Northern Ohio Dressage Association, President’s Welcome Dear Competitors, Friends, and Families, On behalf of the Northern Ohio Dressage Association, welcome to Dressage 2021 and Dressage Encore 2021, two qualifying competitions for the 2021 Great American/USDF Regional Championships. This year’s show weekend is extra special to us all because for the first time in many years, NODA had to make the hard decision to skip 2020’s recognized shows due to COVID. NODA’s recognized show committee works hard every year to provide great competitions for our area, and in 2021 they are working extra hard to bring you the high quality shows you expect while providing for the safety of our staff, volunteers, competitors, friends and families. Dressage 2021 and Dressage 2021 Encore are all about safely coming back together on the showgrounds to enjoy the horse and rider combinations and to see one another once again! These are NODA’s first competitions at Pure Gold Stables and we’d like to thank the management and hardworking staff for their time and detail to getting the venue ready for us. NODA is grateful for the use of this beautiful facility and the commitment Pure Gold Stables has shown to the success of our show weekend during the planning and set-up process. NODA’s annual recognized shows could not take place without our dedicated Recognized Show Committee and each and every one of our wonderful volunteers. Like most non-profit organizations, NODA’s success rests in the many talents and the generous gift of time from our committed volunteers. You sign up and work, no matter what the weather and for long hours to bring our competitors this show. Thank you is never enough. NODA is also grateful for the support of our longtime sponsors and advertisers and those who are new to us in 2021. Dressage competitions showcase each competitors long hours of training and care of their horses, as well as the attributes of patience, determination, sportsmanship, and hard work. Your support allows NODA to provide a high quality venue and program to support Dressage competitors in northeast Ohio. You also make it possible for NODA to continue to provide scholarships and educational programs such as our schooling show series and clinics to serve the equestrian community. Thank you to all of our competitors, NODA members, families, and friends who are supporting this event. We’re so happy you’re here and grateful to have your help. NODA appreciates Show Secretary.com and Susan Peacock for managing entries and providing the on- site secretary services for this two-show weekend. We’re thankful for all the help and advice we have gained from working with Susan this year. Now it’s time for Dressage 2021 and Dressage 2021 Encore to begin! Best of luck to all of our competitors and everyone, have fun! Sincerely, Niki Sackman President, Northern Ohio Dressage Association Page 3 www.nodarider.org

Welcome USEF Officials Dressage 2021 and Dressage 2021 Encore Heidi Berry, USEF S Judge On Saturday, June 26th Heidi Berry from Virginia will be judging. Heidi has been a Horse Enthusiast from an early age, Rider, Trainer, Instructor, and Judge. Heidi hunted and evented in the 1970’s and 80’s, but since that time has focused exclusively on dressage. She has competed successfully at FEI levels, earning the USDF bronze, silver, and gold medals. Heidi teaches at her farm in Loudoun County, Vir- ginia. Her students have ranged in age from 10 to 75 and most are successful competitors. Heidi teaches clinics and often works with pony clubs, promoting dressage for young riders. Heidi is a Senior dressage judge (“S”), having completed USEF’s highest level of certification in 2013. She also received her FEI 3* license in 2018. She travels all around the country, judging at all levels of competition. She is currently competing on a 11-year-old American Warmblood gelding at PSG and is bringing along a newly purchased 4-year-old DHH. Heidi loves being a judge and teaching all ages and working with a variety of breeds of horses. Her advice to com- petitors: Follow the training scale and ride for harmony. A harmonious ride, even with small mistakes, can win the class! Sue Mandas, USEF S Judge On Sunday, June 27th Sue Mandas from Ohio will be judging. Sue has been in- volved in the sport of Dressage as competitor, trainer, breeder and instructor for over 40 years. She is a Senior “S” dressage judge, an “R” Sport Horse Breed judge, and a member of the USDF Sport Horse Faculty. Sue is a USDF Bronze, Silver and Gold Medalist and earned the Silver and Gold Freestyle Bars. Sue has trained many horses to the FEI level, winning Regional Champion or Reserve Champion at every level, Second through Grand Prix, and making the USET longlist several times. Currently she is liv- ing in