“ BIBA Hackathon 2019: Innovation in ” It really opened my eyes to what you can do working with people from other 2018’s very first BIBA Hackathon came as a functions, even in your own business. surprise to many: it remains the only Hackathon organised by a major insurance association or trade body, and audaciously, was a highlight of the most high-profile event in the UK’s insurance calendar — the BIBA Conference in Manchester. There was a lot at stake for everyone involved, and even though organisationally every base was covered, ultimately the success or failure of those intense hours in the Hack Zone would be down to what the eight intrepid teams were able to develop and demo by the time the Hackathon came to an official close. Julie Page, Aon UK CEO and Hackathon Head Judge, put it succinctly: “I’ve seen fully-formed solutions presented here that yesterday were just brainstormed ideas on post-its. I did not think we would see that!” With live links into the main Auditorium with conference host Natasha Kaplinsky, excitement in the Hack Zone was palpable, rising even higher as each team presented their prototype solutions to the judges, including Steve White, BIBA CEO, whose decision it was to create the BIBA Hackathon at Conference in the first place. No pressure! Every “ one of the eight teams developed a prototype solution to the Challenge they were allocated at random — and in later feedback, 89% said that on ” the basis of the BIBA Hackathon experience, they would go back and recommend the approach in their own firms. Myth busted! Technology was important Designed to demystify ‘hacking’ for brokers (and but was in its right place, i.e. helping us others) as a key innovation tool, and focused on to make a solution work, it was not commercial lines — this live and competitive the solution itself. ‘against-the-clock’ experience brought together individuals put into eight teams to tackle real-life broking business challenges in only six hours. They were normal business people, from a variety of functions and firms — insurers, startups and brokers, and included a group of Brokerbility Apprentices. For most, this was their first experience of a Hackathon. What was their mission? Based on in-depth broker research, four specific challenges had been set on “ claims, SME underinsurance, tech and the better understanding of customers, so that each would be worked on by two separate teams. The Hacksters were supported by a select group of roving experts in data science and visualisation, compliance, regulation, ideation, customer insight, app development and more. Inspiring to see how seriously everyone 8 took the Hackathon and seriously surprising (in a good way!) to see the quality of the solutions produced.
hack Action! 19athon TWENTY BIBA Hackathon 2019: The 2018 Winning Ideas Same again? Yes, and no. This year’s Hackathon will certainly aim to recreate the energy, the commitment and the fabulous range of practical solutions generated by teams competing against each other, and the clock. Once again, we’ll be looking for eight teams (around 70 individuals), and we’ll be supporting them with the best array of data, design, solutions experts, and tech. There will be some new stuff, too - the Hackathon will have a new home, moving from the Gallery to a purpose-built Hack Zone in the entrance foyer, and we’ll be offering many more ways for Conference delegates to engage with and Which of the eight prototypes won our judges’ vote? There was both a unanimous winner — Team experience the Hackathon as it happens … more on Spotlight — and a Highly-Commended, ID8. that soon. The Winner — Team Spotlight Customer Insight for Better Cover Team Spotlight’s Challenge was to develop a solution to deliver a better understanding of customers by providing brokers with a data-enriched, single view of a customer or prospect. Their solution was to develop an app to draw in data from all relevant commercial public sources to enable brokers to work with clients to identify a risk profile, sums insured and other factors that should influence the design of an insurance program. One of the stand-out features was a notification function alerting the broker to where the client had changed their sums insured. As a lot of the information was pre-filled from public source data, this solution meant that the client and broker had to complete minimal information, saving time and effort on both parties for either a new business or renewal The biggest change from last year though will be a situation. two-stage judging process directly involving Highly Commended - ID8 “ Conference delegates.
