Pi Day Competition By Lorenzo Mcbean
Pi Day is celebrated on March 14th (3.14) around the world. Pi (Greek letter “π”) is the symbol used in mathematics to represent a
constant the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter — which is approximately 3.14159. Pi Day is an annual
opportunity for math enthusiasts to recite the infinite digits of Pi. According to our HUM III Pi Day Competition contestants, the
experience was ¨Fun, impressive, and nerve wracking." So I interviewed the contestants on how they prepared for the event and
here are their responses:
Ms Cryer: “I actually didn’t prepare a whole lot, but when I got there someone had the sheet so I stole it and memorized it really
fast. The Tuesday after there was a trivia (Trivia Tuesdays) and one of the questions was ‘What were the first 5 digits of pi?’ Since I
participated in Pi Day I got the question right.” (21 digits)
Ms Oborne: “So, 10 minutes before the competition I studied the numbers last minute. I memorized as many as I could to the tune
twinkle twinkle little star. Also, it was easier to memorize them in groups of 4. It was really impressive to see the two students
winners work hard to memorize the numbers.” (27 digits)
Taylor Freeman: "In Mr.Fitz's classroom we repeated the numbers over and over till it was stuck in my head. It was a fun
experience.” (41 digits)
Abou Dieng: “I studied a lot, and then the weekend prior to the event I reviewed it to make sure I knew it. It was fun but I was
really nervous and when I messed up.” (96 digits)

Arts in Our Schools Month By Alondra Barrales
In today’s modern world, we are always busy and constantly moving to the point we stress
out. As students, we are always stressing over our grades, our SAT’s, college, and our future.
Staff are stressed as well with their very busy schedules that they have to balance with their
own personal lives. We tend to be so busy that we forget about the beautiful things in life.
One way we can take our minds off of the constant anxiety of the world and its problems is
through the different forms of art, such as acting or painting. Our school had an event that
took place in the month of March called, “Arts In Our Schools.” In Room 378 Mr. Campbell,
the school’s art teacher, set down a big mural paper roll on the classroom floor to allow
students and staff to paint on it. This mural consists of random shapes and colors to create a
truly eye-catching piece of art. Students from any grade could help paint this mural and add
any little design they wanted to show off their inner artistic self and ultimately relieve
themselves of their daily stress.
Cohort 2020 Overnight College Trip By Skytasia Morrison
The overnight trip consisted of juniors, a few sophomores, and one senior taking tours of colleges. The first night
consisted of a tour of the University of Maryland which contains 4 pools, 3 indoor and one outside. Every sport included
in the college has its own stadium. Scholars were astonished when they heard the University of Maryland doesn’t charge
their students for sports admission tickets. Students even learned that the University of Maryland has two admissions
periods, one in November so you can have more time to complete FAFSA and more than likely to be accepted then
sending in your admissions application to the other period in January. Students were also informed that the University
of Maryland has a graduation rate of 80% and an acceptance rate of 20 %. Scholars were excited to hear the university
has a study abroad program. Students really enjoyed visiting the University of Maryland and many said they can see
themselves attending the school later on in the future: “The University of Maryland is very big, spacious, diverse, and
athletic,” said junior, Markayla Atwell. Students had a completely different opinion when it came to visiting Morgan
State University. The university was a historically black college/university (HBCU), which students enjoyed. Students
were informed that Morgan State has a writing lab with people who can help you conduct your writing assignments.
Scholars were also told that the university has counseling on campus with therapists just in case students are having a
hard time with their college experience. Students weren’t excited to hear there were limited majors and most classes
were being focused mainly on sports. Two anonymous students stated, “It was very small and vacant like, it wasn’t really
engaging, it was just dull, but I enjoyed seeing a sorority” and “I was upset to hear that my intended major was a minor at
Morgan State and it didn’t succeed my expectations.¨

Student Ambassadors By Kiara Brown
Student Ambassadors is an organization coordinated by Ms. Lewis that started in
November 2018. We trained and learned how to engage with students and
parents around recruitment. We continue to organize and execute open houses,
day tours, community events, and we even tabled the youth conference at
Brooklyn College. This month we led a tour of sixty 8th grade students. Now we
are prepared to run a family fun day, showcase of the Humanities III, and two
high school fairs. We get to see that us as students love showing other students
about our school and how our school is different from the others. Being a student
ambassador you have a lot of responsible and a team that counts on you.We get to
make a different everyday by making the school a better place. Come and join our

