hodge 4 Fernhurst News December/January 2021
Fernhurst Choral Society Singing with Choirs around the World The choral society’s Zoom rehearsals have been successfully continuing this term and through the most recent ‘lockdown’ during November. We’ve been experimenting and innovating in the Zoom rehearsals; after rehearsing a piece, we then sing along with choirs from around the world. We’ve sung for example with Kings College Choir, Ukrainian and German conventional choirs and a small acapella ensemble. Albeit these choral performances are from recordings on YouTube. Nevertheless, these rehearsal run-through performances have been very enjoyable, and it feels slightly closer to singing communally with one’s peers in a normal rehearsal or performance. Unfortunately, for obvious reasons, we were unable to hold the scheduled “Come and Sing” for Handel’s Messiah in November. Equally disappointing has been the recent cancellation of the Petersfield Musical Festival concert in March next year. However, we remain hopeful that our planned performance of Mozart’s Requiem at Chichester Cathedral may still be able to go ahead in one form or another. Over the first couple of weeks this month, we’re gearing up for the society’s Christmas Party on 14th December. Unlike our usual events at this time of year, we won’t be able to invite Fernhurst village residents to join us for a carol concert, followed by a drink and mince pie. It will be held on Zoom of course and for society members only. We’ll be singing carols and a few brave volunteers will be entertaining us with individual ‘turns’, either readings, instrumentals, or singing. It will be fun. For early 2021, the society will be researching the opportunities for the choir, perhaps in small groups, to rehearse in a safe, socially-distanced way. Our ability to undertake these real-life rehearsals will depend upon the extent of the COVID infections early next year, Even though we may not be able to do this until the Spring, many of us are excited about the prospect and looking forward to having the opportunity to do so. If you want to realise a New Year resolution to get back to singing, even in a rather unusual way, and relieve the COVID ‘blues’, then visit our website, register and sign up. You can subscribe for just a few pounds for the Winter term. On behalf of the society, I wish everyone a happy Christmas and a joyous and healthy New Year. Keep washing your hands and stay well. Hort soc NEWs www.fernhurst.net/hortsoc/ From the Chairman Looking back over the past year, I would never have guessed what was in store! Hasn't it been a strange one? We started off with an amazing schedule full of wonderful speakers, events and outings. We had 'From Ground to Glass' - the story of Langham Brewery and how they make their award winning beers with some tasting along the way. We did manage to dodge the wet February weather for a very successful, hands on pruning workshop. On 5th March we had speaker Robin Walter who covered all aspects of our relationship with trees and woods, protecting them, and how we can bring more trees into our lives. His book 'Living with Trees' was due to be published then, sadly due to 'Lock Down' it was delayed and is due out now. I have contacted Haslemere Bookshop and they are going to order this book asap for us as there appeared to be a significant amount of interest on the night. Now it will be just in time for Christmas (fingers crossed). Our strong Committee have kept up to date and have adapted with changes through these unprecedented times. We have continued with Committee meetings via zoom and now we are finding speakers who are happy to share talks via zoom. Hopefully the quiz, outings, shows and anything we were unable to do will happen as usual next year. We have 148 members and sadly I know only about a third of you. I am sorry that due to the lock down circumstances, I have not been able to get to know you all better! I have ordered a large selection of bulbs and will be delivering 5 to each member in a small brown paper bag. I will leave them near your letterbox and ring your doorbell; if you are in perhaps you could give me a wave. (I will not be doing this in the dark or wet). Then if we manage our Spring Show I would love to see your bulbs blooming! Due to where I work I am tested weekly - I can wear a mask and gloves and keep my 6 Fernhurst News December/January 2021
