WELCOME Hello and welcome to Christ Methodist Church Camp 2018! After recent camps in familiar Malacca, we look forward to a change of scenery at the tranquil AVANI Sepang Goldcoast Resort. We thank you for taking time off your busy schedules to join us. Whether you are looking forward to receiving new revelation from God, a time of soaking in God’s presence, fellowship with friends and family, or just to be refreshed from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, we are certain that God will bless this time that you have set aside for Him. This year, we are privileged to have Rev Edmund Chan bring the Word to us. Rev Edmund Chan is a Leadership Mentor at the Covenant Evangelical Free Church, Founder of the annual Intentional Disciple-making Church Conferences and serves on the advisory council of several Christian organisations. He graduated summa cum laude from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School with an MA(Missions). A seasoned disciple-making pastor, Rev Edmund Chan has authored various books on Disciple- making, Growth, Faith and Inner-Life. For the little ones, we have invited Mr David Leong, a much sought-after itinerant Children and Family Educator of more than 25 years to organise and facilitate a series of interactive and fun-filled activities for children between 7 and 12 years old. David will not be an unfamiliar face, having been invited to speak at ChristKidz Worship Service before. God is definitely moving in CMC, with GoNations in 2017, the opening of a third service in 2018 and a record attendance of over 600 at CMC Camp 2018! It is our prayer that every camper will have a personal encounter with God at camp this year and that every individual will leave camp with the insatiable desire to grow Deeper in God! DEVOTIONALS DAY 1 (4 JUN):WHOSE HOUSE ARE WE BUILDING? Scripture Reading: Haggai 1:2-9 Key Verse: “You expected much, but see, it turned out to be little. What you brought home, I blew away. Why?” declares the Lord Almighty. “Because of my house, which remains a ruin, while each of you is busy with his own house.” (Haggai 1:9) Upon return from their exile to Babylon, the people of Judah were greatly humbled and bore high hopes of Jerusalem. With praise and thanksgiving they sang to the Lord, and laid the foundation of the temple within two years. Their success aroused opposition from their neighbours and soon the construction came to a halt. Discouraged and derailed in focus, the rebuilding of the temple laid idle for sixteen years! “The time has not yet come for the Lord’s house to be built” (v2), the people said. Yet, they continued to busy themselves with building and sprucing up their own homes. The hope and passion for rebuilding God’s temple had fizzled. Constantly chasing after the things of the world, the Jews were caught in a cycle of “inadequacy” and “discontentment”. Haggai’s rebuke of the people was sharp and clear. Because they had neglected God, nothing would work right and there would be no satisfaction from what they sow. Discouragement and setbacks stop us in our tracks in serving God’s kingdom and we throw in the towel. “It will be done in God’s perfect timing”, or “I’m not spiritual enough” are convenient spiritual excuses that we make for ourselves. Like the Jews, we often succumb to the desires and temptations of this world, and set our priorities on our personal comfort and luxuries, what to eat, what to drink, what to wear. We get caught up in our own selfish concerns. Let not our riches and blessings become a stumbling block to the rebuilding of the Temple of the Holy Spirit. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Application: 1. What are you building/pursuing today? Are your pursuits aligned to God’s? 2. Pray alone or with someone to ask God for His help to free you from the worldly pursuits and to lead you to seek first His kingdom and righteousness. Page 13
DAY 2 (5 JUN):THIRST FOR THE LIVING GOD Scripture Reading: Psalm 42 Key Verses: As a deer pants for flowing streams, so pants my soul for you, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. (Psalm 42:1-2) What motivates our drawing near to God? Is it fear and guilt or a simply a pure longing for Him? I reckon for most of us, it is often the former. When was the last time you’ve experienced a deep longing and thirst to be in the presence of God, simply because He is God, the creator of the heavens and the earth, of all living creatures big and small, and of us men and women whom He has fashioned out of dust? The Psalmist writes in Psalm 42, that his soul pants for God exactly as how a thirsty deer pants for life- giving water. Imagine that you have just gone for a long and tiring run. There’s nothing you would desire more than to immediately quench your dry throat with water or a sports drink. The desire is primal. This imagery of the longing for life-giving streams invites us to consider just how powerful our spiritual thirst for God may become as we acknowledge Him as the sole giver of life. Do we long for God the way the Psalmist does? One obstacle to such desire is quenching our thirst for the divine with earthly things. Feeding on the temporal pursuits and pleasures of the world will never fully satisfy us and it will not be before long that we begin clamouring for something new. John 4:14 tells us that if we drink of the water that Jesus gives, we shall never thirst and indeed that water would become in us a spring of water welling up to eternal life. Let us learn to cultivate a deep longing for God today. Application: 1. How would I describe my desire for God each day? 2. What are some steps I need to take to cultivate a deeper desire for God? Page 14
