Summer Programs– Adventure, Discovery, Educational, and Entertainment American Legion Tarheel Boys State - The American Legion believes there is no better way to ensure the survival of our republic than to train our young people in the ideals and objectives of American government. By teaching youth to understand and appreciate the basic principles involved in the successful management of a democratic society, we can keep America strong and ensure freedom for future generations. These are the distinguished and long-standing objectives of American Legion Boys’ State. Eligibility: Rising Senior. Rising seniors from across the state spend a week creating city government, political parties, and a state government. They elect officials, write and debate bills, create working governments and attend various workshops to prepare them for their senior year and college. Unique aspects of MGSI • MGSI is a college residential experience. The program includes instruction on Appalachian State University’s campus in Boone, North Carolina. • Each MGSI cohort is small. Only 24 students are selected, providing an intimate, hands-on experience for each participant. • It is quite affordable: tuition is $1,000 plus a meal plan of $350. * **Need-based scholarships are available to qualified applicants to defray tuition costs. Which students are well suited for MGSI? • Students who have a sincere interest in business as a college major and demonstrate leadership potential. Some candidates have an entrepreneurial spirit or have extensive part-time work experience. Camp Cardiac and Camp Neuro, run by local medical students in over 30 cities nationwide, serve as an ideal introduction for any high school student interested in exploring a career in medicine. With a focus on both education and real-world experience, Camp Cardiac provides students with a unique opportunity to learn directly from experts in the medical field. In addition, this 1-week summer day camp provides a foundation for heart healthy living with an emphasis on both diet and exercise. Although Camp Cardiac’s primary focus is on care and maintenance of the heart, it provides an excellent starting point for careers in all fields of medicine. Eligibility: Open to all high school students (including Spring/Summer graduates) 15- 18years of age as of first day of assigned session and currently residing in the US. This program is designed to identify, recruit, educate and prepare high school students for careers in health professions. Discover Clemson University Rising 7th-12th grade students up to age 17 will enjoy this one-week introduction to college subjects while being immersed in the culture of Clemson University. Educational, recreational, and cultural activities allow participants to experience some of the amazing opportunities Clemson University has to offer. Students will engage in hands-on, immersive courses in their field of choice taught by Clemson instructors during the day. Afternoons include free time which can be spent exploring campus, attending a campus tour, or meeting a representative from Admissions or Calhoun Honors College. Evenings feature many of the recreational activities Clemson students enjoy, including bowling at The Underground, swimming at Fike Recreation Center, and a cookout on the beach at beautiful Lake Hartwell. As a volunteer, you will have the personal satisfaction of helping others. Our ideal volunteer candidate is someone who genuinely wants to serve others and make a difference in the daily lives of our patients, visitors and staff. Every assignment completed by a volunteer supports our efforts to provide exceptional care. Our ideal volunteer knows that there are no small tasks when it comes to serving others. July Experience 2020: Sunday, June 28 – Saturday, July 18 Join other students from across the United States and around the world and take two courses taught by full-time Davidson faculty, live in residence halls, attend workshops about the college admission process, and participate in Davidson traditions. Cost: $4000 Davidson College is committed to access and affordability. Scholarships and financial aid are available to students with financial need. A limited amount of aid is available and is awarded on the basis of academic achievement and need. The July Experience program is not funded by the Davidson Trust. The High Point Police Department and High Point University Youth Leadership Academy focuses on developing teens’ leadership skills and introducing them to avenues for community service. The students’ days are filled with meeting and learning from community leaders, completing leadership-building and team- building activities, and completing community service projects. If you’re the kind of student who would like to spend much of your summer learning as much hands-on math, science, and engineering as you can, you might be a good fit for MIT. Women's Technology Program - Massachusetts Institute of Technology The MIT Women's Technology Program (WTP) is a rigorous four-week summer academic and residential experience where high school female students explore engineering through hands-on classes, labs, and team-based projects in the summer after 11th grade. (current juniors). We especially encourage students to apply who will be the first family member to attend college, who come from high schools with limited access to STEM classes and activities, or who are from backgrounds historically underrepresented in STEM such as African American, Hispanic, or Native American. Note: Students who love and excel at math and science but have no prior experience (or very little) in engineering or computer science, should apply. The application deadline is January 15, 2020. There is no fee to apply to WTP. If you are accepted, there are scholarships for students based on family income to attend WTP for FREE. Cadets participate in morning physical training, close order drill, and disciplined conduct throughout the day under the watchful eyes of counselors and instructors. We want the Page Program to represent North Carolina’s diverse communities and help inspire a new generation of leaders. The program