Welcome message from Tim Joss, the Chief Executive and Founder Thank you for your interest in Aesop and the role of Head of Aesop Services. Aesop is an ambitious organisation that has grown rapidly since professionalising in 2014. Our vision is for a future when arts solutions for society’s problems are valued and available for all who need them. Our current focus is on arts solutions to major health challenges. We now want to recruit a Head of Aesop Services to lead on the successful delivery of all our projects and services, including quality assurance, evaluation, and development. The main current services are Dance to Health, a falls prevention dance programme for older people, and the Aesop Institute professional development programme for health and arts professionals wanting to deliver successful arts-and-health programmes. The successful candidate will have experience of programme planning, successful delivery and monitoring and evaluation. They will need to provide evidence of their ability to review relevant research to develop evidence-based programmes and develop strong relationships with a range of stakeholders, including funders. The successful candidate will be able to identify and develop new projects in addition to building strategies to help deliver Aesop’s current aims. They will work closely with the new post of Head of Business and Marketing, and me, to develop Aesop’s offer further. Aesop currently has 10 employees, 6 trustees and 300 volunteers. Aesop funders currently include Arts Council England, Birmingham City Council, John Ellerman Foundation, Paul Hamlyn Foundation and Peter Sowerby Foundation. Strategy and our 5-year plan The 5-year plan 2019 – 2025 has four broad aims from which a number of KPIs have been drawn. Aims 2019-2025 Show health, Develop Develop arts care and solutions Accelerate research and other sectors the pace of practice based on how the arts social needs adoption of networks for can work for arts solutions arts solutions them These aims are realised through the following programmes: Arts solutions: ▪ Dance to Health aims to be the first arts programme which goes to scale in the health system. It addresses older people’s falls and problems with current provision. A £2.1 million programme [2017-19] confirmed it is effective and cost-effective for the health system. The next phase [2020- 25] takes Dance to Health online. Many more local groups and a randomised controlled trial are planned. Engaging the health and social care sector: ▪ Arts-and-health Conferences/showcases for health decision-makers. The next event will be presented in partnership with the Southbank Centre. ▪ Annual surveys of GP attitudes to the arts. Accelerate the pace of adoption of arts solutions: ▪ Chrysalis (in development) – a venture philanthropy fund to help scale promising arts and health programmes. Research and practice networks: ▪ 1st project linking arts and health economics – with the LSE and DCMS. ▪ 1st arts in health evaluation framework, commissioned by Public Health England and downloaded over 3,600 times. ▪ ‘Active Ingredients’ project studies how arts programmes actually work – their artistic active ingredients – and how to increase their social impact. ▪ Action learning set for arts organisations already funded by health. ▪ ‘Aesop Institute’, university-accredited training developed and run with Canterbury Christ Church University. 4
Governance & Finance: Aesop is a company limited by guarantee with charitable status. It is chaired by Professor Kevin Fenton, Public Health England Regional Director, London. Registered in 2009, it was volunteer-run until 2014. Since professionalising, income has risen from £78,390 (2014/15) to £863,665 (2018/19). 5

Job Description & Person Specification: Job Description Job title: Head of Aesop Services Responsible to: Chief Executive & Founder Responsible for: Project delivery staff Job purpose: To lead and be responsible for the successful delivery of all Aesop’s services and programmes, their quality assurance, evaluation and development. Salary: £42,500 to £47,500 Location: Witney, Oxfordshire Full/part-time: Full-time Duties 1. Ensure the ethos of Aesop is reflected in all its programmes and services: ▪ Commitment to realising the full power of the arts to help address challenges in people’s daily lives. ▪ Inclusivity, equality and diversity. ▪ Customer care. ▪ Celebration of people’s creativity. ▪ Commitment to social enterprise. ▪ Professionalism. 2. Provide leadership to develop this ethos within the team and strong staff leadership across Aesop. 3. Serve as a member of the Aesop Management Team: ▪ Work within the framework of Aesop’s Five-Year Plan 2019-25. ▪ Contribute to Aesop strategy, implementation plans and budgets. ▪ Report quarterly to the Board. ▪ Attend as required Board discussions of Aesop’s services and programmes. 4. Lead on the delivery, evaluation, quality assurance and risk management of established Aesop’s services: ▪ Aesop Institute professional development courses. ▪ Arts and health evaluation framework (with Public Health England). ▪ Arts Enterprises action learning set of leading arts-and-health programmes. 7
▪ Biennial national arts-and-health conferences and showcases for health decision-makers. ▪ Dance to Health. ▪ Surveys of GP attitudes to the arts. 5. Lead on research and development of Aesop services, both the established ones in 4 above and others at an earlier stage of development. Currently these are: ▪ Active Ingredients Project. ▪ Chrysalis – a venture philanthropy fund to help scale promising arts and health programmes. ▪ Online arts-and-health service for older people. 6. Working closely with the Chief Executive & Founder and Head of Business Development & Marketing to support the development of new projects and services. 7. Support the Chief Executive and Founder and Head of Business Development and Marketing with new income-generation and business development opportunities. 8. Lead on the recruitment and involvement of volunteers. 9. Nurture and maintain strong relationships with service participants and partners and other stakeholders relevant to Aesop’s services. ▪ Lead on the Dance to Health Participant Panel and its development. ▪ Work closely with the Chief Executive & Founder to ensure that Aesop develops key strategic relationships. ▪ Oversee and monitor partnership development across the organisation. ▪ Ensure Aesop has effective stewardship processes in place to nurture relationships with customers and partners. 10. Manage resources for Aesop’s services: ▪ Negotiating contracts with clients and subcontractors. ▪ Drafting policies and procedures. ▪ Provide both leadership and supervision of freelancers, consultants and volunteers. ▪ Ensure they are supported and inspired to deliver their objectives effectively. ▪ Budget monitoring and control. ▪ Work with Chief Executive & Founder to ensure processes and systems are effective. 11. Other activities to support Aesop that may be reasonably requested by the Chief Executive & Founder. 8
Person Specification Essential experience: ▪ Education to degree level. ▪ Programme planning and management in healthcare and/or the arts or the third sector. ▪ Knowledge and understanding of equality and diversity, what this means in relation to this post and the ability to incorporate this into all aspects of work. ▪ Budgeting and budget management. ▪ Professional development programmes. ▪ Contract negotiations. ▪ Reviewing relevant research to develop evidence-based programmes. ▪ Programme evaluation. ▪ Working with volunteers. ▪ Proven experience of motivating and managing individuals and teams effectively, including managing at a distance. ▪ Track record of contributing to corporate and cross organisational business strategy. Essential qualities: ▪ Commitment to the Aesop ethos backed by relevant experience. ▪ Superb organisational and IT skills and attention to detail. ▪ Ability to plan and prioritise workload and keep to targets and deadlines. ▪ First class verbal and written communication skills. ▪ Proven ability to deal with decision makers at all levels with tact and diplomacy. ▪ Excellent judgment and the ability to identify, analyse and manage risks. ▪ Excellent organisational and IT skills and superb attention to detail. ▪ A high level of integrity and discretion. ▪ Energy, positivity, and an inspiring nature. Other: ▪ The successful candidate will need to be a driver with access to a vehicle as this role may involve visiting the locations where Aesop programmes are being run. 9
