PARTNERS' HANDBOOK 2020 - 2021 - Westcott House
WELCOME TO WESTCOTT
HOUSE
This handbook aims to provide a useful basic introduction to Westcott House
(Part I) and practical information for Cambridge (Part II).

Each year the community changes as people leave, return or arrive. As a
partner, you are welcome to be involved in much of life at Westcott House and
your presence will shape the character of the community as it forms in the
year ahead.

There will be various events specifically for partners during the year, as well as
during the induction period. Partners’ events are intended to provide a chance
for us to get to know each other and support one another through what can be
a challenging time. While get-togethers are generally geared towards partners,
they tend to have a social bias and we welcome ordinands and children to join
in.

Welcome – we are glad you’re here and are looking forward to getting to know
you!

PARTNERS' HANDBOOK 2020 - 2021 - Westcott House
INTRODUCTION
At Westcott, a much-valued feature is that partners and families of those in
training are welcomed as fully-fledged members of the Westcott community.
There are many different types of partner in the community. Some choose to
live at Westcott (e.g. in All Saints Flats), others live in accommodation in
Cambridge, while others live outside of Cambridge. Partners vary in the extent
they get involved in Westcott life.

This Handbook is for all partners of Westcott students,
regardless of an individual’s situation. We believe in
providing for everyone to the extent possible.

The Handbook is kept up-to-date; see
https://www.westcott.cam.ac.uk/partners-and-families for the current version.
This site also includes useful information for partners and families.

This Handbook should be read in conjunction with Westcott
House’s two COVID-19 documents: Life Together in
COVID-19 and COVID-19 Community Compact and
                    Core Messages.
Please check for new COVID-19 updates.

                                                                                4
KEY INFO FOR LIFE AS A PARTNER AT WESTCOTT1
1. LIVING ARRANGEMENTS IN THE HOUSE AND SUBSISTENCE
KEYS FOR PARTNERS/FAMILIES: Partners are entitled to a general access key to open
the front and back gates of Westcott and various doors within. If you have not been given a
key and would like one please email the Domestic Bursar Emma Jeeves
(eeb34@hermes.cam.ac.uk) or reception (info@westcott.cam.ac.uk).
Please note that reception and other Westcott offices in C-Block must only be accessed by
advance appointment. Please refer to Life Together in COVID-19 for information on
Security and Movement in Westcott House in the context of COVID-19 including access
and one-way system. Some important points to highlight are:
       • the Main Gate must be kept closed and locked
       • the Car Park Gate must be kept closed between 9am and 5pm, and locked outside
           those hours
       • if you are not a resident in New Court, and do not need to use the car park, please
do not cut through New Court to enter or exit the site
       • if you are not a resident in Old Court, please do not use the Main Gate to enter or
           exit the site

ACCOMMODATION: The Westcott House College Handbook, provided to all students,
contains a detailed and very useful section on accommodation. If a partner wishes to have
a key to the House and Common Room, this can be requested by sending an email to the
Domestic Bursar eeb34@hermes.cam.ac.uk or staff in the Westcott office.

ACCESSIBILITY: Step-free access to New Court Flats, Chapel and Library is via the car
park gate on Manor Street. A ramp can be made available for D-block where there is a
toilet. Step-free access to the Common Room and Dining Room is via the main door on
Jesus Lane.

PARTNER/FAMILY MEALS AND MEAL ENTITLEMENT: Please note that the entitlement
to meals for partners and families depends on the type of financial support provided by the
student’s Diocese; for example, the entitlement does not apply to weekly boarders. If you
are unsure, please check with the relevant Diocese and/or the Westcott office. If you are
entitled to partner/family meals, you are entitled to 11 meals per week, from catering in the
Hall, to use between you as you decide. This includes breakfast and cannot be carried
forward into the next week. You will have one meal allowance rebated due to catering limits
under the current COVID-19 restrictions (Please refer to Life Together During COVID-
19). Meals for children under 5 are not counted in this allowance, and those for children
aged between 5 and 12 count as half. You are welcome to take meals in addition to your
allowance; you will be charged at the guest rate for those meals.2 Please remember to sign
guests in. Partners and children are welcome to join in with community meals, which take

delivered to the ordinand’s pigeonhole. For courier services please provide them with your
phone number. Please see the Westcott House College Handbook and Life Together
in COVID-19 for details on Mail.

