1 MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN “Education is the password to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today” Education is not a merely acquirement of facts but also of values which helps us improve the different facets of mankind. It ensures that we leave the world a far better place then we found it. A pivotal role of education lies in shaping the personality of a child into a healthy mind and happy sole, who is equipped with 21st century skills and aptitude required for academic excellence, but helping him face the challenges of life in a balanced and harmonious way . The system of education should walk as a catalyst in making each child a balanced human being, having his core strength embedded in the learning experiences maintaining from our rich socio-cultural roots. In this persuade of excellence, I appreciate our parent fraternity for supporting the school in every aspect. I also laud the relentless effects of our teachers and principal for giving their best in bringing out the best in each child. But I would exhort the students to always be modest, humble and disciplined, while being ready to expand the horizons of their knowledge and skill by dreaming big and work hard. Kendriya Vidyalaya, NDA maps academic excellence with good human value system, which in myriad ways is ingrained in the culture of the school. To achieve this, I strongly feel that a paradigm shift in the minds of all parents should take places so that the school has its tenets enshrined in a good value system; the extension of which is thereby taken home where it is further strengthened. Our commitment to such education shall always persist in all our endeavors. 1 DROPLETS

3 FROM THE EDITORS’ DESK Mr. Balaji Marakwar PGT English Mrs. Chandrakanta Sanhotra TGT English Mr. ShivKumar Surthy Teacher Technical Editor Master. Yash Niwal Student Technical Editor Miss. Suhani Shinde Student Editor Miss. Savita Singh Student Editor This is the time of great changes. In education too, we see fast changes. The student today is an individual, is a real person with feeling of self respect, sensitivity responsibility and compassion. We need to recognize, appreciate, applaud and foster the fine blend of sensibilities in a child and thus UTTAN is to be viewed as a launch pad for the children’s urges to blossom naturally. As the saying goes, mind like parachute works best when opened. The edition is to set the budding minds free, allowing them to roam free in the realm of imagination and experiences to create a world of beauty in words. The Magazine also exposes the school sprite which is built up within the school through the collective actions ,thoughts and aspiration .all these , we believe, would spur higher growth in enterprise in children. My thanks to the student and the teachers who have been an immense help in breathing life into these pages. Good Luck… Happy Reading… - Editorial Team 3 DROPLETS

27 NATURE’S CREATIVITY Picasso once said “all children are born artists”. The problem is to remain an artist as we grow up. I believe we don’t grow in creativity, rather grow out of it. Children love to write stories, have fantastic imagination, enjoy getting messy, painting, music, inventing characters, acting out plays, drawing and making things. Why don’t we carry this natural capacity throughout adulthood? Why would nature intend us to loss these gifts? Frankly speaking education and creativity do not co-exist as they should have. Only academic ability is tested. In short we have been educated to become good walker rather than creative thinkers. Competition has entered the creative arena, where standardization raises its ugly head. All must do well in everything. We need to focus more on developing environment, where children can realize their full potential. I know many highly talented, brilliant creative people think that they are no more creative because the things they were good at in school wasn’t valued, or was actually stigmatized. To avoid this we need to rethink the fundamental principal under flying the why we educate our children. Our task is to educate the whole being so that they can face the future and make something of it. Just focusing on left brain is suppressing creativity. - Mrs. Sujata Apte PRT 27 DROPLETS

32 SAVE FUEL, INCREASE PROFIT, SAVE OUR PLANET Today we have become highly depended on machines including automobiles, all of which require one kind of fuel or the other to perform the action for which they are designed. Human movement drastically changed with them emergence of means of transport. These motorized means of transport use petroleum in various form as fuel. One can imagine that with the rising number of private vehicles, the fuel consumption has increased. Fuel stock is limited and therefore it has to be used economically. Therefore, there is a lot of concern preserving fuel and contributing to national development. India is not an oil rich country and it has to import oil fuels in order in to meet our demands. This makes fuel prices in our country depend on world market. At the same time excess of import leads to trade imbalance, which effects economic growth of the country. It is thus important to keep in mind that every time we go for a pleasure drive, we are eating into the resources of our country. Therefore, we should try to save fuel for the future of our nation. By saving fuel, we can reduce oil imports, which will contribute to India’s economic growth. Moreover, reduced imports will also make India a self- dependent nation. However, now a day we observe that owning multiples vehicles has become a status symbol. These days one finds in many families that every member owns a vehicle which naturally increases fuel consumption besides causing pollution and traffic congestion. Hence use of vehicles has to be minimized to save fuel. The following measures may help us reduce fuel consumption 1) Promoting the use of public transport system 2) Encouraging people to opt for car pools 3) Avoiding use of vehicles for short distance 4) Observing one day of week as “no car day” 5) Promoting the use of bicycles 6) “IF WE DON’T TAKE FUEL CRISIS SERIOUSLY, WE MAY B BACK IN BULLOCK-CARTS ERA” - Sarthak More IX B 32 DROPLETS

