Bring a ‘Can’ because you can! We used the last Friday of term, to support local charity West Craven Food Bank, who will be providing much appreciated groceries to local families over the festive period. Students and staff were encouraged to bring in a can of food in exchange to wear a Christmas jumper or don something red or festive. Mr Wilson, supported by Ciara Duffy, Evie-Mai Blenkhorn and Alex Waddington delivered the food to the Food Bank on Friday, 17 December; who were delighted to receive such a large donation of food. They wanted to thank students and parents for their generosity towards those struggling in our community. West Craven Food Bank is a charitable organisation formed in 2013 in response to a growing need in the community, providing emergency food in Barnoldswick, Earby and the surrounding area. Mrs Foy said, “I could not be prouder of our amazing students who have united in their efforts to bring a little joy and comfort to others this Christmas by bringing in their donations for our local food bank”.
Pendle Education Trust Christmas Card Competition West Craven finalists! Congratulations to Year 7 students Safa Mehmood and Isobel Naylor who were the West Craven Christmas Card competition winners. The theme this year was ‘togetherness’ and students produced some beautiful and creative designs. Each finalist received a certificate, a selection box and copies of their card to send to friends and family.
We ASPIRE ‘Living the values outside school’ Here at West Craven High School we are incredibly proud of our students’ achievements. In school we use class charts to record behaviours that meet our core ASPIRE values of ambition, supportive, positivity, independence, resilience and equality. As parents and carers you can also award points on class charts to reflect your child’s efforts at home. We are also proud of the efforts our students are making outside of school. As restrictions have eased it has been fantastic to hear so many talk about the activities they are taking part in. We would therefore be delighted to hear about your child’s achievements, whether that be sporting, musical, volunteering, caring for others or any other special news that makes you proud, so that we can promote their achievements in the school community. Please send an email and a photo if possible to aspire@westcraven.co.uk and we shall feature a selection in our e-bulletin which will share this with our school and wider community. We look forward to receiving your success stories. I would just like to take this opportunity to say how proud I am of our daughter Annabelle and of what she is achieving out of school sports wise. It has taken us some time to get her back into running and both her coach, and us as parents are really proud! Annabelle trains at the Seedhill Track every Tuesday and Thursdays. Joanne Sadowsky Max has been going to the Lancashire Army Cadets Force for the last few years. He is now a Lance Corporal and training 3 star. The photo is of Max collecting for the British Legion Poppy Appeal. I couldn't be prouder of my boy! Lisa Lea
We ASPIRE ‘Living the values outside school’ I just want you to know how proud I am of my daughter Ruby Mae Milligan. Ruby is a volunteer of the Burnley Police Cadets and she attends Burnley College every Tuesday night. She also volunteers her time at weekends to partake in activities in the community. Recently she has been involved in a Weapon Sweep at Thompson Park, Burnley and she has also supported Rossendale Hospice with their Sabre Challenge at Rawtenstall Cricket Club, Bacup Road, Rawtenstall. Ruby will be sworn in to the Burnley Police Cadets in an official ceremony later this month. Ruby shows commitment and passion in everything she does with Burnley Police Cadets. Amazing work Ruby! Stephanie Milligan Swimming Success for Fennella! Keen swimmer, Fennella Turner is celebrating success with several swimming achievements. At the recent Yorkshire Winter competition Fennella gained personal bests in every swim including top ten positions. She is also the 14 year old Yorkshire champion in 50 breaststroke. Most recently she swam at The North East Region Championships in Ponds Forge Sheffield. Having qualified for the open age group in two events Fennella was just one of a very small number of 14 years old girls in the North East to make the qualification. In recognition for her continuing swimming success, Fennella has been selected as part of the Swim England National development program for 2021-2022. An amazing achievement! Fennella is currently training seven times a week with a mid-week 5am swim - a total of 13 hours per week. The West Craven Readathon 2021 Week commencing 8 November we launched our Readathon for Year 7 and 8 students. This is for charity, supporting disadvantaged children in hospitals. The money you raise helps to buy brand new books and storyteller visits for children in hospital. Books and stories cheer kids up, relieve the boredom and help children in hospital to feel a bit better. All Year 7 and 8 students received a sponsor card, they can decide on their own level of challenge, for example, they can be sponsored per book, per chapter, or per 20 minutes of reading per day. From magazines to newspaper articles, comics to classics! As long as they are reading. There will be in-school prizes for star readers and certificates for all participants in the new year. The total raised by West Craven students currently stands at £317.56. Thank you!

West Craven runners obliterate the field On Wednesday 24th November representatives from all years competed in the Pendle inter schools' cross country event. The event was held at Alkincoates Park in Colne, with typical cross country weather; cold, dark and drizzly. This however did not deter our students! Out of six competitive events students from West Craven won three of them with Bella McCredie (Year 7 Girls), Elliot Pickles (Year 7 Boys) and Scarlet Leary (Year 8 & 9 Girls) winning their respective events with time to spare. These were the standout individual performances, but all students competed to a high standard which resulted in fourteen of our students being selected to represent Pendle at the upcoming Lancashire Schools’ Championship. Premier League Initiative On Thursday, 9 December, Mr Wilson took a group of boys to Burnley Football Club to take part in a Premier League Initiative aimed at tackling social challenges. The challenge this year is to look at the football club's performance on environmental issues. The boys from Year 9 – Liam Bowland, Brett Harper and Kamran Sajid, and from Year 11 – Oliver Coady, Oliver Coupe and Kian Pickering will work in groups to develop an environmental strategy that they can then pitch to the club. The best ideas will go through to the next stage of the competition. Good luck!

Dear parent/carer, Raising achievement by involving parents and carers in the work of our school Leading Parent Partnership Award Update 1 West Craven High School is working towards the Leading Parent Partnership Award. We look forward to this new venture that will take us approximately 15 months to achieve. We launched this process at the beginning of September by firstly setting up a working group to represent parents, governors, staff, students and external stakeholders of the school. Additionally, and most importantly, we asked parents for their views. We did this through an online survey sent out during October half term. I would like to extend thanks to the 72 parents who completed this set of questions. The responses and detailed answers will be useful in forming our initial audit. As the co-ordinator I have also completed a self-evaluation of our relationship with parents, looking at things we do well already and those we could improve. On 9th December, Maureen Nash (our LPPA advisor) spent the day with me to look at our self-evaluation documents and the responses from our parental survey. The outcome of the day was to agree a draft action plan guiding us through our priorities over the next 15 to 18 months. The action plan will be finalised in the next week or so and then work towards the award, and more importantly work towards improving relationships and communication with parents, will begin. We look forward to this process as a school and the improvements and possibilities it will create. If you have any questions about the LPPA or the process itself, please don’t hesitate to contact me. Catherine Markham LPPA Co-ordinator
