FEBRUARY 2021 Cup Returns To Ploughing Association In the book Lincoln Ploughing Association Inc, the first 100 years, by Forrest Wood, the details of nine cups and trophies are given. Since the printing of that history, Lincoln has been fortunate to have received back a number of cups, that have been won outright by the winners. One such cup was recently returned from the family of Mr. Jim Gibson. this a very striking cup, measuring over 21 inches high, is recorded as being donated to the Lincoln Ploughing Association in1937 by Mrs. Gilmour, in memory of her late husband John Gilmour of Tai Tapu. Mr. Gilmour was president of the association for 4 years, and was a prominent ploughman and judge, died in 1931. The cup was to be awarded for the most points in “A” which was 2 furrow high cut, and could be won outright by being won 3 times. This handsome cup has only 3 different names on it, having been won by: J. Merrin 1937 A. Brown 1938 J. Gibson 1939,1947 and 1948 After this time when Jim Gibson won the cup outright, another J. Gibson Memorial cup was procured to replace the original and is now a challenge cup and so is still in use at the president time. None of the present committee have any memory of this cup, and no decision has been made as to the future for this cup. . Profile of Fred Pilling Good afternoon I have always liked horses starting off when I was a small boy in England, I used to sit on the right hand of the bus so that I could see the horses that hadn’t gone out to work in the stables which ran underneath the railway arches. I then got in with the milkman and went with him eventually driving his horse Dolly. We then got a pony and cart to pick up the kitchen waste from various households for the couple of sows that we kept. I kept this up until I was about 19. During the following years I went to shows and followed other horsey things along the way I used to help the carter who worked for Stalybridge Corporation at shows etc. until they pensioned their last horse of. I bought their set of show harness and decorations of them which I have still got and still show it at various shows. In 1964 I moved to NZ and for the first couple of years did nothing with horses I had other things on my mind! I still kept an interest with the horses and then in 1970 my kids said there were a couple of horses on Kainui Road so that was the start with horses proper in NZ. I bought a horse at a sale at Claudlands she was a good mare called Royal Dawn and from her I have bred every horse that I own, I am on my 4th generation and have won lots of prizes for confirmation and have won some working class. I started ploughing way back with a borrowed plough over at George Simmons place I soon bought a plough from a museum at Waihi for $200 and that’s the one I use today. The first competition with the ploughing association was a competition at Reporoa. In those days we had the opening split and crown done with a tractor and we just carried on ploughing. Nowadays we do the opening ourselves. The best that I have done is champion on two occasions in 2014 and 2015. The years that I have been ploughing have been good with good comradery and seeing the country and all this time I have worked as an engineer. Fred Pilling 5