34 ACID BASES AND SALTS Acids, bases and salts are a part of chemistry Here we are out to solve a mystery Acids are substances that are highly sour Gives off H+ ions in H2O and is easy to pour They are corrosive and turn blue to red Conducts electricity, doesn’t interchange instead Bases are substances that give out? OH- ions in H2O a silly doubt Are slippery to touch, bitter to taste Turns red to blue in a haste There are numerous types of salts Common salt, I can say it without a fault Acidic, basic and neutral vary Interprets then by the concentration hey carry A strong acid and a weak base Is an acidic salt, depends on the case Weak acid and if the base is strong Its basic salt, isn’t wrong If both are strong then you can guess It’s neutral, and says a yes Want to know much about them? 36 NECESSITY OF CONSERVATION “The Earth has enough for everyone’s need, but not for anyone’s greed” • Mahatma Gandhi It was forest where mankind put his first foot; he developed his habits, culture and religion. He still depends upon the forest for his existence. Yet these vast and useful forests are diminishing in their size day by day, just because of humans’ neglect and ignorant use. Man’s brain has developed to an incredible extent since his origin and in the process has involuntarily damaged the earth in several days; deforestation, pollution and population explosion, you name it, but we done it. Now it is only man who can save earth as his unique life system depends upon it. The meaning of conservation is not superficial and does not hint to the preservation of things. It means to put them to use with great care and affection. Since independence, our country has lost more than four lakh hectares of forest, a precious and renewable source of energy, due to indiscriminate use of land and agriculture, power projects, commercial areas, etc. In matter of conservation of wildlife our country has done an appreciable work by totally banning of poaching of animals and initiating establishment of sanctuaries and national parks. Nature has done a lot of full fill our needs, but if we neglect it, it would neglect us one day. - Poonam Sharma 36 DROPLETS
37 INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT THE WORLD 1. The Celsius scale was devised by a Swedish astronomer, Andres Celsius in 1742. However, much of this life is still unknown to us. 4. That is what makes the lightning so dangerous. 5. For us oxygen is essential, but for those organisms which do not use it, oxygen is toxic. 39 THE DELIMMA OF A CLASS 10TH CHILD I have decided to write this article as something has bothered me for a longtime now. It’s about the biggest dilemma a class 10th student faces at the tender of age 15, of making a choice of stream for further studies which will eventually determine the career option. I mean isn’t it unfair that we have to choose something that can change our lives forever at such an early stage, knowing that there is no turning back in the most cases? Nevertheless, one has to accept this harsh reality. The big question for me is to choose between PCB and PCM. I’m sure not everyone faces this dilemma as many students already make up their mind pretty early. But those who are undecided please read this article carefully. Choosing the right career is very important. An individual spends a considerable amount of time working, so loving ones a job becomes personal and professional satisfaction. Hence it is wise to choose a stream which leads you to your dream career. Also keep in mind that before plugging into a career stream, explore the options it offers. If it matches your aptitude then you should go for it. The general trend of our country has been prescience. Anyone who is a little bright and may be confused is told to blindly follow the masses, that is, opt for science. I really admire the spirit of arts students who are bold enough to opt for it in a country where arts student are considered comparatively weaker. I think it’s time for people to start respecting others choices and understand that every child is unique in his/her own qualities. I feel it as aptitude and interest for the child who should dedicate the choice of stream rather than following the masses. Do explore the internet every day. S plethora information is available at the click of a button. Possible career options are available for every stream. It’s not that one is totally alone to make this decision. Parents, teachers, career counselor do play their role. But as they say ‘one can take a horse to the water, but can’t make it drink’. Similarly parents can only guide us and show us the path. It is finally we, who have to carve our life on our own. So better listen to your heart and follow your passion. Always remember: EDUCATION ISN’T THE PREPARATION FOR LIFE… IT IS LIFE ITSELF….. - Prerna Arya XC 39 DROPLETS