distance. However if you wish for me to stay away please contact me directly. Stay safe, enjoy your gardens either from indoors or outside as weather permits, and I hope to see you at the AGM on Thursday 3 rd December at 7 30pm in the comfort of your own home via zoom (code to be sent nearer the time). December Notes Autumn appeared as a wonderful array of such fantastic colours! So much clearing up of leaves and what a crop of acorns, conkers and chestnuts. I hope you have all protected against frost by wrapping insulation around pipes, hoses and taps. There still may be a few more leaves to sweep up - I use them all for composting, mulching and covering my rhubarb bed. Each year I increase the height of it, with another round of wood to make it higher for growing longer rhubarb. I'm trying to do less digging, so I have let my chickens into the vegetable patch and they have a whale of a time. They enjoy pecking and scraping at the self-seeded calendula, chick- weed, clover and general weeds. Alas though it means no winter vegetables. I empty my most well-rotted compost heap - I have 3 in rotation filling, rotting and using. You could try asking around now for any supply of locally well-rotted manure to order. An indoor job is to clear up the greenhouse. Some of you may have done this in October but mine was still too full. Also you could wash down the glass. The tool shed could do with a tidy up - tools should be cleaned, tightened and sharpened, pots and seed trays washed and stacked in size order. Gift ideas for Christmas could include small handy tools, gardening gloves or labelling systems. A wonderful project for this month is to make a Christmas Wreath from garden materials. There's so much more I could talk about! However that’s probably enough - I hope that through lock down you have all managed to stay safe and productive. FERNHURST LIVING ADVENT CALENDAR In an attempt to spread a little bit Christmas community cheer in our lovely village I am organising a living advent calendar. It’s a Swedish tradition where people take turns to reveal a festive window in their house/business/community building in the run up to Christmas. They don’t need to be religious, just festive display that can be enjoyed by everyone in the village during the dark nights of the Christmas holidays. They can be as simple, or elaborate as you like, and all you really need is to have a window that can be easily seen from the pavement. Sadly the part of the tradition that sees people gathering to watch the unveiling of the window won’t be possible this year, but hopefully a lovely trail of beautiful windows will bring us all together in a different way during these tricky times. If you would like to take part, would like more details, or could give me a hand organising it you can either drop me a message on Facebook or email me at jameschris_@hotmail.com For more information on Living Advent calendars here are a few links: https://www.edenprojectcommunities.com/blog/the-living-advent-calendar https://mentalhealthcollective.org.uk/connected-neighbourhoods/ SCAM WATCH Covid 19 rules are forcing us to do more shopping on line or by phone. This is scammer’s delight. They can hide behind anonymity and work their evil. There are a few general rules to help you. 1. Try to stick to suppliers you know and trust. 2. Be very careful about buying “bargains”. 3. Avoid “clicking on Links”; it can be very expensive especially at Christmas time. 4. Imposters. Imposters can make their screen resemble that of a genuine supplier Always check the address. F.IDDLE.co.uk is NOT the same as FIDDLE.co.uk. 5. PENSIONS Retiring? Be careful of “Free Pension reviews” or “release cash from your Pension”. If in doubt call the FCA Consumer Helpline. 0800 111 6768. Peter Hudson 8 Fernhurst News December/January 2021

Tales from the Archives WHAT DID CLOSE FERNHURST SCHOOL AND WHAT DIDN’T Fernhurst School is no stranger to prolonged closure due to illness. The first recorded closure was in 1886 was due to an epidemic of Measles. When it re-opened four weeks later it was noted that almost every child had been attacked, and many were not sufficiently recovered to come back to school. (There were between 170-190 children on the register at the time.) In July 1890 all local schools were ordered to be closed due to Scarlet Fever and they did not reopen until 8 September. At that time the ‘Harvest Holidays’ were taken from the 3rd week in August to the 3rd week in September so that the children’s labour could be better used, instead of them taking time off during term time. An even worse outbreak came four years later when Measles was so rife that there was virtually no school from the end of June until October. Further closures occurred over the years, notably a seven week period in 1907. Along with the rest of the country Spanish Flu hit Fernhurst in 1918. Already closed for the now familiar Measles outbreak, Spanish Flu arrived hot on its heels, effectively shutting the school for the whole of the autumn term. A measles vaccine was not introduced until 1963. One event that didn’t close the school was very was cold weather in 1916. Coal and coke supplies failed to arrive and although the temperature only reached 38 deg F (4 deg C) in the Infants Dept and 43F (7C) in the rest of the school, Due to Covid restrictions on meeting in confined spaces it is not possible to open the Archive to visitors for the foreseeable future. If you have any queries on local history that you would like the team to help you with please contact us by email: archives@fernhurstsociety.org.uk Christine Maynard - Fernhurst Archive Prayer for Fernhurst You are welcome to join local Christians who regularly pray for concerns and needs of Fernhurst on the last Thursday of each month (except August and December). Fernhurst Cricket Club fernhurstcricketclub.org.uk As per the not-very-subtle hint in the last issue, young Sam Meier (pictured) was the big winner