University Strategic Initiatives The Director of Development, University Strategic Initiatives, holds the primary responsibility for planning and executing Development strategies for University-wide initiatives that fall outside a College/School purview or include significant donors with whom the President engages. Building on the recent increase in and gifts to Howard, the Director will proactively coordinate engagement and stewardship for the University’s most significant donors. Working closely with the Office of the President and the Vice President for Development and Alumni Relations, the Director will ensure that cultivation and stewardship plans are well developed, carefully coordinated, and rigorously enacted. Key Position Functions The Director of Development, University Strategic Initiatives will: • Lead fundraising planning and management of major and leadership giving for university-wide programs and initiatives, especially those involving the President. • Serve as the strategic partner to Development and Alumni Relation’s colleagues by providing timely updates and recommendations on university-wide programs and initiatives. • Act as the subject matter expert on emerging priorities across all schools/units, keeping Development and Alumni Relations leaders informed and elevating high-impact stories. • Conceptualize, implement, and manage engagement initiatives that enhance and support fundraising priorities for the University. • Coordinate the cultivation-solicitation-stewardship cycle of significant University prospects and donors, ensuring all relevant parties understand plans and timetables. • Develop enhanced stewardship strategies for significant donors and coordinate engagement actions with the appropriate office (President, Dean, etc.) and Development and Alumni Relations. • Assist with developing complex proposals for soliciting individual, corporate, or foundation prospects, using knowledge from varied sources to ensure they are accurate and complete. • Produce strategy and meeting reports to capture a detailed history of donor engagement effectiveness. The Candidate Education and Experience: • Bachelor’s degree required. • 7 years of development experience, with at least 3 years of personal solicitation of individual major gifts. • Experience with an HBCU preferred. Knowledge, Skill, and Abilities: • Experience in managing relationships with high-level prospects to secure transformational gifts; experience supporting a college president preferred. • Mastery of the fundamentals of major gifts fundraising and moves management. • Understanding of planned giving concepts and experience with securing complex gifts, including navigating internal processes and working with wealth advisors. • Superior written and oral communication; exceptional interpersonal and relationship-building skills. • Creative problem-solving skills and the ability to initiate and collaborate with internal and external partners. • Ability to work independently and interdependently to achieve goals. • Experience utilizing fundraising database programs; experience with Raiser’s Edge preferred. • Commitment to the mission and vision of Howard University.
