EUROPEAN SEMINAR ON SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE AND LAND USE (EURO-AGROLAND 2015) 1. – 2. June 2015 in Nitra, Slovakia EUROPEAN SEMINAR ON SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE AND LAND USE (EURO-AGROLAND 2015) 1. – 2. June 2015 in Nitra, Slovakia CALL FOR PAPERS 1
EUROPEAN SEMINAR ON SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE AND LAND USE (EURO-AGROLAND 2015) 1. – 2. June 2015 in Nitra, Slovakia BACKGROUND The agriculture sector is one of the key sectors of the European economy. But in order to succeed and ensure its long term viability in respect of nature protection and environmental quality, agriculture and land use practices need to be sustainable. But even though sustainability in agriculture and in land use are very important, there is a paucity of scientific events specifically devoted to this theme. Therefore, the “European Seminar on Sustainable Agriculture and Land Use” (EURO-AGROLAND 2015) is being organised, as joint initiative of the Slovak University of Agriculture in Nitra (Slovakia) and the Hamburg University of applied Sciences (Germany). The event will focus on “integrative approaches to sustainable agriculture and land use”, and will contribute to the further development of this fast-growing field. The city of Nitra is approximately 90 km from Bratislava and around 140 km from Vienna. International delegates are recommended to use the airports in Vienna or Bratislava, in order to reach Nitra more rapidly. AIMS The aims of EURO-AGROLAND 2015 are as follows: I. to provide universities and researchers with an opportunity to present their works in the field of sustainable agriculture and land use; II. to foster the exchange of information, ideas and experiences acquired in the execution of their own research and projects on sustainable agriculture and land use, showing successful initiatives and good practice; III. to discuss methodological approaches and projects which aim to integrate the topic of sustainable development more closely to agriculture and land use; VI. to network the participants and provide a platform so they can explore possibilities for cooperation. Last but not least, a further aim of the event will be to document and disseminate the wealth of experiences available today. To this purpose, a special issue of the "International Journal of Agricultural Resources, Governance and Ecology" which is a fully indexed journal (http://www.inderscience.com/jhome.php?jcode=ijarge#issue) with impact fact 0.853 will be published, with all accepted papers. The special issue will document and disseminate the excellent works performed by the authors and speakers attending the event. PROFILE OF PARTICIPANTS Delegates attending EURO-AGROLAND 2015 will come from a cross-sectoral range of areas. They are: I. teaching staff and research staff at agriculture research centres and universities; II. project officers and consultants in enterprises III. PhD students working in sustainable agriculture and land use; VI. other people interested in the field. It is believed that this wide range of participants will help to outline the need for integrated approaches towards sustainable development in agriculture and land use, and, hence contribute to the further dissemination of best practice in this field. 2

EUROPEAN SEMINAR ON SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE AND LAND USE (EURO-AGROLAND 2015) 1. – 2. June 2015 in Nitra, Slovakia SAMPLE ABSTRACT Some developments on sustainable agriculture in Europe Prof. Walter Leal (BSc, PhD, DSc, DPhil, DL, DLitt) Hamburg University of Applied Sciences, Lohbrügger Kirchstr. 65 D-21033 Hamburg Germany E-Mail: walter.leal@haw-hamburg.de Abstract The implementation of sustainable development principles in agriculture is a global trend. In Europe, there are many efforts aimed at making agriculture more sustainable. Yet, the intensity and the depth with which the agriculture sector is engaged with sustainability efforts, significantly differs. This paper presents an analysis about how European institutions working in the agriculture sector are including sustainability issues in their areas of activities. A special emphasis is given to the problems and barriers which prevent the integration of sustainability components in agriculture. Finally, some concrete steps which may be undertaken in order to allow the agriculture sector to better integrate sustainable development considerations in their activities, are outlined. This paper will be useful to anyone interested in the different levels of emphasis given to sustainable development in agriculture across Europe today. 7
