BIOGRAPHIES Dr. Nathan Hess has soloed with the Manassas Symphony Orchestra, Erie Philharmonic, Erie Chamber Orchestra, Western New York Chamber Orchestra, and York Symphony Orchestra, among others. Recent guest recital appearances and masterclasses have included the American Liszt Society Festival; The Americas Society in New York City; College Music Society Northeast Regional Conference; The Second Sunday Recital Series in Binghamton, NY; Bowling Green State University; Duke University; University of Wisconsin Eau Claire; Randolph College; and Duquesne University. Hess holds the Doctor of Musical Arts and Master of Music degrees from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, and the Bachelor of Music degree from James Madison University. For five years Hess chaired the piano program at the Pennsylvania Governor’s School for the Arts in Erie, teaching piano to some of the state's most talented pre-college students. He performed in and produced a set of recordings for the textbook Harmony in Context, published by McGraw-Hill and written by Miguel Roig-Francoli. In addition to teaching and performing, Dr. Hess is active in Music Teachers National Association and also adjudicates frequently throughout the region and East Coast. Dr. Hess is the Mary A. Spadafor Endowed Chair of Music and Associate Professor of Music in the D’Angelo Department of Music at Mercyhurst University. He coordinates the piano area, the Faculty Recital Series, and the Roche Guest Artist Series. In 2018 he received an award for excellence in faculty scholarship. For nine summers he taught on the faculty at Rocky Ridge Music Center in Estes Park, Colorado. He can be heard on the Centaur label in a recording with flutist Susan Royal and in a recording of Bach arias produced by the International Trumpet Guild. Chelsea Nelson is a native of Erie, PA. She is happily returning to Erie after a decade of pursuing a music career performing and teaching in several major cities in the United States. Her first entry into the classical music scene was her studies at the Eastman School of Music where she studied with Peter Kurau and played in a myriad number of ensembles from orchestra, to operas, to film music ensembles and chamber music. After completing her bachelor's degree, she studied at Northwestern University with Gail Williams and Jon Boen. Whilst in Chicago, Chelsea had the opportunity to perform with the Northwestern University Symphonic Wind Ensemble and record Reflections in 2017. After graduating with her Master's degree, Chelsea moved to Texas, where she freelanced and performed with the Greenbriar Brass Quintet and several
Texas Orchestras including the San Antonio Symphony. Additionally, she maintained a studio of 50 private students. Chelsea is so pleased to be serving as an adjunct instructor of horn at Mercyhurst! Chinese American pianist Dr. Yiwen Zhang, graduated from the Peabody Conservatory of Music of The Johns Hopkins University with a Bachelor of Music Degree in Piano Performance. She completed her Master of Music at Boston Conservatory at Berklee in 2017. Recently, she received her Doctoral of Musical Arts in Piano Performance at West Virginia University. She has studied with Dr. Peter Amstutz, Dr. Lucy Mauro, Jung-ja Kim, Benjamin Pasternack, and Dr. Min Kim. Dr. Zhang is active as both a solo performer and collaborator. As a soloist, she was the winner of the Young Artist Concerto Competition at West Virginia University in 2018. She performed with the West Virginia University Symphony Orchestra in the US and Alicante Philharmonic Orchestra in Italy. As a collaborator, she was the founder of the Yis Piano Duo. The Yis Duo won the Pittsburgh Concert Society Major Artist Audition in the Chamber Category in 2019. They also received 3rd Place at MTNA – Stecher and Horowitz Two Piano Competition, and 2nd Prize in the Graduate Division of The ChaMP Competition in the same year. Moreover, at the West Virginia University, Dr. Zhang was awarded a Graduate Assistantship for choral accompanying. She worked with the WVU Women's Choir, Men's Choir, Community Choir and Vox Principalis. Currently, she serves as adjunct faculty in collaborative piano at Mercyhurst University, and as a senior teacher in the Community Music Program at West Virginia University.
