Ealing Libraries June Highlights We are delighted to welcome historian Paul Crooks to Central library to celebrate Windrush Day with a seminar on how Windrush passenger lists can be used to trace Afro-Caribbean people’s ancestry. We also have fun Jubilee and Father’s Day crafts and Jonathan Oates will be discussing how Ealing celebrated the Silver Jubilees of George V and Elizabeth II. Our online resources allow you to borrow and read books digitally, have full access to reference materials and you canalso read newspapers and magazines from all around the world. Through the lens of his pioneering research into Black ancestry, Paul will discuss how he used passenger lists records to search for his family tree and back story and how passenger lists complement other sources of ancestry information. Learn how You can use the Windrush Generation Passenger Lists to explore your African and Caribbean history, fill a gap in your family tree and bring your family’s Windrush backstory to life. Workshops will include bird house / Bug Hotel making learning about climate change, recycling, habitats, garden- ing and planting your own fruit and veg. Get your green fingers ready to have some outdoor fun. We also have volunteering opportunities available for all ages in the Library Garden on Saturday from 10am-12noon, calling all green fingers to come and support with planting and gardening duties. This talk examines the different ways in which these events were marked locally and how inhabit- ants reacted. Admission: Free, Places are limited, Advance booking is essential, please book at: http://ealinglibs.eventbrite.com Ealing Central Library Thursday 30 June 5:30pm monday 6 Royal Visit to Ealing Ealing Broadway shopping centre opened in 1984, after several years of work and it transformed Ealing’s town centre. It was officially only opened in March 1985 when Her Majesty Elizabeth II arrived on her one official visit to Ealing. She was met by the Mayor of Ealing and many well wishers. Empathy Day aims to help everyone understand and experience the transformational power of empathy through stories. Books can help us understand someone else’s feelings by stepping into the shoes of the characters we meet and inspire us to put empathy into action. On 9 June, Empathy Day live, is an online festival featuring a stellar line up of authors and illustrators. Be prepared for a fantastic day of live events, including Cressida Cowell, Jacqueline Wilson, Michael Morpurgo, Michael Rosen, Joseph Coelho, and a special Draw with Rob Biddulph. In addition, throughout the week of 6 – 11 June, libraries will be including empathy stories into their rhyme-time and story-time sessions, as well as offering empathy-based activities for children.
