Ironwood offers both K-12 schooling and Gogebic Community College career preparation. Aspirus Hospital and Clinics, together with the Gogebic Range Health Foundation, actively support community wellness activities through strong event involvement and sponsorship. TOGETHER WITH TALENT Awkward Stage Drama Club Theatre North play O utside Ironwood has skiing, biking, fishing, & hiking, but INSIDE Ironwood has a 100-year performing arts history, embracing dance, music, and theatre. With two dance companies, two theater groups, the Gogebic Range Concert Band, the Chamber Singers community choir, and many small bands & ensembles, Ironwood is proud to present itself to visitors and new residents as the Western U.P.’s center for the performing arts. Founded in 1964, Theatre North is among the three oldest continuously operating community theatres in the United States, producing 3-4 major plays each year— from “Momma Mia” & “Oliver” to “A Streetcar Named Desire”. Youth and Children’s Claudettes Christmas show Theatre is also a vital part of the Ironwood drama tradition, with the lively stage- struck kids of the Awkward Stage Drama Club performing on either the Theatre North or Ironwood Theatre stages. F or the visual artist, living in the truly breathtaking and powerful natural landscape of Lake Superior, Ottawa National Forest, and white-water streams and waterfalls provides limitless inspiration. While centered at the Downtown Art Place Gallery and Studios, many artists have country studios as well. Major exhibits also utilize the Historic Ironwood Theatre Concourse and Ironwood’s Memorial Building. In Summer, art moves outside with the annual Art in the Min- er’s Memorial Heritage park presentations. Landscape-in- tegrated art compositions and themes become a central el- ement of the many Miners Park trails. In 2021, Art in the Miner’s Park will be a featured element in the Emberlight Fes- ART FOR ALL tival of the Arts, from August 26th until September 3rd. Many of the art works will be in place both before and after the Em- berlight Festival, presenting a great opportunity to both hike Art classes at DAP Classroom the trails in the Miner’s Park and interact with the art as well. FRESH AIR & WIDE-OPEN SPACES J ust Northeast of Ironwood lies the Black River National Forest Service Scenic Byway (Black River Road) which features five beautiful waterfalls. The walking trails to the falls from the roadside parking areas range from 1/8th mile to 3/4th mile, with Potawatomi Falls being barrier-free, and including a site restroom. Access and parking to three of these waterfalls is easy, with paved trails and constructed wooden overlooks that are ideal for sight-seeing and picture taking. Summer Waterfalls on the Black River The Miner’s Memorial Heritage Park encompasses the former iron ore mining locations within the City of Ironwood. Interpretive signs and works of art along the non-motorized trails inform visitors of the buildings and mine shafts that for many decades were the economic heart of Ironwood.
