PRESIDENT’S REPORT – FEBRUARY 2019 Hello fellow Club Members, I trust that everyone has had a great Christmas, and that Santa was good to you. No doubt there was a little too much food and drink consumed, so that will have to be worked‐off as the NZSBK Nationals get into their stride. The Suzuki Series provided some exciting racing, and was a window as to how the Nationals will progress. Some riders showed their hand early, as to their form leading up to the Nationals ‐ while others were getting into the groove. Planning is all in place for Moto Fest in March, and sometime in late January / early February Adam, Juniper and Angela will be contacting people to put in place the staff for the running of the Moto Fest event. Round One of the Nationals at Ruapuna saw a number of AMCC Club members racing, but unfortunately things did not go to plan for the weekend. But no doubt all will be looking to Timaru to get their Series back on track. AMCC wishes all of the riders the best for Round Two, and we look forward to seeing the Club members to the fore. Just a little house keeping for riders "Race numbers" ‐‐ Please work on these" Read rule (10.2a) and ….. “Noise” ‐ remember its 95dBa. Now is the time to get these two items sorted out. Cheers, Paul Stewart | AMCC President
ELTON GOONAN Friend of AMCC ‐ Elton Goonan ‐ departed Hampton Downs in November, and the Club recognized Elton’s support with a signed photo‐montage, which now hangs in the office of his new role with MSNZ.
Auckland Motorcycle Club MEDIA RELEASE 8 December, 2018. Titles Decided in AMCC Club Series: The predicted wet weather never eventuated, and the final Round of the Auckland Motorcycle Club Summer Series was held in warm and dry conditions last Sunday at Hampton Downs. As expected, the double points meeting threw up a number of surprises; and the Club Series titles were decided by small margins in many instances. None more so than in Superbike – where Taupo’s Connor London (Kawasaki ZX‐10R) got home by a single point over Daniel Mettam (Suzuki GSX‐R1000). Mettam took a narrow victory in Race One, but London prevailed in the final two races, by margins of 0.1 seconds in both ! Adrian Clare (Yamaha R1) took out the Superstock 1000 title. Nathanael Diprose (Suzuki GSX‐R600) was a comfortable overall winner in Supersport 600, however David Hall was very fast on the day – both preparing for the upcoming summer events. Scott Findlay (Kawasaki ZXR400) took the spoils in Superlite, after a season long arm‐wrestle with Nick Olson (Suzuki Gladius 650); while sharing the Intermediate field was ProTwin 650, who were a highlight of the Series with healthy fields and plenty of battles. Matt Dunlop (Suzuki SV650) took a second consecutive Club title with seven wins from eight starts. However Alex Butson (Suzuki SV650) took a victory over Matt at Round Two. Aaron Lambourne (Honda RS125) secured the 125ccGP Club title. Nathanael Diprose also dominated Lightweight – enjoying a season on the Gavin Veltmeyer KTM RC390, and taking a second consecutive title for that bike. Diprose was beaten only once, at Round Three, by Nick Burke (Yamaha R3). In 250 ProLite Sean White (Kawasaki 250) swept Round Three, to take the Series title from Darrick Kattenberg (Kawasaki 250). It was seven wins to one overall, however no points in Race One of the season had seen White playing catch‐up all Series. There was drama in Sidecar also. A DNS for the Lawrance Brothers (LCR 1000) in the final race of the Series allowed Hall & Prentis (BLR 600) to snatch the Club Series title at the final hurdle. Post Classic and Clubman titles were also decided; while the Carl Cox Motorsport Hyosung Cup continue their Series with two events in 2019, and will finish up at the Motofest meeting in early March. The 2018‐2019 Series was organised and promoted by the Auckland Motorcycle Club – who acknowledge all our valuable partners for the season:‐ Carl Cox Motorsport, Castrol, Counties Honda, Darbi Accessories, Hyosung NZ, Motomail, Mr Motorcycles, Nationwide Accessories, Spectrum Motorcycles, Red Baron, and Whites Power Sports – along with MX Timing and CTAS Live.

BUCKET 2‐HOUR, Tokoroa. I went down to the awesome Tokoroa Kart Track last weekend for the annual Bucket 2‐Hour race, for which I partnered with Blair Lambarth. It was a pretty wet weekend, with very little dry time over the weekend in‐between rain showers. We decided to ride Blair’s 4‐stroke 150 from the start, instead of my 2‐stroke 80, as we figured it would be a better match for the wet conditions. In retrospect I think it would have been better to ride my bike for a session on the Saturday, as when I did end up riding my bike, I found that being on something I was properly comfortable and familiar with, I was able to tip the bike over much more naturally into the corners and properly focus on the track. By this I realised that the track surface was really quite grippy in the rain ‐ more than I thought, and knowing this I’m sure I could have pushed Blair’s bike harder, and earlier on. On the Saturday Blair had set the fastest times for the day, so things were looking good for us. I had a few sessions to get into a rhythm on his bike, as well as one sneak‐peek ride on Liam Venters rocketship. I ended the day still a couple of seconds off the pace in the wet, but feeling quite comfortable on the #77 in the end. Race day began wet again, with qualifying having 2 sessions ‐ both in full wet conditions, but with some bonus petrol sploshed around the track too! Blair rode the first session, getting the fastest time with a 47s?; and I rode the second, qualifying with a 46.555s, which put us on pole, the perfect place to kick off the 2‐hour. Blair took the first stint, starting the race and doing the Le‐Mans start. Unlike the practice start, this time we had some trouble, and Blair had been overtaken by most of the others before he was able to get his bike started. When it was going though, he got off to a great start, catching up to the leaders after only about a lap, then taking the lead and looking to put us in a really good position for the race. Sadly not even 5 minutes into the race, Blair suffered an engine failure, taking us out of the race instantly.
