ETVET College Principal From the Rector’s Desk Parents and Guardians, I want to thank you for enrolling your Editorial children and trusting us with them every day at Elangeni College. Most of you did not have a choice, but I hope that if you did, you would have done it the same way. Staff, this is not just about our lecturers that have taught our students, but it is about the collective effort from ALL of you. Everyone from the admin staff, lecturers and College management believe in always doing what is best for the students. Your kindness and caring for students as whole people and not as numbers on exams is the reason that we “Goals are dreams with deadlines” will see these students flourish into leaders. It’s only human nature to recall the objectives we initially set out to achieve now that the end of another year is upon us. College Interim Representative Body (CIRB) As part of the its focus on development, Inanda Campus hosted an educational programme titled, “Young Women Empowerment through Education” on Friday 26th October 2017. Sphesihle Ngubo from The Higher education and Training HIV/AIDS Programme (HEAIDS) Student Support Services presented a talk to students. Yoliswa Mbhele recited a poem called Okomhlaba Sengiyakushiya and thereafter students received gift bags filled with sanitary products. Elangeni TVET College hosted the KZN Provincial Book Review & Poetry Competition on 15th September 2017 at Mpumalanga Campus Hall. Nomvula Zulu of Majuba College was the winner of the Poetry segment whilst A.S Mdlalose of Inanda Campus won 3rd place in the same category. She believes that empowering young girls and women is powerful as it is the key to economic growth, political and social transformation. “I see my purpose as giving Ndwedwe back to the community, to be the Women in Engineering Celebrated best version of my self, to follow my dreams and to be a woman who uses all the opportunities given out of grace to inspire, love and to give” says Mbokazi. Ndwedwe Campus took advantage of National Women’s Day by encouraging young women to study in the field of Engineering. According to Wiseman Zulu, this initiative was in line with the Department of Higher Education and Training’s (DHET) TVET Month in August to promote Decade of the Artisan. “We are proud that our female students were involved in building risk management office under the guidance of Mr. NE Mabaso and Mr. PM Maphumulo,” said Zulu. He applauded the efforts of Ndwedwe staff with a special mention to Mrs Z.B Makhaye for organising the event. Listen to your ART Andile Mbatha’s dream is to own his own hospitality establishment someday but right now he shares his time between studying Hospitailty and reciting his own poetry. Known to the local arts world as Zeph the poet, Mabatha is also a member of the Love World Production under the leadership of director Sosha Lungisani Khumalo. Mbatha will be appearing on SABC 1 on Monday 16 November 2017 as a poet giving praises to King Shaka in the televised play, “The Return of King Shaka” written and directed by Khumalo. The aim of this seminar was to observe how TVET Colleges in China function. School. Engineering. Delegates were hosted by Ningbo Polytechnic College, a full-time public higher educational institution located in Beilun New Zone, China. The 2 weeks comprised of an official address by the Chinese Minister of Education thereafter lectures were taught via high-ranking college officials, who introduced delegates to the Chinese TVET education structure. On the job training experience! Theoretical study, forum exchanges and discussions as well as tours were arranged during the seminar to give delegates a view of TVET College’s in China. Each tour included a short tour of the campus itself where delegates observed the extent of integration of Pinetown Level 4 I.T students gained more than just workplace practical and theoretical components. “Many lessons were learnt, with some soon to be implemented to improve the TVET skills and experience when they attended the Engineering sector in South Africa,” said Dlungwana. and IT Expo at the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal (UKZN) on 16 August 2017. Staff then incorporated Heritage Day into their activities, which included outdoor cooking and cultural entertainment. Events Events Staff Sports Day Soccer Teams Sports Day was held on the 29th of September 2017 at Edgewood College for all staff. This event, a first of it kind for the College, was proposed by the Human Resources Department to increase social cohesion amongst all staff. All campuses including Central Office Mpumalanga Campus KwaMashu Campus competed against each other in soccer, netball, tug of war and the orange basket match. The day proved to be just as successful as the scores!