CAR PARKING: A parking permit is required to park in the Westcott car park. Permits are: (i)
£66.67/term or £200 per year (permitted to park at any time); (ii) £31.67/term or £95 per
year (permitted to park between 6pm and 8am and all day on Saturdays/Sundays); (iii)
visitor’s permit: £15.00 for up to 5 hours (weekdays), £20.00 per day (week days) or £10
per day (weekends). Please request such a permit from the lovely people in the Westcott
office (Reception) by contacting them at info@westcott.cam.ac.uk. Permits must be
displayed at all times.

We have also acquired car parking spaces at Westminster College for students and staff. A
limited number of which will be available at the following costs of £35.00 per month, £8.50
per week or £2.00 per day.

For security reasons (and to deter the unwanted visitor) it is vitally important that the car
park gate be kept closed at all times. Please ensure that you do this when entering
and leaving the car park. The padlock should be locked between 6 pm and 7am and at all
times at weekends to make the site more secure.

PARENTS AT WESTCOTT WITH CHILDREN: There is a Children’s Rep that represents
children’s matters to the House and organises Westcott House children’s activities and
worship. Parents can refer to the Children’s Handbook that will be distributed during
Induction week. Parents meet regularly to discuss issues of common concern and interest.
The courtyard in New Court is available for children to play in. Any small freestanding toys
or small play equipment should not be left in the court when not in use and the path should
be kept clear as this poses a health and safety hazard. All such toys and equipment must
be cleared away and placed in the provided storage box or in the space beside it at the end
                                                                                              6
of each day. The Children’s Rep can provide information about other activities for children
in Cambridge, in church and outside.

LAUNDRY: If you live on site, the laundry room is in the A-block basement. In order to use
the laundry room you must book a timeslot in the laundry booking system which will be
shared with you by the Senior Student. The booking system is managed by the Common
Room. A wash costs £1.20 but bring your own detergent. The dryers cost 20p per ten
minutes, usually costing around 60p to fully dry a load (the large dryer opposite the door is
the quickest). There is also a rotary washing line in New Court for shared use.

2. SOCIAL LIFE AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR LEARNING
COMMON ROOM: All students and Tutorial Staff are members of the Common Room and
pay a small subscription. Partners, Associate Members, and other members of Staff are
also welcome and are eligible to join the Common Room upon payment of a small
subscription. The Common Room exists to discuss House matters particularly affecting the
Community, to make decisions in Common Room meetings, and to be the social focus of
College life. You are welcome to use the Common Room at any time provided you are
following Wescott House COVID-19 measurements and government regulations (e.g.
rule of 6). You can choose to become a member of the Common Room by paying a
subscription which funds upkeep, events and facilities (this year 2020-21 it is £15 for
partners). Membership entitles you to vote in Common Room elections and use the various
equipment and facilities paid for by the community. The Common Room also contains the
bar, which normally opens Monday-Wednesday 8:30-11:00pm, and Thursday 6:30-8:30pm.
Partners are welcome to use the bar, and to participate in any events held there. Please
note that COVID-19 restrictions have meant a change to the way the bar is run. This
will be detailed during Induction.

COMMUNITY NIGHT AND COMMUNITY NOTICES: Every Thursday at 5:30pm in Term, the
whole community will meet for worship online on Zoom, followed by Community Notices.

ALL SAINTS COURT VEGETABLE GARDEN: For partners with green fingers (or wanting
theirs to become greener), a Community-run vegetable garden is found in All Saints Court.
Volunteers are always welcome. Contact one of the Partners’ reps.

SOCIAL AND INFORMATIONAL EVENTS: A programme of social and informational
events is arranged for the partners of those in training at Westcott. The activities are co-
ordinated by the Partners’ Reps who represent all partners (whether resident at Westcott or
not) on the Common Room Committee. Depending on partners’ wishes, events may also
be arranged in places other than Cambridge. Notices are sent weekly by email so you can
keep up with everything that is going on in and around life at Westcott.