Women's History Month By Skytasia Morrison
Every year, March is recognized as Women’s History Month. Women’s history
was first conducted as a celebration in Santa Rosa, California. A women’s
history week celebration was executed by The Education Task Force of the
Sonoma County in California in 1978. They chose the week of March 8th so it
could correspond with International Women’s Day. In 1980, a pool of women’s
groups and historians led by the National Women’s History Project (now the
Women’s History Month Alliance) successfully influenced for national
recognition. In February 1980 President Jimmy Carter issued the first
Presidential Proclamation making the week of March 8th 1980 as National
Women’s History Week. Women’s History Month came about in 1981 when
Congress passed Pub. L. 97-28 which commissioned and requested the whole
month of March as Women’s History Month.
Inspirational Women: Shirley Chisholm By Zakayah Abraham
Shirley Chrisholm (1924-2005) was the first African American congresswoman as a representative of New York in 1968.
Shirley graduated from Brooklyn Girls High School in 1942. She then attended Brooklyn College and graduated in 1946,
where she won prizes on the debate team. Even with much knowledge, Shirley doubted herself greatly due to the fact she
was African American and a woman. She then got a masters degree from Columbia University in Early Childhood
Education(1951). Aware of the racial and gender inequality, it didn’t stop Shirley from joining chapters of the League of
Women Voters, the NAACP, the Urban League, and the Democratic Party Club. By 1964, Chrisholm ran for and became
the second African American in the New York State Legislative. After much work, in 1968, Chrisholm finally won her seat
in Congress. In her position, Chrisholm continued to advocate for racial and gender equality. She also introduced more
than 50 pieces of legislation on women’s rights, racial equality, plight of the poor, and ending the Vietnam War. She then
co-founded the National Women’s Political Caucus in 1971. She made history in 1972 as the first African American
woman to run for president; though being unsuccessful, her campaign broke racial barriers making it easier for Barack
Obama to run for presidency. In 1997, she became the first African American woman, and second woman, to serve on the
powerful House Rules Committee. In 1983, Chrisholm retired from Congress and moved to Florida to spend the rest of
her life. Throughout her political success, Chrisholm experienced much discrimination, but she refused to give up
breaking racial and gender inequalities. Her strength and determination has helped pave the a way for others.

Serena Jameka Williams is an American professional tennis player. She was “Battling” Barbara Buttrick was a pioneer in the female boxing world in

Celebrity Drama Update By Ariel Bastien By Zakayah Abraham
Recently, Khloe Kardashian has been having relationship issues with her boyfriend Tristan Thompson. Jordyn
Woods, Kylie Jenner’s best friend, kissed Tristan at a party. Khloe tweeted “What’s been harder and more painful is
being hurt by someone so close to me. Someone whom I love and treat like a little sister. Although, Jordyn is not to
be blamed for the breakup of my family. This was Tristan’s fault.” Kylie stated "It’s been a struggle and difficult. She
was very upset about the situation with Jordyn and also just didn’t want to deal with it and have to address it." But
apparently, this wasn’t Tristan’s first time cheating. According to People.com, Khloe stated, “Honestly, Tristan
cheating on me and humiliating me, wasn’t such a shock as the first time.” Tristan allegedly cheated on Khloe last
April; there were photos and videos of him getting close to another women just days before she gave birth to their
daughter. During the Red Table Talk, Jordyn said “It was like a kiss on the lips, but no tongue kiss, no making out”.
However, Khloe isn't the only celebrity having relationship issues and trying to clear out the air. Big Sean and Ariana
Grande has been spotted together in Los Angeles, supposedly in his car talking outside of a recording studio
showing up for a reunion. Meanwhile, everyone knows Big Sean was dating Jhene Aiko. According to Pagesix.com,
“In a Instagram comment earlier this week, the singer made clear she and the rapper are no more, but also that
there’s no animosity between the two.”
What To Know About YNW Melly By Natalia Morris
Jamell Maurice Demons, known as YNW Melly, is an American rapper, singer, and songwriter. He is best
known for his break out singles, “Murder On My Mind” and “Mixed Personalities.” Demons was born on
May 1, 1999 in Gifford, Florida. As a young kid, Demons was known for being different,having his own
style, and being energetic. Demons caught my eye with his personality and different style which makes him
my favorite artist overall; his music is also soothing. He started off his music career by posting his songs on
Soundcloud at the age of 15. Demons first ran into the law when he was convicted of a school shooting; no
one was injured, however, he got hit with 4 major charges. Still a minor, Demons ended up spending a year
in jail and received his GED while behind bars; he was released in March 2017. In 2018, he released more
singles such as, “Virtual (Blue Balenciagas)”, “Melly The Menace”, and “Slang That Iron.” His music videos
have amassed 26 million, 16 million and 11 million views (respectively) on YouTube as of January 2019.
Demons has a different style from other current rappers which makes him stand out tremendously. He also gives his fans a mixture of the two sides he has
called, Melly and Melvin. One of his singles “Murder On My Mind,” is receiving more attention now than before due to his current incarceration, making
him more known and his music more popular. Demons was wanted in February by the law, for the double homicide of his 2 childhood friends, Ynw Juvy
(Christopher Thomas Jr), and Ynw Sakschaser (Anthony Williams). Ever since his arrest, his single “Murder On My Mind,” is being viewed as a confession.
However, Juvy and Sakschaser were murdered in October 2018 and Demons released his song in 2017. Demons plead not guilty to all charges against him
and will be going to trial on April 9. Many say this is the end of Melly´s career, however his fanbase think otherwise and are standing with him through it all.