is designed to help students grow in four key areas: • Civics. Pages will see first-hand the three different branches of government and how they work together to serve the people of North Carolina. • History. Pages will learn about our shared history so that we can better understand the present. • Service. Pages will learn more about the importance of community and civil service, and the impact it has on our state. • Professional Development. Pages will develop skills needed for entering higher education or the workforce. Criteria Each applicant must be a North Carolina high school student in good academic standing between the ages of sixteen and eighteen years old. Pages are selected to serve for a term of four days. All Pages must abide by a Code of Conduct throughout their time in the program. Students can earn 40 hours of service learning. NC Senate Page Program - this program offers young men and women the opportunity to learn about and participate in the legislative process of our state. It is a week-long experience that allows high school students between the ages of 15 (or 14 if already in the 9th grade) and 18, to observe firsthand how our laws are made. It provides them the unique privilege of working on the Senate Chamber floor amid legislative action. For more information and to apply – please visit: https://www.ncleg.gov/Senate/PageProgram 2020 Veterinary Science Camps Camp sessions are taught by the North Carolina Zoo’s Veterinary staff in conjunction with counselors chosen from among the top students at North Carolina State University Veterinary School. These counselors remain with the campers throughout the program. There are two camps offered: 2020 Junior Veterinary Camps - rising 7th, 8th and 9th graders. This one-of-a-kind veterinary camp brings young people together to explore a future career in veterinary medicine. Campers spend time practicing several basic veterinarian procedures: giving physical exams, administering CPR, trying sutures, and such—and explores some of the specialized skills veterinarians use to care for wild animals in zoos. 2020 Senior Veterinary Camps - rising 10th - 12th graders, and for rising college freshmen. Summer Programs – Adventure, Discovery, Educational, and Entertainment cont. Oxbridge Academic Programs has been welcoming intellectually adventurous students to summer study programs since 1984. Professor James Basker designed these programs for students in grades 7-12 with the goal of giving them the opportunity to live and study in historic centers of learning. Today we offer programs in England, France, Spain, and the United States. Students choose two subjects in which to immerse themselves - a major and a minor - from a range of over 200 courses. Popular options include Medicine, Law, Business, and Psychology. For more information, cost, and dates; please visit: https://www.oxbridgeprograms.com/ The Princeton Summer Journalism Program (PSJP) The Princeton Summer Journalism Program (PSJP) is intended for low-income students with excellent academic achievement who are committed to pursuing a career in journalism. To qualify for the program, you must meet all of the following requirements. You must: ✓ Be a junior in high school at the time of application. Students apply in the winter-spring of their junior year and attend the program during the summer between junior and senior year. No exceptions will be made for students in any other grades. ✓ Live in the United States and intend to attend college here. Students living and attending school abroad, including U.S. citizens, will not be considered under any circumstances. ✓ Have a minimum unweighted grade point average of 3.5 out of 4.0. ✓ Have an interest in journalism. Meet at least one of the socioeconomic conditions below: ✓ The combined income of your custodial parent(s)/guardian(s) plus child support payments, if any, must not exceed $60,000. ✓ You qualify for free or reduced-price lunch in your high school. ✓ You qualify for an SAT or ACT fee waiver. PSJP assesses each students’ eligibility based on the composition and income of their family. Students who will be first-generation college students are given priority consideration. Rotary Youth Leadership Program (RYLP) Since 1983, Rotary and the Center for Creative Leadership have been hosting some of Central North Carolina’s top rising junior and senior high school students to the Rotary Youth Leadership Program at Guilford College - providing tomorrow’s leaders with the innovative problem-solving skills, experiences, and global perspectives to actively create change in the world. Leadership Camp is held in late July. Application opens early 2020. The Red Hat Shelton Challenge is a transformational six-day summer experience for rising 9th-12th grade students with a 3.0 unweighted grade-point average. The College of Textiles holds five one-week sessions of STEP each summer. Summer Programs for High School Students Tuskegee University offers a number of summer programs that benefit high school and incoming college students wishing to broaden their experience in their planned field of study and future careers. The AgriTREK/SciTREK Summer Institute and the AgDiscovery Summer Program are two popular programs for high school students hosted by CAENS and the Tuskegee Center for Advanced Materials and College of Engineering. Most programs are free or low cost and residential camps. Parents are responsible for transportation to and from camp. UPLIFT PLUS is a five-week residential program for Project Uplift participants. During the program, participants live on campus, attend SAT/ACT coaching sessions and take English 100 (3 credits). Williams College - Windows on Williams (WOW) gives high school seniors the opportunity to spend three all-expenses-paid days at Williams. WOW is a selective program open to high school students in the U.S. and Puerto Rico; preference is given to high-achieving students who couldn’t otherwise afford to visit Williams. WOW participants stay in dorms with current students, attend classes, meet with professors, and learn about our admission process and our extraordinary financial aid program.
