QUI REM On the FAMILIAREM Social Impact IPSE CURAT * of the Loner The loner is a figure in European cultural history who, according to the Duden dictionary, “is separate, handles his affairs by himself and in his own way and seems to others to have a peculiar behaviour.” This evaluation was not always so unambiguously negative: in the 16th and 17th centuries, the loner (“Eigenbrötler” in German) was a patient in a hospital who looked after himself, was proverbially “the baker of his own bread” (the literal meaning of the German term) and mostly kept a distance from the other patients. In short: He lived self-sufficiently as someone who was better-off, and he expressed that elevated position by keeping his distance and cultivating alternative patterns of behaviour. His social status and financial power were still inseparably linked during that era. This changed at the latest with Romanticism, the heyday of the loner, when a new type of artist developed: the outsider characterized by renunciation and poverty who, all the way down to today, has had to serve as the * someone who looks after himself blueprint for many long-outdated but still influential and his household concepts of how artists are and are supposed to be.
MA PATRIE MON AMOUR MA VIE. THE PATRIOT 2, 2016, Performance for Video, © Jerry Frantz For their exhibition “Museum of Vanities,” which will be presented from 17 May to 20 August at the IKOB – Museum of Contemporary Art, Jerry Frantz as the notorious inventor of scurrilous persons and projects and Sali Muller as a sensitive analyst of habits of vision and perception have created a series of works of art that focus on the image of the loner and his social function. In his creative output, the loner is an obsessive individual who retreats to his cellar either to build bombs or simply to polish them. Is he a terrorist? Does he seek to kill innocent persons in order to attain a political goal? When and where will he attack? Grippingly resonant questions like these make it clear that in recent decades, terrorists and loners have been linked by the media in an unproductive connection that cannot be easily unravelled.
I See You Looking Back at Me, 2016, © Sali Muller It seems to us that the question as to how society should handle the threat of “international terrorism” is less important than candid reflection as to how we handle the oddball, the outsider, the eccentric, the weirdo. How can we transform the paranoia with which we encounter the loner into a benevolent suspicion? Is there any possibility of avoiding being sucked into the whirlpool of tangled argumentation purveyed by the “war on terrorism” and not automatically regarding everything that occurs within concealment as being suspicious, even downright evil? With her dysfunctional mirror works, Sali Muller directs our attention to the possibility of getting to the bottom of our visual culture. She does this by treating with skepticism and irony the contemporary obsession with the transparency of all private processes – one need think only of the folly of self-revelation that runs rampant on Facebook and other Internet platforms. When Jerry Frantz polishes grenades until they sparkle and shine, this is more than a performative act – it mirrors our own obsessions. It shows the loner as a labourer laying his hands on what we have repressed as a society and causes us to pause and think for a brief moment. Looking directly and enduring the frustration that what we see is not what we expected: this is the lesson we can learn from the works of these two artists. In this way, the Museum of Vanities becomes a museum of our own vain conviction that our gaze is in fact unprejudiced. Sali Muller and Jerry Frantz make it all too clear to us that in this regard, we often overestimate ourselves.

Photo: Otto Saxinger care, an exhibition about care, spatial design, and design explores the healthcare challenges of the 21st century from different perspectives and design disciplines. In the nineteenth and early twentieth century, architects and urban designers played an influential role in the fight against dangerous infectious diseases, such as cholera and tuberculosis. They contributed to a 'hygiene wave' through their designs for the construction of water supply and sewage systems, better buildings, and plenty of inner city green spaces. Healthcare innovations and the spatial translation thereof can be historically traced one-on-one. What challenges await us in the 21st century? These could be prosperity diseases, associated psycho- logical social issues such as loneliness, and ethical social issues such as prioritising life quality over life duration. We examine the impact of technological acceleration on new organisational forms, from prevention in health care to privatisation in the pharmaceutical industry. Bureau Europa Timmerfabriek Boschstraat 9 6211 AS Maastricht (The Netherlands) Bureau Europa, platform for architecture and design is a cultural institute, that presents +31 43 3503020 exhibitions, lectures, workshops and other activities in architecture, urbanism and info@bureau-europa.nl design. We aim to advance knowledge production and talent development in design and www.bureau-europa.nl architecture while also engaging with a broad audience on the subject of understanding of their designed environment. We articulate these ambitions through cultural projects at our institute and in public domain. We focus primarily on a contemporary and social open Wednesday → Sunday 11:00 → 17:00 agenda of the Maas-Rhine Euroregion and Europe as a whole.

The theatrical act, experienced as a way of fighting back against any form of oppression, is the departure point for her exhibition at CIAP. Through a CIAP diverse range of mediums, she will present an immersive Lombaardstraat 23 process-oriented installation, the remains of an intense art 3500 Hasselt (Belgium) and therapy session gone wild. +32 11 22 53 21 CIAP is an independent association for contemporary art. CIAP was founded in info@ciap.be 1976 and its operating methods are very comparable to the German model of the www.ciap.be Kunstverein, a model that is not well known in Flanders. CIAP aims to respond to the local art scene in a 2-way direction, on the one hand by presenting form within the local context towards a larger (eu)regional public and on the other hand by boosting open Wednesday → Friday 11:00 → 18:00 the local artists, art-professionals and public by showing innovative international Saturday → Sunday 13:00 → 17:00 artistic developments.

Even modern architecture focusing on the functional form, still transports messages. The building of the former abbey, in which the Kunsthaus is located, shows the power of a few over lots of people. Even today, the old dynamics of representation are still in power. Clemens Botho Goldbach, Frauke Dannert, Christian Odzuck and Adrien Tirtiaux will research and deconstruct these dynamics. 08.10.2016 → COLLECTION WITH LOOSE ENDS 02 - IDENTITIES 24.09.2017 The presentation of the collection picks up one of the collection’s loose ends and is dedicated to deliberate about its identity: “How did »art from NRW« come into being and what has shaped it since? art does not need a common language, it is international in itself. The association of fourteen institutions in the Meuse-Rhine Region is as contemporary as the art they present. Within a radius of 100 km, the border region of Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands offers a wide variety of exhibitions and events, many of which can be visited in one day. The venues each have a highly individual approach and present art in the most appealing way: direct and inspirational, reflective and atmospheric. This brochure wants to increase the awareness of what this region has to offer in terms of visual arts. It is published twice a year and gives an overview of exhibitions and events.
