This year, we have been building on this work to reach new audiences; having conversations with local communities which explore the stories from the people and places situated outside the town, and which uncover Guildford Borough’s wider rural history and identity. We have been taking objects from Guildford Museum out into the parishes to participate in local events, build links and partnerships with museums, village halls, societies and local groups - as well as individuals across the borough. Revealing the unique character and features of their parishes, the partners of the project invite you to celebrate their relationships with the places they live in, and to have a glimpse into their past and present days. rd 4 February - 23 March 2019 Guildfo m Free entry Museu Last year, Guildford Museum led a successful community based project entitled ‘Your Stories, Your Museum’, which engaged local For more information about the outreach people, organisations and community groups project contact the Engagement Officer at with the life, work and future of Guildford Heritage Services Museum. Exhibitions The Great War 1914-1919 The Last Casualties, Armistice and the end of the war, 1918 or 1919? Someone will always be the last person to die in any war: the poet Wilfred Owen (Manchester Regiment) was killed exactly one week before the fighting stopped. But what about the last fatalities from the Surrey Regiments? Surrey Infantry Museum presents an exhibition that looks into the stories of some ordinary men who ‘nearly made it’. After four years and three months of conflict the world had been changed forever: thousands of men in the battalions of the Queen’s Royal West and East Surrey Regiments were still in service across the globe. SIM investigates how their world changed at 11am on the eleventh of November 1918. It is not unusual to find war memorials across the county in churchyards, villages and towns bearing the inscription The Great War 1914-1919. Why 1919 when we are taught that the war ended in 1918? The final element of SIM’s World War I exhibition aims to provide some answers. 10 November - rd 19 January 2019 Guildfo m M u s e u Free entry 8 For more information and to book tickets call 01483 444751 or email heritageservices@guildford.gov.uk
