We have apps for all ages, and every month we will choose one (or more) to highlight. Martha Speaks to Kids Education is at the heart of WGBH’s mission, and apps have proven to be an effective learning tool for children. Take the Martha Speaks Dog Party iPhone app inspired by WGBH’s curriculum-based television series Martha Speaks. Independent studies show that playing the app gives kids a 31 percent vocabulary boost. Building on the success of Dog Party, WGBH this fall launched two new Martha apps: Martha Speaks Story Maker for iPhones, and Martha Speaks Word Spinner for iPads. With Story Maker, kids can create eight different stories with Martha, who then reads their stories aloud. Word Spinner gets the whole family involved, giving up to four players the chance to compete in six fun and interactive mini-games. Along the way, kids develop their storytelling and oral vocabulary skills. Apps like Dog Party can get kids talking about the words they are learning, says Bill Shribman, senior executive producer for WGBH’s Children’s Media. “When kids say words out loud something magical happens,” Shribman says. “They begin to understand the meaning of the words they hear. It’s amazing to see learning in action.” The Martha Speaks Dog Party, Story Maker and Word Spinner apps are available on iTunes. 8 Full schedules: wgbh.org | Get more from the free digital edition of Explore! at wgbh.org/Explore
