Conference Chair Welcome It is with great pleasure that I welcome you all to the first-ever virtual District 70 Annual Conference. Our Conference theme is “Embrace Change” and the current Covid situation presented the organising committee with an exciting opportunity to move creatively and think outside the square to make the Conference a reality in a new and different environment. Our virtual Conference also gives us all the chance to freely communicate and network with amazing people from many nationalities, backgrounds and time-zones from all corners of the earth. This has never been possible before in a face-to-face conference. In another first, the Conference presents the unique opportunity to learn together from so many inspiring professional and educational keynote speakers, Toastmasters Accredited Speakers, a World Champion of Public Speaking, and our own District stars! We present you with seven exciting and informative educational presentations and an entertaining bush poet. You will also be able to chat and ask questions of the presenters, and network during the breaks. See the best speakers in the District Evaluation Speech Contest on Saturday afternoon and the District International Speech Contest on Saturday night. The 2021-22 District 70 Leadership Team will be elected on Saturday morning at the District Council Meeting, and you will meet the incoming team on Sunday afternoon. My sincere appreciation to the District 70 District Director Lorinda Logaraj DTM, Program Quality Director Kay Wood DTM and Club Growth Director Mitsie Kent DTM for their support and leadership guidance. Many thanks also to the Conference Team listed in this Program Book. May we all value the time we spend together, may we grasp it with both hands and make our own wonderful opportunities to carry with us in the years to come. Rosemary Medcalf DTM District 70 Annual Conference Chair 2
District Director Welcome I wish to begin by warmly welcoming all members and guests to the District 70 Annual Virtual Conference for 2021, a first in the history of District 70. The theme of the Conference for this year is “Embrace Change”, a fitting motif for the unprecedented change we have all experienced in our lives over the past 14 months. There have been many changes for members and clubs and for your District as a whole. I am incredibly proud of the members who, despite the many challenges, have embraced change, adapted and shown great resilience. The skills we have learned during this time will hold us in good stead for many years to come. Our future is bright. I am sure you will enjoy the many educationals, Keynotes and Contests that are available for the weekend. Please take the opportunity to mix and make new connections during the social networking and breakout events on offer throughout the Conference. There will be opportunities to hear the ideas of our future leaders at the Candidates Showcase on Friday night. On Saturday we have the District Council Meeting and the International Speech Contest. I wish all contestants every success and hope you enjoy the experience. I wish to thank the Annual Conference Chair Rosemary Medcalf and members of her team, particularly the Division Directors and their respective teams and the Program Quality Director Kay Wood for ensuring that we have a successful conference. I wish all of you success and hope you continue to derive much personal satisfaction and a sense of achievement as you continue your Toastmaster journey. Lorinda Logaraj DTM District Director 2020-2021 3
International Director Welcome Members of District 70. The last eighteen months have been a period of tumultuous change and, like it or not, every member has had to embrace that change. Humankind, in our evolution, has needed to embrace change or be left behind. Change is a constant in our lives however the hardest change to make is changing our mind! Change requires one to embrace the unknown. The evolution of online meetings and training has excited many of our members who have continued to develop their technical skills, it has challenged many who have struggled but, ultimately, have risen to that opportunity. Others, unfortunately, have chosen to stand still and some, indeed, have stagnated. Our educational program, Pathways, epitomizes one of our greatest changes as an organization. Members have chosen to embrace the change and accept the countless opportunities on offer… despite the perceived obstacles. Others have rejected this as an opportunity and remained on the sidelines or, even, ceased their journey. I ask you this. Do you embark on a road trip thinking that there will be green lights throughout the journey, or do you accept the potential detours, visit the ‘i’ centers and stop for the occasional coffee? That is ‘life’! Many of our developed countries decree that there will be no manufacture of petrol-driven cars after 2030. What are your options then? Do you stop driving? Or do you embrace that change, adapt and adopt? As Toastmasters, do you stop learning or do you embrace the change, adopt and adapt. All change can be an opportunity for you…if you embrace it. Yours in Toastmasters Lesley Storkey DTM International Director 2020-2022 4