Centerville, Ohio where she rides a young red mare, trains and teaches. Janice Welch, USEF R Technical Delegate Having grown up on a cattle ranch in Kansas, Janice first encountered dressage in the late 1970's when she moved to Los Angeles, CA. Becoming the 2nd Dressage Technical Delegate (TD) in Southern California in the 1980's, Janice has enjoyed this role for over 30 years. In recent years, she has bred warmbloods for her daughter to show in Dressage. Janice is semi-retired. NODA Recognized Show Program Art Contest Submissions Felicitas Riding Her Horse Doing Piaffe By Valerie Grava Valerie drew Felicitas Riding Her Horse Doing Piaffe because “she loves drawing pictures of horses and giving them to people. She sent Felicitas von Neumann Cosel home with the original of this piece! Valerie also loves to paint Brey- er and Schleich model horses, along with drawing and painting horses and loves to draw a horse doing dressage move- ments. Felicitas von Neumann Cosel says “some students pay with a different currency.” Valerie loves, Minnie, show name, Minuit an 8 year old Bay, Welsh Cob and “I want to learn flying changes! Right now she is working on keeping Minnie on the bit. Valerie says she plans on “going to lots of horse shows this year! Valerie keeps her horse at Topline Stables where she takes lessons from Anne McClintock, Felicitas von Neumann Cosel, and of course, Mom, Janeen Grava. And she says she is lucky to “also ride another horse, Capri, that teaches me all sorts of new riding skills.” Page 21 www.nodarider.org

NODA Recognized Show Program Art Contest Submissions Forever Free By Kayda Strah Kayda Strah says she painted Forever Free because she lost her 6year old Friesian gelding "Tyson" to pancreatic dis- ease and drew this picture to represent what he must look like running in heaven's endless pastures. Kayda loves art and is very creative even painting all the boarders horses on rocks for them at Dream On Farm. Kayda says both art and dressage, “have lots of patterns and shapes. You have to become one with art and your horse when riding. Most importantly be patient. “ Kayda currently has 3 horses, a 17 year old 16.3hh (Black) Friesian named Mykka who has taught her so much about care, patience, communication, and riding. They have won many awards together. Most recently, she and Myk- ka were awarded Region 5 FHANA Grand Champion for friesian Dressage. She also has an 11year old 16.3hh (bay) Oldenburg, Draco who will be her new riding partner. They just completed their first show last month and were excit- ed to place 1st in both classes. And finally, Kayda has a 17 year mini, 8hh (buckskin) named Forest who she wanted to rescue and has quickly become her little sidekick. Kayda’s goal is to improve her personal scores at Training Level and move up a level in 2022. Kayda’s horses are at her family farm, Dream On Farms, and she takes lessons with Loreen Cobb. NODA Recognized Show Program Art Contest Submissions Victory Lap By Gail Browning Gale Browning got the idea for her submission because the size recommended for the art contest made her think of a boot. “I laughed when you asked for a title. I am so new to drawing that I never thought about a title. I think "Victory Lap" would fit this image. Newbie describes my art journey. I'm only recently self-taught from books, videos and just playing around. The piece I submitted is graphite and colored pencil. I am sticking to pencil work for now and plan to try watercolor in the future.” Gail reminds us that “both working on an art piece and practicing dressage skills require attention to detail. They fully absorb you in the moment and can both frustrate and recharge you. Both are fantastic when you get in the zone with them. “ Gail rides Winterstern 6, a 16.3 hand Sache and says he is “a 24 year old very strict schoolmaster. He is a big chestnut who is a dream to ride if you are correct and a big lug if you are not. My continuing goal is to be correct more of the time!” In the winter, Winterstern 6 lives at home with Gail’s Friesian Sport Horse mare, Syzygy, and her retired 30 year old Saddlebred, Bayou. She loves seeing them all day and watching their antics. “I take lessons with Kris Ropp. Because of her dance background she is very focused on rider position. As a retired physician our discussions often involve lots of anatomy which is very helpful to how I understand my position's influence on the horse ( and, of course, Winter gives immediate feedback!).” The NODA recognized show committee had a hard time selecting the cover art and appreciates each of the submissions received from members! The winning submission, SALUTE, by Jen Cooper, is featured on the front cover of NODA Dressage 2021 and Dressage 2021 Encore show program. Page 25 www.nodarider.org
