Presidents Welcome The Ekka is always a very special time of year for Queensland. Those crisp and sunny days in August create a backdrop for showcasing the very best of the State’s agriculture industry to the city, and provide an important meeting point and celebration for the people working across the supply chains which keep the world fed and clothed. Nobody could have predicted the way the Ekka, and the world, would be impacted by COVID-19 in 2020. It’s been a tough year for everyone and the pandemic is continuing to unfold and reveal new challenges almost every day. From an agricultural perspective, it has been heartening to see the role Australian primary producers play in providing a safe and secure source of nourishment brought more sharply into focus, even amidst the extreme challenges the global community faces. With this in mind it was important to the Committee of the Rural Press Club of Queensland to present our Annual Malcolm McCosker Memorial Address in 2020 – our flagship event and one with which we always aim to make a meaningful contribution to the Australian agricultural discussion. Given we transitioned to online delivery of events earlier this year we thought this was the ideal opportunity to bring a highly-respected international speaker to the Ekka, and it is with great pleasure we present President of the US-based National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, Marty Smith. A rancher from Florida and respected attorney, Marty will speak about the US recovery from the COVID-19 crisis and his role in leading this organisation through this difficult period. From processing plant shutdowns to international trade difficulties and working with the Trump administration, Marty will speak openly about the challenges, truths and opportunities which have emerged, and what this means for both the US and Australia on the global beef stage. As always, we also extend our sincerest thanks to our Ekka Breakfast sponsors - QRIDA and Westpac - for their ongoing support in 2020 and their commitment to supporting a prosperous rural sector across Queensland. You can find more information on our sponsors, and our Virtual Door Prize sponsor, Kent Saddlery, in the latter pages of this booklet. Thanks also to you for your support and encouragement, and for being a valued part of our Rural Press Club community. We trust you enjoy this year’s event and look forward to sitting down for a real breakfast with you at the Ekka in 2021.