Regional 12 Advisor Welcome 2020-2021 the year District 70 members, Club and District leaders faced the ongoing pandemic head on by embracing change. Moving most of what we do in Toastmasters online has been challenging for members and leaders alike. With this came opportunities, like this virtual conference and the incredible line up of International and Australian presenters. The Conference Committee lived up to the theme “Embrace Change”. Throughout this past year, the external factors have been unpredictable. In light of this, the focus of the District leaders has remained on our members, their Toastmaster’s experience and most importantly their safety. District 70 you are fortunate to have a District leadership team that leads from the heart while having the courage to make tough decisions. We will never be the same, District 70 will never be the same and Toastmasters International will never be the same. We have all grown through this experience. We have proven that we can face challenges head on and find a way forward. We do not shy away from change; we EMBRACE CHANGE and make change work for us. Thank you for embracing change, your personal growth and Toastmasters. Kind regards Kaylene Ledgar DTM Region 12 Advisor 2020-2022 5

Saturday Morning – 15 th May 2021 – 11:30am ENTERTAINMENT SEGMENT Gregory North DTM A resident of the Blue Mountains NSW, Gregory North is a writer and performer of bush poetry and yarns. His quirky humour and bent for accents make him unique among bush verse entertainers. He literally ‘lives’ each character, whether it’s the coal seam gas miner, the complaining granny or a rather camp Clancy of The Overflow. Since his first major competition win at the ‘Man From Snowy River Festival’ in 2004, Greg has won a string of performance poetry awards including Australian Bush Poetry Champion in 2008, 2009 and 2010. He has also competed four times at the National Poetry Slam. In late 2006 Greg won his first award for written poetry – a first place in the Gippsland Wattle Bush Poetry Award – followed by several other written competition wins. Known for his rendition of Banjo Paterson’s ‘The Man From Snowy River’ in 15 different accents and a variety of other characters, he’s not your typical bush poet. Greg performs regularly at Matilda Country Tourist Park and the North Gregory Hotel in Winton, Queensland. Toastmaster: Alicia Curtis DTM 12

Sunday Morning – 16th May 2021 – 10:45am EDUCATIONAL SPEAKER Valda Ford DTM Working across Cultures: “Moving to Unity of Heart, Mind and Body” Cultural differences do not have to lead to cultural confusion. Somehow we have moved away from our oneness to concentrating on what we perceive to be unbridgeable conflicts. Perhaps the greatest challenges are that we do not know how to start the conversation, think through a solution or put that solution into action. We can do that and more but we must allow ourselves to do three things: be honest, accept ourselves and others and be intentional about actions to work towards unity. Join in and start the change you want to see. Valda Ford is the CEO of the Centre for Human Diversity, a non-profit agency dedicated to improving communication between and across diverse groups, decreasing disparities and addressing discrimination and racism. Over the past thirty years she has worked in 57 countries with such various clients as CEOs of Fortune 500 companies, tribal chiefs, Afghani teachers and Buddhist monks. She works with foundations, non-profits, educational centres and others to create productive and harmonious workplaces, facilitate better health outcomes and enhance leadership skills. Valda is a successful entrepreneur having opened four enterprises in the US and the Caribbean. Using her skills as a Registered Nurse and Public Health expert she built a thriving high tech home health and supplemental staffing agency in North Carolina employing 200 nurses and techs, developed the first cardiac, stroke and physical rehabilitation centre in the Caribbean, created the Centre for Human Diversity in Omaha, Nebraska and is a much sought after keynote speaker and workshop facilitator. Toastmaster: George Coward Question Master: Sylvia Zubrickas24
Sunday Afternoon – 16th May 2021 – 2:00pm EDUCATIONAL SPEAKER Greg Van Borssum DTM “REMASTERMIND – Master Your Mindset – Remaster Your Life” A failed school kid who turned adversities into opportunities, from Martial Arts to Movies. Over the years Greg has accomplished an incredible level of achievement...the world's youngest professional Natural Bodybuilder, a multiple black belt martial artist, and award winning Hollywood film maker. But the successes aren't what made him. It was forging his pathway to those achievements that taught Greg the value of the true Warriors Code. Battling through failure and loss, it was his resilience and ability to change and adapt as a warrior that gave him the strength to turn setbacks into comebacks that have made him the champion, mentor and speaker he is today.