at the Sunday XI awards. No longer can we describe him as a ‘rising’ star because in the season of 2020 he was The Star. He won the Evans Shield for batting with an average of 72, amassing 436 runs in a truncated season. When I tell you the next two batsmen on the list averaged 29 it gives you a measure of what Sam achieved against some very handy attacks. The Sunday XI may not play in a league but don’t be fooled into thinking the opposition is low quality. The Warren Trophy for bowling went to a player with 21 wickets, 11 maidens and a best of 4-6. His average was 7.19 and his name is ... Sam Meier. Sam’s deadly swing bowling impressed and trapped many visitors, including a former captain of Hampshire, Mark Nicholas. Never let it be said the Sunday XI is a one man team but in 2020 it sometimes seemed that way. In fact, 16 new players debuted for the Sunday XI this year with a total squad of 44. We added Arundel Castle to our away grounds so, along with trips to Goodwood and Petworth, we are getting quite lah-di- dah. The Vice Presidents’ Shield for catch of the season was again close-fought with another strong claim by 2019 winner Chris Williams in the autumnal match at Lynchmere. However, minutes later, Rob Unwin took a spectacular, Stokesian one-hander in the slips. The look of shock on our faces was trumped only by the look on Rob’s. Next year it could be you: whether you fancy two games or 12, do join us for 2021, there is a team or role for everyone at Fernhurst CC. Simon Vigar Fernhurst News December/January 2021 11
From the Vicarage Ah, babies’ first words. Mine, apparently, was ‘no’. One of my brothers’ was ‘bang’. Other common ones, we’re told, include mama, dada, ball, bye, hi, dog, baby, woof woof, and banana. These days, however, I reckon that they’re just as likely to be words like ‘unprecedented’, ‘social distancing’, and ‘face covering’. Because those are the words they’ll hear so frequently in conversation and on TV and social media … Words can be powerful. They can inspire us, make us laugh, move us to tears, mock and wound us, enrage us and lead us to hate. They can take root in our souls and shape how we think and behave. And it’s all too easy for people to take to social media to vent their feelings without thought for the impact on those on the receiving end. In an age of mass media, we can feel over- whelmed by the deluge of words that wash over us on a daily basis. And currently, in the midst of a pandemic, anxiety, fear and despair can spread just as rapidly as the virus. It’s so easy for good news to get lost among the bad news and the fake news. Christmas is coming, and while we may have to celebrate it differently this year (how I long to sing some carols!), the message is unchanged. Christmas is fundamentally about good news for the world, a message of love from God. He didn’t send an email, post a tweet, come up with a soundbite or generate a sensational headline. He came in person, Emmanuel – ‘God with us’ – as a vulnerable baby. As he grew, and throughout his lifetime, he experienced all that it is to be human, including being ‘socially distanced’ by those in power, as he challenged fake messages about God and spoke of God’s heart for all his creation. I don’t know what Jesus’ first word was, but I do know that he embodied God’s Word to us. Which is ‘love’. With every blessing, Nick And now a few words from Anita… During the first lockdown, I took part in the 2.6 Challenge to raise money for the Helen Arkell Dyslexia Charity where I work, which supports children and adults for whom written words can present a challenge. My challenge was to 12 Fernhurst News December/January 2021
write 26 poems in 26 days. These have now been published in a beautifully designed booklet, thanks to Blackdown Printers. An ideal present for posting or as a stocking filler, the booklets are available from the Parish and Community Room Office next to St. Margaret’s Church on Thursday and Friday mornings, or from the Vicarage, priced at £10. You can pay electronically (Sort code 40-52-40, A/C number 00021139) using the reference ‘Poetry/ your surname’ or by cash on collection. 50% of the funds will go to the Helen Arkell Dyslexia Charity, specifically to support children from low income families, and the other 50% will go to support the work of the Benefice of Fernhurst with Lynchmere and Camelsdale. Many thanks for your support. Anita A very happy Christmas (and a much better 2021) from all of us here at St Margaret’s, St Peter’s and St Paul’s! And now from the pew ….. Writing this article during the second national lockdown for Covid-19 it’s hard to predict how the Christmas Festival of 2020 will be celebrated, for as soon as tentative plans are put in place they have to be put on hold……. But where there is a will there is usually a way and that was certainly the case with the traditional Act of Remembrance on Sunday 8th November at our village War Memorial. The Cubs and Scouts were sadly missing and the parade service had to be abandoned but on a foggy but very mild and still morning about 50 people gathered, socially distanced etc, to hear the familiar words led by Anita our Lay Reader. Somehow