T.me/SleepyClasses Click here to watch the following topics on YouTube 1. Environment 1.1.High levels of mercury found in rivers linked to Greenland Ice Sheet • High concentrations of mercury, a naturally occurring toxic metal, were found in the water bodies fed by the Greenland Ice Sheet, according to a recent research Highlights • Typical dissolved mercury content in rivers are about 1 – 10 ng L-1 . • In the glacier meltwater rivers sampled in Greenland, scientists found dissolved mercury levels in excess of 150 ng L-1, far higher than an average river. • Particulate mercury carried by glacial our (the sediment that makes glacial rivers look milky) was found in very high concentrations of more than 2000 ng L-1. • Mercury-rich bedrock is weathered during the slow movement of glaciers down the slope of hills and the ground particles are carried into the streams as the glacier melts. Concerns • The large volumes of the metal can nd its way into the coastal food webs through bioaccumulation and impact the Arctic ecosystem • All the efforts to manage mercury thus far have come from the idea that the increasing concentrations we have been seeing across the Earth system come primarily from direct anthropogenic activity, like industry. • But mercury coming from climatically sensitive environments like glaciers could be a source that is much more dif cult to manage Mercury • A liquid, silvery metal. • Mercury easily forms alloys, called amalgams, with other metals such as gold, silver and tin. • The ease with which it amalgamates with gold made it useful in recovering gold from its ores. Mercury amalgams were also used in dental llings. • Mercuric sul de (vermilion) is a high-grade, bright-red paint pigment, but is very toxic so is now only used with great care • Mercury has no known biological role, but is present in every living thing and widespread in the environment. Every mouthful of food we eat contains a little mercury. • Our daily intake is less than 0.01 milligrams (about 0.3 grams in a lifetime), and this we can cope with easily. • However, in much higher doses it is toxic and one form of mercury – methyl mercury – is particularly dangerous. It can accumulate in the esh of sh and be eaten by people, making them ill. www.sleepyclasses.com Available on App Store 1 Call 6280133177 and Play Store fi fi fl fi fl fi fi
T.me/SleepyClasses • Mercury rarely occurs uncombined in nature, but can be found as droplets in cinnabar (mercury sul de) ores. • China and Kyrgyzstan are the main producers of mercury. • The metal is obtained by heating cinnabar in a current of air and condensing the vapour. T.me/SleepyClasses 2. Science & Technology 2.1.BioHub facility • Recently World Health Organization (WHO) and Switzerland signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to launch a BioHub BioHub facility • It will allow rapid sharing of pathogens between laboratories and partners to facilitate a better analysis and preparedness against them. • It will enable member states to share biological materials with and via the BioHub under pre-agreed conditions, including biosafety, biosecurity, and other applicable regulations. This will ensure timeliness and predictability in response activities. Signi cance • The move is signicant in the view of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic and the need to underline the importance of sharing pathogen information to assess risks and launch countermeasures. • The facility will help in safe reception, sequencing, storage and preparation of biological materials for distribution to other laboratories, so as to facilitate global preparedness against these pathogens. www.sleepyclasses.com Available on App Store 5 Call 6280133177 and Play Store fi fi
T.me/SleepyClasses 3. Geography 3.1.Total lunar eclipse and supermoon • The Moon will have the nearest approach to Earth on May 26, and therefore will appear to be the closest and largest Full Moon or “supermoon” of 2021 • Celestial event coincides with this year’s only total lunar eclipse, the rst since January 2019. • Signi cantly, a supermoon and a total lunar eclipse have not occurred together in nearly six years Lunar eclipse • Takes place when the Moon moves into the Earth’s shadow. • The Earth has to be directly between the Sun and the Moon, and a lunar eclipse can only take place during a full Moon. Total Lunar Eclipse • During this, the whole of the lunar disc enters the Earth’s umbra, so the Moon appears reddish (Blood Moon). This won’t last forever, though. • Afterabout 14 minutes, the Moon will move out of Earth’s umbra and back into its penumbra. • In total, the lunar eclipse will last a few hours. T.me/SleepyClasses 6. International Relations 6.1.Sanctions against Belarus • Recently, the European Union (EU) imposed sanctions against Belarus, including banning its airlines from using the airspace and airports of the 27-nation bloc EU Issue • Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko on May 23, 2021 forced a commercial airline ying from Greece to Lithuania to land in its territory reportedly on the pretext of a bomb scare, so it could arrest journalist Roman Protasevic, a dissident journalist who has been living in exile in Lithuania since eeing his home country in 2019. • The arrest sparked international outrage as it amounts to the hijacking of a plane and illegal arrest. EU sanctions • The leaders of EU member states have urged the European Council to adopt the necessary measures to ban over ight of EU airspace by Belarusian airlines. • They have also called for not giving Belarusian ights access to EU airports and have called on all EU- based carriers to avoid over ight of Belarus.