DAY 3 (6 JUN): DRAW NEAR TO HIM Scripture Reading: James 4:1-12 Key Verse: Come near to God and He will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. (James 4:8) Our key verse today comes with a promise – God will draw near as we draw near. Yet at times of need and struggle, we may feel that God remains silent and gives us no explanations, directions or affirmations. We feel like He has abandoned and forgotten about us. Some of us may even feel anger towards God – that our loving Father in heaven has forsaken us! However, His silences reveal the condition of our hearts. Do we have to understand the details in order to believe a promise, or that we have to understand the reasons in order to obey Him? Dare we trust Him? If we trust Him, the need for details and reasons fade away - only our love and obedience to Him remains. Even when God appears to remain silent, press deeper, cling onto His word, spend even more time praying! Which earthly father would ignore the cries of his children? What more our Father in heaven? As you draw closer to Him, even in the silence, rest assured that our Father is with us, working within and shaping us to be more like Him. His ‘silences’ teach our hearts to be more sensitive and tuned in to His voice. For God is never truly silent. It is us who have difficulty hearing His voice. Ravi Zacharias once said, “The biggest battle you will face in life is your daily appointment with God. Keep it, or every other battle will become bigger.” As we go through each day, each struggle, and each decision in our lives, may we continue to grow deeper into Him. And as we come close to God, we claim the promise that He will come close to us. Application: 1. What do I need to trust God with today? 2. Recommit to God today – to spend time regularly with Him, reading His word, praying and soaking in His presence. Page 15
DAY 4 (7 JUN): SURRENDERED FAITH Scripture Reading: 1 Chronicles 4:9-10 Key Verses: Jabez was more honourable than his brothers; and his mother called his name Jabez, saying, “Because I bore him in pain.” Jabez called upon the God of Israel, saying, “Oh that You would bless me and enlarge my border, and that Your hand might be with me, and that You would keep me from harm so that it might not bring me pain!” And God granted what he asked. (1 Chronicles 4:9-10) Jabez was given a name that meant “pain” or “sorrowful”, as his mother had borne him in pain. Despite that, we understand that Jabez was more honourable than his brothers (v9). How did a man with such a name outlive the destiny that was foreboded on him? Jabez’s faith in God was evident as he called out to Him without hesitation. In his heart, he truly believed in God and was seeking after Him. Jabez recognized that God is sovereign and that God is the Provider for all things in his life, hence he asked for God’s blessings over his life. Jabez had done so with an attitude that was humble as he knew that God is real. Last but not the least, Jabez had asked for God to be with him and to protect him from harm. As he drew closer to God, He knew God would be there with him. This is a man whose name meant sorrowful, yet he was full of passion for God! When we are presented with a difficult situation or predicament, our natural inclination is usually to rely on our human wisdom and abilities to get ourselves out of it. However, that was not the course of action Jabez took. Instead of surrendering to the life of sorrow predicted over him, or attempting to strive hard on his own to ensure he would be free from pain and sorrow, his response was simply to place his trust in God. Jabez surrendered his life and well-being into God’s hands. The prayer of Jabez reminds us that all of us struggle with power and self-righteousness, because there are times when we choose to rely on ourselves instead of God. However, as we seek to draw closer to God, we need to learn to lean fully on God’s faithfulness and grace. Growing deeper in God requires a deeper surrender to Him. Application: 1. We often profess to have faith in God. Looking at the way I react to challenges, do my actions align with my belief? 2. What are some areas in my life that have yet to be surrendered to God? Page 16
