2019 FebruaryNewsletter EGM EXTRAORDINARY GENERAL MEETING Thursday 21st February at 7.00pm. It is important that members attend this meeting to hear the full facts and figures for themselves and not to rely on rumours etc. Visually Impaired Bowls England 2019 National Indoor Pairs Championships Nottingham Indoor Bowling Centre Saturday 16th February & Sunday 17th February ENGLISH INDOOR BOWLING ASSOCIATION Open National Championships 2018/2019 & Over 55’s National Championships 2018/2019 Markers will be required for the National Championships which will be held at the Nottingham Indoor Bowling Centre during late March & Early April. Sheets will be on the Club Notice Board for anyone able to spare some time to assist during these Championships to add their names for the times when they will be available. 1
BIIBC British Isle Indoor Bowls Council BIIBC British Isles Championships 2019 The Championships this year will be held at Falcon IBC, Chelmsford, CM3 3FB, between Friday 8th March and Saturday 16th March. The Ladies International Series is 8th – 10th March and the Mens International Series is 14th – 16th March. Sandwiched in between are the British Isles Championships for the National Champions of England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales and the Channel Islands. Four Nottingham players will represent England in the Seniors Fours Competition. They are Keith Burton, Russ Pearce, Ronnie Cowan and John Mildren. England play Channel Islands at 9.30 on Tuesday 12th March in the Semi Final and if successful will play in the Final the following morning at 9.30. The timings are subject to change. . The ‘Just’ 2019 World Indoor Bowls Championships Congratulations to Simon Skelton for reaching the Final of the 2019 World Championships held at Potters, a fantastic achievement. Simon who was unseeded, played some great bowls to finish Runner-up in this year’s championships beating a number of seeds on the way to the final. The first round saw Simon beating 3rd seed David Gourlay MBE of Scotland 8-7, 8-5. In the second round 14th seed Jason Greenslades of Wales was beaten 6-6, 6-5. Sixth seed Darren Burnett of Scotland was Simon’s opponent in the quarter final, another close fought game saw the Nottingham player going through to the semis 6-6, 6-5. The semi final saw Simon up against fellow Englishman Nick Brett, the 7th seed had been having a great tournament and took the first set 9-2, in the second set Simon was 1-7 down before fighting back to take the set 8-7 to force a 3 end tie break which he won 2-1 to reach to the final of the World Indoor Bowls Championships for the first time, having three times previously reached the semi finals. The final was between Simon and the ninth seed, Scottish Champion Stewart Anderson. Stewart won the first set 11-5. In the second set Simon battled away to win the set 8-6 and force another tie break, this was the first time in the entire competition that the Scott had lost a set. Stewart Anderson held his nerve to win the tie break 2-0 by drawing to two re-spotted jacks with the final bowl of each end to regain the trophy which he previously won in 2013. Presidents’ Day 2019 The annual contest between teams captained by the Men’s & Ladies’ Presidents took place on Sunday 27th January at the Nottingham Indoor Bowling Centre. Around 40 members attended a very successful event, in which 5 rinks of trips were played between the two teams captained by Phil Morley and Shirley Ellis, the Men’s & Ladies’ Presidents. The Men’s President’s team won by a score of 85 shots to 77 with the winning rink being Phil Morley, Bob Taylor & Pauline Marriott. Winning Rink - Pauline, Phil & Bob. A great time was had by all with plenty of laughter as well as good bowls played in a very friendly spirit. An excellent meal was provided by Lou, as always and Bernie & Joan provided drinks from the bar. Good Housekeeping Once you have enjoyed your drinks or meals please could I ask you as a matter of courtesy and good manners to help Lou by returning your empty cups and plates to the kitchen. It really will help to ensure that the crockery is washed up speedily and it will also ensure that tables in the centre are clear and kept tidy. Thank you in anticipation of your help in this matter. Winter Season 2018 - 2019 Denny Cup The Final Stages of the Denny Cup will be on Saturday 9th March at Ruby Thornfield IBC, Nottingham will play South Shields in the Semi Final at 10.00am. The other Semi Final is between Wey Valley & Exonia, the winners will play the final in the afternoon at 3.00pm. Coppock Trophy Nottingham had a good win, beating Newark at home by 86 shots to 39 on Saturday 26th January. The next games will be the away to South Forest on Saturday 16th February and home to Bassetlaw on Saturday 23rd February. Adams Trophy On Saturday 26th January Nottingham beat Erewash by 18 points to 6 to move back up the league table. The game against Newark due to be played on February 2nd was cancelled by Newark, this game is to be re-arranged. Nottingham beat Bassetlaw on by 17 points to 7 on Saturday 9th February. The next games is against South Forest on Saturday 23rd February. Friendlies Nottingham played Lincoln away on Saturday 2nd February, losing by 160 shots to 109. On Sunday 10th February Nottingham beat Barwell away by 138 shots to 95. The next game is away to Tamworth on Sunday 24th February. Friendly Matches: Would any player who has put their name on the list to play and for some reason cannot attend, Please as a matter of courtesy notify Shirley Ellis the Sunday Team Captain, who can be contacted on 0115 770 027. This is necessary for Shirley to organise the teams. This means that the total of each column, each row & each block must add up to 45. This is a slightly more difficult puzzle, which has 31 of the 81 squares already filled in and should be possible to complete in around 15 - 30 minutes. All answers & Solutions are on Page 10 9