ATTENDING TALKS/AUDITING LECTURES: Partners are welcome to attend public
talks/discussion groups at Westcott. Partners may also choose to audit some academic
lectures in or outside of Westcott at their own cost. Details about how to register to audit a
                                                                                                 7
course are available online and will also be communicated early in the Michaelmas Term.
Partners should discuss this with their student partner and will need to fill in a form to
register. Please note: registering to audit is a commitment to attending an academic
course. Even if the course is not attended, the student/partner will still be liable for any audit
fee.

OPPORTUNITIES TO PARTICIPATE IN WESTCOTT SOCIAL/SPIRITUAL LIFE: Partners are
welcome to take as full a part as they wish in the life of the community, whether this be
worship, assisting as a server or reader, or simply to enjoy the social activities and the
beautiful grounds. Volunteers are always welcome – please feel free to contact the
organiser or, if you are unsure of whom to contact, ask the friendly Partners’ Reps.

SPORT: Sporting activities are coordinated by the Sports Rep, including the annual football
and cricket matches against Ridley Hall. Previous members of the community have also run
groups including running, high-intensity interval training (HIIT), football and pilates, and new
groups are always welcome. There is a collection of sports equipment stored in the
Common Room including equipment for croquet, tennis, squash, football and cricket, all
available for use by Westcott members. Check out the Westcott Facebook page or weekly
email notices for any sports that will be run this year.

3. PARTNERS WORKING FROM HOME

Partners working from home needing a non-home working place: there are
a variety of places to hot-desk in Cambridge, including the Central Library. See
https://www.lenkakoppova.com/top-5-best-co-working-places-cambridge/ for an updated
list. Please note some of these spaces are no longer accessible under the new
COVID-19 measures.

4. OPPORTUNITIES FOR PARTNERS TO DISCUSS ISSUES AND SEEK ADVICE
PARTNERS’ REPS: Being the partner of a Westcott student can be challenging at times.
The two Partners' Reps are available to give advice as well as to raise matters of interest to
partners with the governing body. These two representatives are chosen each year from
the student body and partners, with all partners having a free vote.
PARTNERS’ DISCUSSION FORA: In addition to the partners’ reps, there are two
opportunities per term to get together as partners and with members of Westcott
management to discuss questions or issues of concern. The first of these fora takes place
near the beginning of each term and the second takes place mid-way through the term.
The dates for each are communicated to partners in advance.

                                                                                                 8
5. WORSHIP AT WESTCOTT (THE DAILY OFFICE)

colleges within the Cambridge Theological Federation gather together taking turns to lead

and in the weekly notice email).

Please check Westcott weekly emails or the Facebook page for specific dates and times
regarding any children’s activities, or please consult the Children’s rep for more information.

6. CHOIR/CHAPEL MUSIC
The Choir is open to all singers and sings principally at the Thursday Community Worship.
Despite COVID-19 restrictions our Director of Music has a number of creative ways to bring
song to the Community Worship and all partners are welcome to be involved. Speak to the
Director of Music if you are interested.

PART II – PRACTICAL INFORMATION ABOUT
              CAMBRIDGE

                                        13
LOCAL INFORMATION
Cambridge is a very transient city and can take some time to get used to. During term time
it is very busy with students and out of term time it is very popular with tourists, so always
feels quite a bustling place. It has historical and cultural activities in abundance but also has
all the conveniences of modern-day life with plenty of restaurants, shops and supermarkets
close to hand.

TRANSPORT
Cambridge is small and flat so many people choose to walk or cycle everywhere. It is worth
investing in a good lock if you choose to cycle as bikes are a common target for Cambridge
thieves.

Public transport is not cheap, but ‘Citi’ buses are very regular and cover most places you
may wish to go. The bus station is on Drummers Street, just the other side of Christ’s
Pieces. The most direct route to Addenbrookes Hospital is on Busway ‘A’, which you can
catch from New Square (CB1 1EY).

Cambridge Train station (CB1 2JW) is a 20-25min walk or 10min cycle from Westcott.
Trains to London are frequent, with fast trains (c.45min to Kings Cross / 1hr 10min to
Liverpool St) every 30 minutes. It is usually quicker to wait for one of these than take the
slowest train (c.1hr 30min).