the 2 minutes silence seemed even more poignant and heartfelt than usual but the many conversations afterwards showed how important sharing time with each other is and how much it is missed. Looking back even further, the Annual Church Meeting was finally held on the 25th October after the morning service – six months late! The comprehensive booklet of reports, written before lockdown one, from all the various groups within our church community was beautifully compiled by Nastasha, our Benefice Administrator, and spoke of a time when so much was ‘going on’! Maybe this enforced period of reflection will give each group the opportunity to decide how best to move forward when restrictions are finally lifted. There were many ‘thank yous’ for all those working largely behind the scenes to keep the church running smoothly, especially for Anne Pennington our treasurer who is retiring from this very demanding job. Christmas this year will be very different from any other, but tentative plans have been made for 2 Celebration Services to be held at St Margaret’s on Sunday 13h December and on Christmas Eve. They will comprise seasonal music performed by small groups and soloists plus various readings and drama. Due to all the restrictions already in place there will be tight control on numbers and there will be posters and other notices in the magazine explaining how you can reserve a place to one of these events. Although it is hard to keep positive when so many loved traditions will be missing in 2020, it is good to remember that out faith is a constant source of strength! Who knows what exciting opportunities will arrive in 2021. Lord, You make all things new, You bring hope alive in our hearts, and cause our Spirits to be born again. Thank you for this new year, for all the potential it holds. Come and kindle in us a mighty flame so that in our time many will see the wonders of God and live forever to praise Your glorious name. Amen Happy Christmas and a peaceful New Year everyone! Having managed a half term of face to face meetings for all sections, sadly the Scout Group had to return to virtual Scouting – either online or sending activities for them to complete. But we are still active – doing our best to keep our young people engaged at this challenging time. All our leaders have been amazing, and they deserve high praise for the continued enthusiasm and support for all our young people The Cubs did manage to spend an evening making lavender bags, which they have been selling as a small fundraiser for the group. Many thanks to Chris Lloyd for donating the bags and some lavender. And to Kitty Aycinea for lavender also. We will hopefully be delivering Christmas cards, working together with the Fernhurst Centre and Liphook Scouts to provide this service to the community, later this month. Our traditional Remembrance Parade was also hit by Covid restrictions, but we still managed to commemorate in our way, within each section. GILLIAN KEEGAN COLUMN Winter always brings extra challenges for our National Health Service so we always knew this would be very much increased during a global pandemic. Although in the Chichester District we may feel far removed from the worst of the outbreak, the data for our area is worsening with our infection rates rapidly rising, which in time, if left unchecked, will translate to more cases. No one wanted to reintroduce these measures, but the Prime Minister has sought to act now in order to protect our most vulnerable and the NHS. Of course, this means that businesses will require extra support. This is why the Chancellor has extended the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme until the end of March 2021, covering 80 per cent of wages for hours not worked, as well 80 per cent of trading profits for the Self-Employed between November and January. It’s important to remember that this national lockdown is not the same as the previous one and it has been legislated so that it will end on 2 nd December. At which point, it is hoped the R-number will be below one, and we can return to a more measured and localised approach. Though we’ve had to be considerably more cautious since the start of this month and I haven’t been able to go out and about as I normally would, at the end of October it was my great pleasure to visit the Lodsworth Larder. The Larder has an amazing range of foods, from the sweets of childhood, though to local produce, delicious pies and wines. I certainly made a point of stocking-up during my visit! But the Larder has also proven to be an essential hub for local residents, providing postal services, deliveries to those who may have some trouble getting out and about, but also to those who simply want a coffee and a chat. We are very lucky to have amazing local business like the Larder who rally to support residents during these uncertain times. The new lockdown measures won’t be easy for anyone, so if you need extra help please make sure you reach out to West Sussex County Council’s Community Hub who are on hand 8.00am - 8.00pm, seven days a week: 033 022 27980 – or get in touch with me, gillian.keegan.mp@parliament.uk Fernhurst News December/January 2021 19
