DOLPHINS IN THE SKY LOGLINE The happy family life of a spirited, successful dancer and his passionate wife is thrown upside down by a shock diagnosis. SYNOPSIS Jay Robson, a famous British choreographer, is living the dream. Married to the two loves of his life, his wife and the art of dance, he has the blissful life most of us dream of...until a series of unfortunate events demonstrates the power of illness to impact your life and those around you. Faced with the horrors of life and loss, Jay escapes into fantasy, increasingly losing himself in the world of dance. Will he make it out alive? Or will he let go of those he loves in the battle to survive? A Screenplay, all rights reserved.
“Great dancers are great because of their passion” Martha Graham. Director’s Vision Statement DOLPHINS IN THE SKY is inspired by real events – my own story. A few months ago while hard at work on another screenplay, I was unexpectedly diagnosed with aggressive prostate cancer. That brush with death prompted me to write this script. Our film is not a grim representation or a campaign for this widespread deadly disease, but a socially impactful celebration of life. Important themes are explored and conveyed through the ups and downs of life; moments of laughter and humour will balance the sadness and the struggle for survival. As a filmmaker and writer who has often faced difficult situations, I bounced back, resolving to turn my personal and intimate experience into a film. Not only for the sake of my family, but also to shed light on this deadly disease by turning a dark, potentially depressing situation into a life affirming tale. DOLPHINS IN THE SKY will be purposeful, informative, educational, but more importantly it will take the audience on a unique, inspiring journey of self- discovery. We will raise important questions about the disease that takes one man’s life every hour in the UK. But ultimately, this is a film with plenty of heart, to remind us that, with the love and support of family and friends, we can turn any obstacle, even cancer, into a happy life.
It is also my vision to create an engaging and entertaining film by juxtaposing family life, love, passion, relationships and the struggle between life and death. And we will weave in contemporary dance elements, choir songs and music, all set against the backdrop of the historical and colourful city of Bath. I will shoot DOLPHINS IN THE SKY with 2.35:1 aspect ratio to give it optimum production values and a larger than life, cinematic look suitable for theatrical release. We will start with gentle use of tracking, tripod and drone shots to establish a world of balance and happy family life. This will then make way for a very different shooting style, with lot of handheld shots to dramatize the struggle with cancer. This approach will enable the most effective storytelling, and will enhance our audience’s experience. Sound effects and the soundtrack will also have a key role to play in conveying the story's emotional impact, alongside the visuals. Dolphins In The Sky opens with a bright colour palette, reflecting the Robsons happy, harmonious world. This will contrast with the later, darker colours to convey the despair caused by Jay‘s unexpected cancer diagnosis. “Wherever my story takes me, however dark and difficult the theme, there is always some hope and redemption, not because readers like happy endings, but because I am an optimist at heart. I know the sun will rise in the morning, that there is a light at the end of every tunnel.” Michael Morpurgo
