Good Friday—Tenebrae
                                     April 2, 2021
                     We warmly welcome all our guests this evening.
           We are pleased you have come to join us for this Good Friday Service.
             We look forward to talking with you and seeing you on Sunday.

Introduction: The ancient service of Tenebrae (“Shadows”) has been followed on
Good Friday for centuries. It usually takes two forms: one, following the stations of
the cross, or two, meditations on the seven last words of Christ. We will follow the
second order this evening. The church is fully lit at the beginning of the service,
and gradually darkened as each word is reflected upon. At the end of the service is
the reading of the burial, the closing of the book, and the extinguishing of the can-
dle. In total darkness, the bell tolls seven times, the candle is brought back, and the
people exit in silence.

C: Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world!

                   Responsive Reading: Psalm 22:1, 4-6, 14-19

P. My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?
C. Why are You so far from helping Me, and from the words of My groaning?

P. Our fathers trusted in You;
C. They trusted, and You delivered them.

P. They cried to You, and were delivered;
C. They trusted in You, and were not ashamed.

P. But I am a worm, and no man;
C. A reproach of men, and despised by the people.

P. I am poured out like water, and all My bones are out of joint;
C. My heart is like wax; It has melted within Me.

P. My strength is dried up like a potsherd, and My tongue clings to My jaws;
C. You have brought Me to the dust of death.

P. For dogs have surrounded Me;
C. The congregation of the wicked has enclosed Me. They pierced My hands
   and My feet;

P. I can count all My bones.
C. They look and stare at Me.

P. They divide My garments among them,
C. And for My clothing they cast lots.

P. But You, O Lord, do not be far from Me;
C. O My strength, hasten to help Me!