Movie Review: Malevolent By Jaimelymn Elien &Vanessa Henry
In 1986, in Scotland, Angela and Jackson are two American siblings who, with a small team of
paranormal investigators, run a fake medium scam on clients who believe their houses are haunted.
They convince their clients that Angela has the ability to communicate with the dead and they could
help get rid of their paranormal problems . Their next client Mrs. Green is an old lady that lives alone
in a abandoned orphanage, which has a horrifying dark history. Years ago there was a string of
murders where young girls were killed and their twisted killer *spoiler alert* (aka Mrs. Green’s son,
Herman) stitched their mouths up . Ironically Angela begins to start seeing spirits and believes she is
going crazy like her mother who winds up committing suicide because she saw people who wasn’t
there. While at the house the team formulates a plan to con Mrs. Green, who has given them access
to all of the house, but bans them from the East Wing. Angela continues to experience paranormal sights and sounds, even seeing the murdered girls.
Angela then ignores the teams plan and follows the spirit of one of the girls into the East Wing, where they accidentally discover the place the girls had
been kept. The walls were covered with writing of the girls begging for help. Angela wants to leave and abandon the job but Jackson presses for them to
continue. Mrs. Green then bluntly informs Jackson that she believes them to be con artists. Jackson starts seeing things himself, and finally decides to
abandon the job after Mrs. Green hints she was involved in the girls murder. Attempting to leave the house, they find Beth, the technician and Jackson's
girlfriend, has gone missing.This is when things start going left Jackson eventually finds Beth unconscious, her mouth sewn shut. Attempting to drive
away from the house, Jackson crashes the car, killing Beth. Herman, alive and hiding in the East Wing, takes Jackson from the accident. Mrs. Green, mad
about Jackson's act, sews his mouth shut before ordering Herman to take him to the shed and kill him. Angela is captured by Herman on his way back to
the house. What I don’t understand though is why in the world would Mrs. Green hire “physics” in the first place because they are just going to figure out
that she was the one who killed the girls or at least was involved. Anyways Elliot arrives as Mrs. Green begins to sew Angela's mouth shut and manages to
kill Herman. Overall it wasn’t a terrible movie, but I wouldn’t recommend it to someone. I felt like it was just a cheap, lazy movie that could have been
better. The way they were dressed didn’t match the year of the setting, the acting was ok and there could have been more effects. So overall I’d give it a 3
out of 5 stars. The plot was somewhat interesting so if you’re really bored and have nothing to watch this would be a good movie.

Homework Poll: Is it Necessary? By Denzel Palmer
Upon the results of our poll, people would rather not
have homework assigned to them and they gave a
couple of good explanations. Many students believe
homework proves to be a great hassle considering the
time they leave school. Students spend most of their
hours in school learning and they also take notes.
Having homework is just another way to distract kids
from the sleep needed to attend school on time. 45.9%
of the students said NO to having homework and
they gave a lot of excellent responses. One of the
students said “No because the amount of work we do
in school is enough already.” This isn’t inaccurate
since all the students arrive at school by 8:30 and
leave by 3:22. This means kids spend approximately 7
hours everyday in school.
Uniform Policy OP/ED By Markayla Atwell & Rose Bruny
“Kids love to experiment with their clothing and accessories; a student's apparel is an extension of her personality. People say you
only get one chance to make a first impression, and for kids, clothing is an important part of that first impression.” According to
Beattie, "the most frequently cited reasons for using uniforms are increased school safety, socio-economic leveling, removing
distractions from inappropriate or provocative streetwear, and promoting school identity and spirit." He also noted that there was
a "reduction in disciplinary referrals, affordable and appropriate clothing, elimination of the "what to wear" delay on school
mornings, increased school safety, etc." Beattie also stated, "the goal is to make school a safer, more egalitarian environment in
which students can thrive."
Markayla - I don’t think schools have a good idea on uniforms. Honestly, some kids don’t like the uniforms. Not only are the
colors plain and boring, but we also can’t wear the shoes we want and payed for. Sometimes we want to feel comfortable while
doing school work or when being in school in general. Dress codes aren’t necessary anymore as long as we do what we come to
school to do: get an education, graduate, and go on with life; it shouldn’t matter what we’re wearing. Clothes are clothes whether
it’s name brand or not, it’s our style. Uniforms have been the biggest debate in public and private schools between students and
staff. I understand taking away our phones, but our ways of dressing too? Nobody wants to be in 80 degree weather wearing black
and blue!
Rose- I believe that students should be able to express themselves through regular clothes. Having to wear the same clothes as our
friends is boring. Everyone has a different style so we should be able to show it to other kids. School staff should come up with
appropriate dress codes that all students must follow. But on the other hand wearing regular clothes to school can cause chaos
because some students wouldn’t listen to the rules of the dress codes, and not all the kids have enough money to buy clothes to
wear to school. Uniform should be an option to students. Or we can just do uniform shirt with any jean bottoms and any
sneakers. That way we can still express ourself through our clothes and still wear uniform.

