EQUINIX AND THE ENVIRONMENT Equinix and the Environment At Equinix, our purpose is to protect, connect and power the digital economy and we believe that it is important to do this in an environmentally sustainable way. We design, build and operate data centres with high energy efficiency standards. We have recently signed a power purchase agreement that will bring our total renewable energy coverage in North America to 100% by the end of 2016 and our long-term goal is to use 100% clean and renewable energy around the globe. We constantly evaluate the energy efficiency of our data centres and we are quick to adopt proven energy-saving technologies or techniques on a global scale. Some of the green technologies we have deployed globally include adaptive airflow control systems, ASHRAE thermal guidelines to optimise interior temperatures, cold/hot aisle containment, energy-efficient lighting systems and variable frequency drives in our HVAC systems. Equinix constantly adopts new energy-saving technologies like the indirect evaporative coolers at ME1 When we design our data centres, we utilise local conditions to further reduce our carbon footprint. For instance, the ME1 Melbourne IBX and SY4 Sydney IBX were designed with highly efficient indirect evaporative cooling units that take advantage of the climate and humidity. To help us conserve even more energy in the coming years, Equinix has adopted more aggressive regional power usage effectiveness (PUE) design targets for new sites as well as major expansions that meet the definition for PUE3 and represent an average incremental efficiency gain of 8% to 10%. Equinix, proud winner of the Frost & Sullivan Asia Pacific Data Center Green Innovation Leadership Award, strives to be respectful stewards of the environment, to invest in our communities and to improve the places where we live and work as well as those touched by the technology we enable. 10 | EQUINIX AND THE ENVIRONMENT