Taxis are relatively expensive in Cambridge. Panther Taxis is the largest company (01223
715715) and Cam Cab (01223 704704) are also reliable. A taxi rank is located next to the
bus station on Drummer Street. Uber also operates in Cambridge, with a fare from
Westcott to the station costing in the region of £6-8.

HEALTHCARE
Many people who live in Westcott use the Bridge Street Medical Practice, 2 All Saints
Passage Cambridge CB2 3LS. To find your nearest GP office and dentist you can search
online: http://www.nhs.uk

The nearest A&E is Addenbrookes Hospital, Hills Road, CB2 0QQ.

The nearest pharmacies to Westcott are Superdrug and Boots, both on Sidney Street (less
than 5 min walk). The only late-night pharmacy is Boots at Cambridge Retail Park (320
Newmarket Rd, Cambridge CB5 8WR), approximately 5-10 min drive away.

SUPERMARKETS
Please check opening times as these may have changed.

The nearest supermarket to Westcott is Sainsburys, Sidney Street CB2 3HX which is like a
large Sainsbury's Local. There is no parking or petrol station. Opening times are Monday to
Saturday 7.30am-11.30pm, Sunday 11.00am-5.00pm

                                                                                               14
There are also various small food stores nearby, including M&S Food (5 Market Hill CB2
3NJ), Little Waitrose (6-8 Fitzroy St, Cambridge CB1 1EW) and a Sainsbury's Local (52-54
St Andrew's St, Cambridge CB2 3AH), plus various stalls in Market Hill (often called Market
Square).

Larger supermarkets around Cambridge include:
   • Tesco Newmarket Road CB5 8LD, Monday to Saturday
7.30am-10.00pm, Sunday 11.00am-5.00pm. No petrol station.
   • Sainsburys Eddington Avenue CB3 1SE, Monday to Saturday
7.30am-10.00pm, Sunday 10.00am-4.00pm. No petrol station.
   • Asda Cambridge Superstore CB1 3ER (in the Beehive Centre),
opening times Monday to Friday 6.00am-12 midnight,
Saturday 6.00am-10.00pm, Sunday 10.00am-4.00pm. No petrol station.
   • Aldi, Histon Road CB4 3JB. Open 8am-10pm Monday to Saturday, 10am-4pm on
Sunday. There is an Esso petrol station next door.

Most supermarkets deliver in Cambridge including to Westcott House, although it’s best to
add directions to Manor Street for the car park and your phone number in case of any
confusion.

SHOPPING
Central Cambridge has most of the usual high street shops, John Lewis, a good range of
independent retailers plus the market. There are two shopping centres a short walk from
Westcott House: the Grand Arcade and Lion’s Yard in the centre of town, and the Grafton
Centre a 5-10min walk east of Westcott. There are plenty of charity shops around the
Grafton Centre including ones specialising in furniture.

Cambridge has two out-of-town retail parks near Newmarket Road (A1134): Cambridge
Retail Park (Newmarket Road CB5 8WR) and the Beehive Centre (Coldhams Lane CB1
3ET). Both have free parking and a variety of clothing, DIY and homeware stores.

FITNESS
There are a wide variety of sport facilities and swimming pools located around the city to
suit adults and children alike. See https://www.cambridge.gov.uk/sport-and-fitness or the
governing bodies for particular sports of interest.

LIBRARY
Cambridge Central Library (7 Lion Yard CB2 3QD,

There are many churches of different denominations in Cambridge and many colleges have
chapels with regular Sunday services. Some partners choose to follow their ordinands to
their placement church or chapel, while for various reasons others choose to find an
alternative spiritual home of their own. Feel free to chat to students, partners or staff to get
an idea of where you might feel most at home.

Synagogue services take place at 3 Thompson's Lane CB5 8AQ (Orthodox); and Auckland
Road, Cambridge. CB5 8DW (reform).

Cambridge has two mosques: Abu Bakr Jamia Mosque, Mawson Road CB1 2DZ; and

Playgrounds: There are many green spaces and parks in and around Cambridge. The
nearest playground is a small play area on Christ’s Pieces (behind King Street, approx. 3
mins from Westcott). A larger pirate-themed play area and skate park can be found on
Jesus Green, next to the river. Many other small playgrounds are dotted around the city. In
the summer, Lammas Land and Abbey Splash Pad are particularly popular.