Is Social Media affecting us? OP/ED By Alondra B
Everywhere around us there are electronics. In our pockets, we can find
our phones that contain the same information a computer can spit out.
We have apps on these phones that help us connect to other people
around the globe at any given time on social media apps like Instagram,
Facebook, and Twitter. However, are these apps really benefiting us as a
society? Think about it. How many hours does the average social media
user waste? The average usage of social media globally is a staggering 135
minutes per day according to Statistica.com which sites statistics in
social media. In all those hours we obviously look at images and pictures.
When we look at these people who are living these perfect lives with
These perfectly chiseled and curved bodies, these images go into our mind. According to researchers, people especially teens who
look constantly at these pictures, there is a strong connection between depression and eating disorders. The reason for this is
because many people tend to compare their bodies with these instagram model’s bodies and they ultimately think that their body
looks “wrong” or “off” from the model’s bodies. This causes many people to think that they are unattractive and they think that
they need to be “fixed”. This is where many people (mostly young female teens) tend to start having eating disorders in order to
look “perfect”. These thoughts cause people to have fatal eating habits like anorexia and bulimia to name a few. According to the
National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Nervosa, these mental disorders have the highest mortality rate out of
all of the mental diseases out there. This isn’t the only problem being linked to people who spend countless hours on social media.
Depression is also a big issue as well. Teens are so much influenced by social media that they let it take over them . This leads to
depression and other multiple issues. What we can learn for this is that while it’s not wrong to use social media, it is important to
learn how much time we spend on it because we can lose at what’s really important in life such as our mental health. We should
never let anything or anyone let our happiness down because we don’t look a certain way or have certain objects in our lives.
Video Game Violence OP/ED By Imani Ware & Kelsey Wedderburn
Imani- Yes, videos affect youth violence. There are plenty of studies that shows
that it does. One major case was the Slender Man stabbing case. On May 31,
2014, 12 year old Anisa E, Weier and Morgan E. Geyser took their friend to the
woods and stabbed her 19 times trying to impress slender man. Kids that play
violent video games are more likely to be very violent people. Studies show that
it causes more violent behavior. Personally, I think mental health plays a major
part on affecting violence in kids. I feel like if you’re in a bad place you might
be affected more than a regular child. Another effect is how much time you
spend on the game. Video games never affected me personally, but for others it

Kelsey - Even though violent video games could affect a child’s view and behavior, it could also make it better. For example, only
a small number of children who are already introduced to violence because of their family environment see changes to their
behavior because of playing video games . The vast majority of people who play violent video games, no matter how often, have
no changes to their behavior outside of the game. In fact, video games are tied to a decrease in actual violence. An economic
study published in February 2016 found a reduction in crime in the weeks after major video game releases. A handful of similar
studies conducted from a range of perspectives have come to the same conclusion. In one experiment, they investigated whether
playing with realistic characters influenced the aggression of the game players. Previous research has suggested that the more
"real" a game’s violence seems, the more primed players are by the violent concepts, leading to antisocial behaviour. Some of the
games included characters that employed "ragdoll physics" so that the characters moved in the same way humans might; for
instance, falling in an apparently natural way when injured. I however do not find video games to be the cause of violence.
Video games can help you in many different situations. For example the game called "Minecraft" is mostly about survival. You get
spawned on an island with nothing in your hand and nothing but endless trees and animals like sheep, cows, chickens and pigs.
This game can be useful for whenever you find yourself stranded and how you could survive. This game also has some creativity
where you can build endlessly in a mode called "Creative mode." This can help with your creativity skills. In addition, some
violent video games can also give you new experiences. On November 21, 2017 a new game called "Call of Duty: WWII "had
came out and it was based off of the historical event of WWII. Yes this game involves a lot of blood and gore violence but at the
same time you get to experience what it was like taking part in the war.