We got the bike back to the pits, then decided we’d get my 2‐stroke fuelled and ready so that we could still get some riding in. A little while later I was out for the first time that weekend on the 2‐stroke, the track still being very wet. I started to enjoy myself quite quickly, and got into a good rhythm for the next 30 – 40 minutes, setting the fastest lap of the race with a 45.321s. I also had an exciting rear slide when on the gas which was real nice as it was actually controllable, unlike the super slippery Mt Wellington surface that I’m used to. When I had had enough fun I came back in and Blair went out for a go. Sadly the bars, which hadn’t been a problem for me, moved on him under braking into the hairpin one time and he had a fairly fast crash. I guess it wasn’t to be our year this time, but it is like that sometimes, and there were definitely a bunch of positives to take out of the weekend. Congratulations to Daniel & Will for winning the first 2‐Hour race at Tokoroa. Nathanael Diprose – Nov 2018.

#88 & #6 – AMCC Rd 3 2nd December wrapped up the Auckland Motorcycle Club 2018 Championship. The season has started fairly well, as I won both the SuperSport 600 Championship, ahead of Tarbon Walker; and the Lightweight Production Championship, over Nick Burke. We got lucky with the weather. It had looked like certain rain, but there were just a few puddles on the track by the time practice started, and it stayed dry all day! The Senior’s qualifying went alright, starting 4th on the grid, on the outside of the front row ‐ and 2nd 600 behind Royd Walker‐Holt. Sadly, before the racing started, there was 2 large oil spills that were now covered with dust. One all around Turn 4, and the other all around the final sweeper. Still, the track was the same for everyone, and all three races went well. Race One was fairly close between David Hall, Tarbon, and myself; and I finished a tenth ahead of David to nab 1st, after getting by him earlier in the race. Race Two started with David getting his usual rocket start to lead initially, but I was ahead by the end of the 2nd lap. I held this still going across the line into the final lap, but David dived up the inside into Turn One with a block pass. I closed up and tried to get a clean run across the dust on Turn Four and a good drive out so I could pass on the inside into Turn Five, but had a slide coming out and finished up 2nd. The final race was another win, and by the end of the day I was satisfied with how I was going for the conditions, getting into the 1:08s comfortably on old tyres, and much happier with how the bike was handling after getting the forks serviced. The Junior’s on the KTM RC390 was another fun day riding the little bike. I qualified on pole, but started from pit lane for the first two races. Both races had a lot of overtaking making things exciting. In Race One I managed to catch Nick, who was leading ‐ and overtake before the end to take the win; but he held on in the slightly shorter Race Two and I came home in 2nd. For Race Three I did start from my grid position, and it was a less interesting race ‐ but I felt good on the bike, getting down to a 1:17.0 which was great for how the track was. #88 & #6 – Suzuki Series Rd 1 A week after the AMCC finale we headed down to Taupo for the first Round of the 2018 Suzuki Series. I like Taupo, but unfortunately as the weekend started my stomach took a turn for the worse, leaving me feeling rather unsettled throughout the weekend. I wasn’t able to eat much, and was left with far less energy than ideal. I missed the first round of practice on the Saturday, and though the 390 was okay to ride, I didn’t feel very good with the increased speeds of the 600. In F2 I qualified back on the 4th row in 13th, making Turn One rather tricky for both races. The first race I was behind Tarbon and Roman Rajek, managing to get by Roman on Lap 6, and Tarbon on the penultimate lap, and finishing up in 10th place. In Race Two I was again behind Roman for the first part of the race, passing on the 7th lap to again come home in 10th place. I was lapping in the 1:33s, and though I know I should be going faster, I had to accept it for how I was feeling. I’m 9th in the standings after Round One. On the KTM 390 in F3, I’m on a rather slow bike for the class, which makes things interesting, especially as there are so many people out there. I qualified on the head of the 6th row with a 1:44.2s, and when Race One started was in a good rhythm, and enjoying riding with new tyres for the first time on the bike. Scarily though going flat out in top gear coming towards the far hairpin on the 2nd lap, I grabbed for the brake at my usual braking marker, and the lever came straight into my knuckles without slowing down the bike at all! I had to react fast, hitting the rear brake; and quick as I could grabbed the front brake again, but this time with all 4 fingers. I managed to keep it on the track, but it was a hair‐raising moment, and I took it quite easy for the next few laps to see if the brake would get any better or worse. Having dropped from 18th to 27th, I ended up in 24th at the finish. I didn’t go out in race 2, as didn’t think it was safe as it was. All in all a rather low start to this year’s Suzuki Series, but I’m looking forward to Round Two at Manfield next weekend. Hopefully I’ll be in a better state of health, and be able to come back stronger. Thanks to Suzuki NZ, Pirelli Tyres, AMCC, AGV Helmets, RST Leathers, EBC Brakes, Tsubaki Chains, Colemans Suzuki, Gavin Veltmeyer, and my awesome family and girlfriend. I couldn’t do this without you. Nathanael Diprose
