‘Ad Vitam Paramus’ ‘We are Preparing for Life’. Equality Follow us on Twitter @westcravenhigh Friday 16 April 2021 We can be followed @WestCravenHighSchool “The earth is the mother of all people, and all people should have equal rights upon it.” Chief Joseph Key Messages I hope that this E-bulletin finds you and your family well. I was delighted to welcome back students in such positive spirits following the Easter break. They have started the summer term looking very smart in their uniform and proudly displaying our ASPIRE core values. We learned the sad news of the death of the Duke of Edinburgh. In school, Mr Christie led a thought provoking assembly on his contribution to the support and development of young people through the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme. He has transformed the way in which millions of young people see themselves and see the world around them. Launched in 1956, the “DofE” offers young people the chance to take on challenges, discover new skills and make a difference in their community. Congratulations to our latest cohort of bronze award winners, and I hope that this will inspire your child to sign up for the next round of the scheme. Please let Mr Wilson, Head of PE, know if you are interested or require more details. The start of the new term coincides with the start of the holy month of Ramadan. We wish Ramadan Mubarak to all our staff, families and followers who are celebrating this special month. Well done to everyone who entered our Easter bake off competition. Congratulations to Daisy, Bradley and Lottie, our top three winning bakers and to everyone else who participated. Please see all their amazing creations featured later in this E-bulletin. Congratulations also go to Scarlett and Grace in Year 8 who both completed trials for the Lancashire girls’ football team during the Easter break and have been selected for the U14s squad. Well done both, an amazing achievement and we all look forward to following your progress on the football field! As restrictions finally start to ease we are happy to be able to restart after school clubs and sporting activities. We have missed them badly! Please see the timetable of activities later in the E-bulletin. Year 11 are now half way through their mock examinations which will conclude next week. Practical assessments for GCSE art will take place on 11 and 14 May, and hospitality and catering on 19 May. There will be a virtual parents’ evening for Year 11 on Thursday 29 April, so save the date. Next week we will be hosting our Year 8 virtual parents’ evening on Thursday 22 April. Please click on the link to book your appointments with subject teachers if you haven’t already: https://westcraven.schoolcloud.co.uk/ Please stay safe and as always do get in touch if I can help or support in any way. Students came up with some fantastic questions for Rebecca and found out all about her career journey from the Clitheroe Advertiser to the BBC and on to CNN, the biggest and most difficult stories she's worked on, the most dangerous places she's reported from, how she sees the journalism industry developing in the future, the most famous people she's met through work, the countries she'd like to return to and more. She also showed the students videos of some of the pieces she has produced for CNN. Further details will be included in our next newsletter.
Sport Lancashire Girls’ Football We are delighted to announce, that Year 8 students, Scarlett Leary and Grace Hindley have both been selected to play for Lancashire under 14s girls’ football team. Over the Easter break, the girls attended two days of trials at Clitheroe, where they played several matches throughout the selection process. 120 girls attended the selection process with only 23 places up for grabs. Both Scarlett and Grace are delighted to have been selected and they are both looking forward to their first match next week. Mr Wilson said, “This is an excellent achievement. The competition was of a very high quality which makes the achievement even more impressive”. Easter Bake-off The Easter bake-off competition had some amazing entries with winners from both Year 7 and 8. Mrs Whittle and Mrs Gardner were really impressed with the time and effort that students put in. Well done! Platinum Gold Silver Daisy Otterwell Bradley Wood Lottie Robinson

Wanted Your ideas for the library Book recommendations Your favourite authors, characters or quotes from books. Please email me – Mrs Boardman, School Librarian jboardman@westcraven.co.uk We are a Reading Academy A Reading Journey Students are back in the normality of the classroom, but reading certainly allows them to go far beyond it. Reading literature really can and does take us to new places and expand our understanding of them, and as a reading academy, we encourage this every day. In a Year 8 Accelerated Reader lesson this week, Zac was in Auschwitz with two young boys who found friendship against all the odds, while Shiraz was sharing in the glory of a winning goal on a football pitch, and Shannon was in somebody else’s living room viewing a different perspective on family life – but of course, we were all in the same classroom. As well as being a gateway to new places, reading also helps young people to understand moods, discuss emotions and be able to empathise with others. Our Year 7s have begun their whole-class reading journey for this half term with Uncle Montague’s Tales of Terror, by Chris Priestley. The book is an anthology of curious short stories and as part of their learning this week, the students have explored how writers use the weather to create a particular mood or emotion – a technique that they now know as ‘pathetic fallacy’. What weather would you associate with: A spooky wood? A love story? Friendship? An argument between two friends? A tragedy? Meanwhile, Year 9 students have journeyed back to the Jacobean era, and are getting to grips with the drama, the relationships, the gender power struggles, the revenge plots and the tragic downfall of the title character in Shakespeare’s Macbeth. Our Year 9 form groups have also joined Years 7 and 8 in our Robust Reading programme. Each form have been given a different novel to read together as a class each week. We can’t wait to hear and share their reviews. Reading quote of the week… “To learn to read is to light a fire; every syllable that is spelled out is a spark.” Victor Hugo Mrs Woodward Lead Practitioner in English
