PRESIDENTS REPORT Jan-March 2018

Waimauku Lions rounded off the year in style at Settler's Lodge, at
the Christmas lunch, even though we struggled with the sad news of
Avis' passing. Thank you to those who were able to come to her
funeral. For our Club, and for our families, it has at times been a sad
year. We are looking forward to making this New Year a better one.

I hope everyone enjoyed their Christmas and summer break,
hopefully spent together with family and friends. Wayne and I
completed the Lake Waikaremoana Great Walk. Even though Day 1
was exactly when that storm hit, we had a great time and can
thoroughly recommend this track to anyone who is interested in
trekking over a period of 4 days and staying in basic huts.

2018 is gearing up to be a great year for fundraising, starting with
the Gala on Saturday 28 April. Muriwai Surf Club really appreciate
we are fundraising for the upgrade and repairs necessary to their
patrol tower on Muriwai Beach. Apparently, the roof needs some
repairs, the windows need replacing and so does the door. As the
patrol tower is located right in the dunes, it is exposed to the
elements year-round, which means that materials deteriorate rather
quickly. The cost of these repairs and upgrades is estimated to be
around $3,000. We already have bookings from many stallholders,
so fingers crossed for great weather and an excellent turn-out for the
Gala. Linda Forbes (Region Chairperson) and Roger Davis (Zone
Chairman) have kindly offered to assist on the day on our
membership stand, and further help from the District might also be
available. The Garage Sale will be big again this year and will start
at 7am (whilst the Gala will start at 9am). This might bring in some
early punters!

The Lions Club of Henderson-West Auckland joined us for our
business meeting in March. This is a great idea, as we were able to
share ideas and thoughts on projects, fundraising, and membership
April 2018 BULLETIN - LIONS CLUB OF WAIMAUKU - Lions Clubs NZ
drives. Hopefully we can visit one of their meetings and those of
other such active clubs in our region, later in 2018 or in 2019.
Henderson-West Auckland have their annual Runway Challenge at
Hobsonville Point on 20 May and have asked if we can provide 6 to
10 helpers to marshal on the day. We will discuss this again during
our April meeting.

During our February and March meetings we welcomed several
guest speakers, including:
   • Milan Vujcich, who reported back on his trip to Africa
   • Anita from Waimauku School, asking (and receiving)
        funding for two school camps
   • Ashley Thompson, who reported back on her trip on the
        Spirit of Adventure

Our Social Nights have been very enjoyable, with an evening of
bowls in February and pizzas and pastas at Zac’s in March. We are
looking forward to our May outing, which will hopefully be at the
Warner Bros film studio in Hollywood Kumeu.

                FINANCE AND FUNDRAISING

                       GIBBS FARM VISIT

Our main fund-raising event for 2017 was the Gibbs farm open day.
It was held on a sunny day on 7 December 2017. It was completely
sold out and returned a profit of close to $9,000. It was a wonderful
day for those that attended. The park contains the largest collection
of large-scale outdoor sculptures in New Zealand and an interesting
variety of animals. There are a large number of artworks by different
artists, many who are internationally recognised. The scale and
quality of the art and park itself is outstanding and for those that

have not been it is recommended as something to visit in the future.
A big thanks to Harry Hilditch for organising this event and to
Raelene and Malcolm who organised the lunches. Some photos from
the day follow:

GALA 2018

Planning for the 2018 Gala is underway and some details are covered
in President Carla’s Report. It is planned for 28 April at Waimauku
shops. The Garage Sale starts at 7am and the Gala Day at 9am. We
already have a lot of interest from stall holders and it should be a
great day. All hands-on deck is requested to make this a successful
day. The target for fundraising is the Muriwai Surf Club to undertake
much needed maintenance and upgrade works on the Patrol Tower.

                  YOUTH AND COMMUNITY

                        MEMBERSHIP

John Grafton reported there are 4 potential new members. Would
like to try Quest programme again and work with local school. A
membership drive is to be undertaken at the Gala. We will have a
separate stand and Linda Forbes (Regional chairperson), Roger
Davis (Zone Chairman) and maybe Verna Healy (Helensville) and
Ricky Singh (GMT) have offered to assist. This is appreciated.

Also, if you know other people that might like to join (family,
friends, neighbours, colleagues), please discuss with them. People
join to get to know people in the area, to do good in their
community, or to expand their networks.

        GOLD CENTENNIAL SERVICE CHALLENGE

Waimauku Lions were presented with the Gold Centennial Service
Challenge award and a Lions Legacy Project batch by Roger Davis
at the last Zone meeting. Carla displayed the badges at our business
meeting in March.

               HENDERSON-WEST LIONS CLUB

We hosted the Henderson-West Lions club at our business meeting
on 19 March. Seventeen members attended. It was great to have
them. They provided us with good company and enlightened us with
their various activities. President Eric Carter presented us with their
new club banner. Doug Grinter told us about the Runway Challenge
Fun Run. It is to be held at Hobsonville Point on Sunday 20th May.
They would like 6-10 of our members to help as marshals on the
day. More information is available at:

WELFARE OFFICER

We were all saddened by the death of Avis Edmonds on the 3rd of
December. Our deepest condolences to Grahame and family.

well. Peter Freeman is the welfare officer and his role is to contact

TRUE STORIES AND JOKES

My friend, who’s a nurse in an emergency department, was telling
me about a patient who arrived with a gash in his head. Apparently,
the man was a farmer, and he and his son were working in a field
when he’d felt a stone in his boot. He’s tried to shake his foot to
work the stone out but – finding it difficult to keep his balance – he
decided to hold onto a fence pole.

The son, looking up from what he was doing, noticed his father
standing on one leg shaking vigorously and thought he was holding
onto the electrified fence.

Grasping a large stick, the son whacked his dad to break his hold on
the fence, causing the injury to his head.

Stitches were required to mend the wound, although I’m not sure if
the father and son’s relationship is mended yet.

……………………………………………………………………

A husband who has six children begins to call his wife “mother of
six” rather than by her first name. The wife, amused at first,
chuckles. But after a few years, she’s grown tired of it. “Mother of
six,” he would say, “what’s for dinner tonight?… Get me a beer!”

She gets very frustrated. Finally, while attending a party together, the
husband jokingly shouts out, “Mother of six, I think it’s time to go
home!”

She immediately shouts back, “I’ll be right with you, father of four!”
